Bare Feats has posted various test results comparing “CPU Crunching” for a Dual G5/2.5GHz Power Mac vs. Dual G5/2.0GHz Power Mac vs. Dual Xeon 3.4GHz vs. Pentium 4 3GHz vs. 64 bit Athlon 2.2GHz = 3GB of 333MHz DDR which shows that the top G5 Power Mac (dual 2.5GHz) won every CPU intensive test except one.

One of the biggest areas of improvement of Macs is GAMES, including availability of titles and performance. The last 3 people told me that Mac’s weaknesses in games is the primary reason is the #1 reason they will not consider a Mac. The benchmark tests on 3D graphics for the Mac are embarassing at best. The primitive one-button mouse Apple obstinately holds on to just adds salt to the wound for gaming

I am dissapointed to see that we’re always falling behind in gaming, but the major factor (keyword: FACTOR) that contributes to our lack of impressive gaming graphics is neglegence of developers.
I agree that the only *real* problem the Mac platform has now is the lack of games. I think with the Mini’s success, more games will come to the Mac. But also, I think Apple should offer a two button mouse as an option. THat would help…
Well, gaming is where apple is behind (and any serious CAD package too) but it’s the area where they can do the least to get even or ahead. Anything short of buying out ATI isn’t going to get them great graphics cards faster, and they won’t make their own games either….so what can apple do???

It’s not Apple’s fault that the games’ performance suck.
They were testing these games on 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5’s with GeForce 6800 Ultra’s or ATi Radeon X800 graphics cards. So it’s apparent they weren’t using cheap and/or low-end hardware.
The problem is with the game developers. They aren’t optimizing their games for Velocity Engine (aka AltiVec/VMX) or dual processors. Take a look at the Quake 3 test. Both G5’s beat all of the other systems – the exact same systems that beat the G5 in UT2004 and Halo. Why?

PowerMacs are high-end, professional workstations best suited for doing something worthwhile and creative in order to get some serious work done, and the CPU (read: relevant) tests reflect that.

The Barefeats article reveals that Mac’s are definitely up there with the fastest PC’s. They can even be faster, but only when software is written to take advantage of the PowerPCs abilities, all other things being equal.
Game software is clearly an area where further improvement can be made. Who’s responsible for this? Apple? The game authors? Us? (the game customers) I’d say we each have some responsibility, but to be honest, I believe the software authors have the most responsibility.
How this gets fixed is difficult to work out. The game authors won’t optimise games for Macs if they don’t feel the need – they’ll argue that if performance is what you want, get a PC. They might say, hell, it runs on a Mac, what more do you want? Performance? Hey, we’re not a charity.
Steve Jobs has already made some effort in getting gaming to the Mac… indeed it was a convo with Id’s John Carmack which led to OpenGL being ported to Mac OS in the first place.
And clearly, there are customers are willing to buy the games when they are available. I trust we don’t steal them? I know I don’t.
Thus, I see the Mac’s biggest issue in gaming (and other areas now too) as being the software authors* themselves. They are the one’s who have to want to make the Mac a serious platform when developing software, instead of just an afterthought.
* I’m wondering if Id software can be let off, since they actually do tend to make the effort sometimes.
The main issue isnt the hardware. The CPU tests prove the foundations are in place on the G5.
Its been obvious for years some developers choose not to, or dont have the same resources they can put into optimising their code for the Mac. This is where the whole ‘market share’ argument comes into play. This is where Mac users become second class citizens.
Thankfully there are guys like Graeme Devine at ID that went out of their way to bring Quake Arena up to par with the PC.
Kids play games. Adults work on their Macs. Just run a study to prove which machine is more productive over time in a real work environment. Then see who’s smiling and making money. P.S. Include support people.
I like playing games on line because I’m such a loser in real life that I need an escape or I would probably commit suicide. Rather than actually putting any effort into improving my life, I can just escape into the gaming world with my friends Zandar, MadHatcher, and Blaucher283.

At NASA and labs work is done on Linux and now on G5s. Have yet to see anything more serious than a FPS game on a Wintel PC.

the PeeCees work great.
We have no problems with either. Both are effective platforms for us. We have the Macs and PCs running fulltime and have no problems with either. We waste no more time on the PeeCess as with the Macs.

Our computers bring us money, I bought them for our company. If they did not work I would dump them.
Many of my clients have in the past attempted to justify their problems by seeking camaraderie in on-line communities. Clearly the same is happening here. The anti-social game addicts and remorseful PC owners are stalking a Macintosh news site in search of some sort of validation.
This really is an agonizing ordeal for a professional to observe. You gamers and PC drones need help to get through your issues.
(PS – My office uses only Macs. That way we don’t have to waste our time or our money on technical support, anti-virus, anti-spy, anti-malware software and constant upgrades to the laughable Windows OS.)
I work for a major CAD software company. We will port anything to any OS/Hardware (Mac OS X/G5) if a company (Apple) will front the money for the port so we don’t waste our time…which is on the order of anywhere from $250,000 to $500,000. I still am not sure why Apple doesn’t do this because I seriously doubt that we are the only CAD company that has such a program in place for new ports.

I find it odd that no one has raised the point that the choice of x86 machines for the test stacks the odds in Apple’s favour.
To claim that a P4 3GHz or Athlon 64 3500+ are the ‘fastest PCs’ is clearly false. Both Intel and AMD make considerably faster processors than the ones used in the test. Additionally, there was no AMD multiprocessor configuration which would have levelled the playing field.
Finally, the memory set up on the Athlon 64 would not have allowed it to run at it’s true potential. Why was DDR333 memory used? And why put 3GB in the machine? Since this would prevent the memory from running in dual channel mode (assuming the chip was socket 939 which I believe all 3500+’s are)

It’s time for Apple to go shopping. They have enough cash and enough market cap to buy Electronic Arts and it would make sense for a number of reasons.
1- It would make the stock LESS dependent upon Macintosh hardware and software sales. One of the things that Wall St likes about the success of the iPod and iTunes is that it makes Apple’s profit base less volitile. Owning a gaming company would add to that.
2- It would assure a steady flow of top-grade games to the Macintosh platform, which could drive sales of Macs in the home market.
3- It would buy Apple a stable of top-flight programmers, that can also be used for other projects.
4- It would get and hold the attention of ATI and NVidia. That’s Mr. Jobs, Sir- to you.
5- It would also be a great big poke in the eye to Sony and Micro$oftopoly.
The reason that most games run faster on Windows is that most developers prefer to use Direct 3D, a Microsoft propriety application programming interface or API, to communicate with the graphics card. Direct 3D, strange as it may seem, is optimized to work best with Microsofts Operating Systems.
Games written using the industry standard, OpenGL, performs just as well or better on a Mac.
With Windows at 98% of the market most developers haven’t seen a need to switch; the money isn’t there.
Now if Apple adopts IBM’s Power Cell processor, rumored to run 10 times faster than anything presently being sold, the tables could turn and turn fast. How many Windows users would switch to a Mac if the Mac ran 5 or 10 times faster than anything they could run Windows on?
Apple should take matters into their own hands like they did with iLife. They only have to produce ONE game that is the ultimate and starts out only running on the Mac to have tons of gamers have to get a Mac to play THE game. We all know Apple could do it and god knows they have enough cash to fund it. And as the Quake 3 tests showed if optimized properly the G5 is a superior processor for gaming.
They could port the game to windows after a year or so and have it run “acceptably” to rake in more cash to fund further development. Of course by that time the new version will be out – again Mac only for the time being.
Once you get a significant number of gamers on the Mac, the other game developers will start paying more attention to optimizing for the Mac in their development and ports.
Come on Apple! You took away the price argument with the Mac mini, now tackle the final hurdle – gaming.

What IS an Apple G5 anyway? Its just a marketing tag that Apple pays IBM to put on IBM’s 970 processor. Apple G5s are IBM computers just running Apple’s OS … Apple assumes too much credit for ‘their’ computer. Apple can’t even think past the one button mouse, isnt that pathetic and out of touch …though, if they didn’t have some sense I’m sure they’d still be using their now extinct, NuBus. Apple fanboys never like to acknowledge Intel technology inside their Macs, like PCI, or even the goddam microprocessor itself, which Intel invented.

I sometimes play Return to Castle Wolfenstein on my PowerBook. It’s fun and a useful break from real work every now and again. I am not sure I’m missing a liquid-cooled Pentium Whatever. I used to love playing Defender on an Atari 400 when I was a kid, so it’s all about gameplay rather than processor speed.
Games bring in more money yearly than movie ticket sales or music sales.
Why would Apple want to ignore this lucrative market and say to its customers, “Sorry, you can´t play the latest, newest games”

Apple needs to work more with the game industry. Apple has so much cash, why not partner with them to bring out Mac versions of the games when the PC version is released?
What I find curious about the anti-game commentors here is that they are all Mac users.

The average computer user never needs to “encode a FCP video into DVD” or needs the $600 Photoshop program. And what 10 apps do you or anyone has open at one time on a computer? And why would they all need to be open?

3. Play or download music.
4. Work with photos/video.
5. Write a letter or do school homework.
6. Surf the web.
7. Burn a CD or DVD.

As you will notice Apple´s iLife applications and other software is based on the average computer user. Apple is trying to sell more products to the average computer user. The Macmini is the latest attempt.
Where Apple is weak is the game use of the computer.
Until it can get the game use to par with the PC world (however it is done – working with the game developers or technology improvements in their computers), Apple will have problems bringing over PC users to the Mac world.

Who cares. I bought a top-specc’ed iMac for the kids — plenty of computing for most tasks but a bit tardy for some games. Would you rather I buy them a PC instead, or have them think I’m UrAnus for denying them a game machine? Well, they’re happy and entitled to play games after their homework is done, just as Apple is happy to have sold an iMac. In fact, the iMac gets more use as a gaming device than the PS2 and Sega combined! If the top games [we can ignore the few that won’t get ported over] didn’t run on the iMac, then I’d have bought a PC.

Potential good news indeed, but I don’t count on the competition standing still; it rarely happens.
General Consensus: The tide of switchers is running our way. With Windoze having the issues it’s having, you could almost ask: “Why’s it taking so long — and what part does games play in PC-users loyalty to their OS?
To summarize: the G5s did well in the CPU tests but got smoked in some 3D tests where developers didn’t optimize their code for the G5.
It simply means that Apple needs to help some of these less-than-diligent developers do so, perhaps with some software to ease the transition.
Maybe it’s not such a big deal. Anyway, I have no issues with the gaming capability of my dual-2.5. I do have some with the iMac 1.8, adn while it’s not a dealbreaker for me, it could be for a potential switcher.

I don’t know what the problem with gamers is. I could understand criticizing people who spend every waking hour playing games and nothing else, but I doubt most gamers are like that.
Some people play games to unwind after a hard day at work – maybe fragging away on the computer imagining that the opponent is their boss

Last weekend our teenage sons had 5 other friends over for a game LAN party. The 16-year olds all brought their computers over, hooked them up into an LAN, plus hooked up to the internet via DSL.
It was kind of a slumber computer game party.
They all had lots of fun. All we heard was lots of laughter and fun coming from the basement. No fights, no arguments, no alcohol, no smoking, no drugs.
The next day as the parents came to pick them up one remarked, “I´d rather have a group of seven 16-year olds in someone´s house under adult supervision playing games on a Saturday night then out on the streets or some party getting into trouble.”.
And another added, “You show me teenager walking the streets at night getting into mischief and that is a boy that has no computer, computer games or a broadband connection.”
I have an iMac, they all use PeeCees.

Believe it or not, the choice isn’t just between gaming in the basement and smoking dope/causing trouble. There are plenty of other productive activities that DON’T promote isolation and physical lethargy.
By the way, what game were they playing? World of WarCraft? Grand Theft Auto? …or one of the other ultra-violent reality-distortion games that will surely properly prepare them for life after FPS alternate-reality?

As the parent of a teenager (and a pre-teen), I can appreciate the challenge of keeping our kids out of trouble, but I took a slightly different approach than the “Parent of two gamers” did above.
When my son was a Freshman I bought him a TiBook, which he still uses to this day. Now, mid-way through his Senior year, he has a 3.92 GPA, scored 1520 on the SAT, is starting point guard on the varsity basketball team, and was named to last year’s All-State track team in the Mile. He’ll be attending Columbia in the Fall.
We all have an approach that works best for us. In the case of my son and I, the best approach was my close involvement in his academics and promotion of a variety of extra-curricular activities including sports, student government, and sci/tech pursuits. He’s never really shown an interest in gaming.
Gaming casually can be fun, but a computer is meant to be much more than a gaming machine. I think its obscene to pay more than 500$ on any machine for gaming. Buy an XBox. Besides aside from casual gaming, it is for kids…or people who still think they are. Grow up.
A bunch of people seemed eager to yell at Steve Jobs, “It’s his job to get us [Mac users] every one of the latest games, ported, and polished to run at least as fast as the PC version…. because the mac is better.”
Well the Mac is better (:-D) but the reality is that before Steve Job’s gaming initiative we had nothing. All people wanted was CS, which we never got of course, and thanks to HL2 being written in DX9 it looks like we won’t see that for a long long time. Note that I said “DX9” not “OGL2”. This is the beginning of the problems. When a game is written for Direct libraries they are using HEAVILY optimized Microsoft software. Duhh, DX9 is their stupid bread and butter now, no one cares that the mac also gets its ass kicked in those 500-page MS Word search tests. 7 seconds vs 23 seconds. It might happen once in a lifetime, I will give up my 16 seconds if I can have Expose which has saved me probably hours combined to date. Anyway, DX9 code has to be rewritten, and it’s the rewrote code that always gets done half-assed in a port, because the mac developers have less time to do that stuff. They have less time for everything really. Apple provides them with optimization tools (like Shark, read about it on the Apple Developer site, it’s potential is amazing). Then consider how only a few developers really care about speed in the end (namely iD and OMNI, and sadly iD doesn’t seem to be doing their own Mac port for Doom3). When the Omni group ported Giants they painstakingly recoded the DX7 stuff into OpenGL, added Altivec, added SMP support. Game ran like 3x faster than the PC counterpart.
So if you can’t go to sleep at night unless you know your mac can outpace PCs in games, rest assured that yes, it sure as hell can. PC users can also rest assured knowing that no, it doesn’t.
However the people out there who are worried about the money thing, you really need to reconsider the whole situation. Hardcore gamers steal just about every game, they order parts off forums and wholesale sites. No one is making money off these people. Seriously. It is by far the casual gamer who is generating the money for the industry. And as some people pointed out, its a big industry. I didn’t look at figures, but I’d guess based on the lower piracy for console games, that that’s where most of the income is as well. Apple essentially has the casual gamer covered. They have a good selection of games, almost every killer game is there (for me that’s Doom 3 and UT2004). If I could have one magic wish it’d be for a console emulator, in fact I think the best era for mac gaming was when we and we alone had COnnectix Virtual Game Station. The XBOX2 is based on the POWER. I really hope someone clever can do something with that. There is no XBox emulator for Windows PCs i know of, despite it being a 733Mhz P3 with all off the shelf components in it. That’s too bad. Maybe someone can do better.
there is nothing wrong with people who like to casually play computer games. i have friends that do and also have girl friends and perfectly normal lives. even bill gates said in his interview with peter jennings last week that gaming was a better, more interactive way of spending a person’s time compared to tv for example. i’ve met many people online playing computer games, who i talk to frequently and i hate single play games, because they lack that human interaction.
as far as gaming lacking on the mac, i have a highend g5 pm and it runs every game fine. i don’t need to be running the fastest gaming machine on the planet to sleep at night and the stability and convenience of the mac os x makes it worth it.

i agree. nearly every aspect of my life is tied to the computer. i pay my bills on it, pay my taxes, play games, watch and record television, play and manage my music collection (all legal), surf the web, buy items, talk to friends and family, meet new people… it’s truly an amazing device.
It is quite clear the Mac system is on par with anything on the PC side when it comes to graphics, WITH optimized software. There in lies the Macs problem, not the hardware, but available game software. As has been pointed out endlessly, with so small a market share it does not make finicial sense for game companies to send the time and money to port over to the Mac an optimzed game. This probelm will not change without a serious change from Apple in how it deals with game companies.
As a Mac user I freely admit PCs rule in the game world, and even advise people if their main interest is games, they should buy a PC. This is a no brainer to me, and my friends, most of who are PC users.
The one program I will offer up as further testment to the power of a Mac as a graphics platform is Motion. As a video editor I can tell you this program has blown people away with what it can do in real time, in terms of manipulating video. The very scary thing about Motion is it is a version 1.0 program.

My son play games all the time. ALL THE TIME. Warcraft, Medal of Honor, Counterstrike,Battlefield, Need for Speed, you name it he plays it. And he is good. Won $50,000 in last years Counterstrike contest in San Francisco (he rode his bicycle there and back). If he is not playing his computer at home, he´s got a portable Nintendo game running or he´s playing games on his phone.
Why hold your son back? Let him play games, too.

Only a Dult Mac user would pit a dual 64 bit CPU System to a Single 32 bit CPU.
These test are completely flawed, just as the origanal G5 analysis proved.
Face it you put together a system, using dual FX’s(much more of a resonable test) these G5’s would be put to Shame.
Also, Photoshop’s optimization in OS X has matured. The amount of effort they put into optimizing windows versions is almost nill. Especially in the multiprocessing area.

When the sad little gamers like the “not…” commenter and others try to refute the normal posts (like that of the parent of a non-gamer), they just make themselves look even worse. What a sad, sad sort.

The childish off-topic discussion about gaming has really detracted from a few good posts about the topic. This seems to give credence to the oft-cited observation that the bulk of the individuals in “the gaming world” are pimply faced, teen-aged boys who may be a bit insecure and antisocial. That said, I don’t think its really proper to pick on them so ferociously since they are probably victims of inadequate parenting and have a poor support structure in their lives.
I’m not exactly sure what these folks are doing wrong, but with minimal binary fiddling on my 2×2.5 with a 6800 and 4 gigs of ram, I can easily get over 100 Frames in Halo, and that’s with everything tunred on, i.e. 9x AA, and 8x Anistrophic
John Carmack loves the macintosh. The first public unveiling of Doom III being on a mac showed this. I’ll wager, such that carmack himself is doing extensive procesor optimization for doom III on mac, that when DOOM III mac does come out, these Mac bashing folks will eat their words. Oh, and another thing. I have games well over 400 applications installed on my machine. All seem to work fine with no slow down. Anyone wanna try that on a windows machine.
You know what would be awesome – if they released a Mac Gaming machine. A machine totally ready to rock the 3D gaming market. That would be so cool.

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. — The popular computer game Unreal Tournament 2003 invited players to become the “ultimate techno-gladiator of the future,” blasting foes with “a smorgasbord of ferocious, flesh-chewing weaponry.”
Now, researchers are turning the game into a tool for U.S. troops in Iraq — not to make them fiercer in combat, but to sharpen language and cultural skills that could help them avoid a potentially deadly confrontation.
Epic Games, the North Carolina software company that created Unreal Tournament, also distributes modification tools that lets users change the game’s world into anything from a futuristic space arena to a realm of blimp-borne buccaneers.

Whatever. Poderific is right, but of course the gaming fan boys are going to jump all over anyone who offers a balanced critique. Too bad. They should open their eyes to the world around them for a change instead of being so enthralled in “the gaming world.”

wow, i didn’t realize how long this thread was, because normally this topic wears out by, you know, 40-50 page downs. But anyways, as one who has switched, I feel we should just let windows users come if they want. I was a former mac hater, and i wouldn’t even listen. then, i had some life changing tech problems, and i switched. We should simply live by example, using our superior omputers (except of course, for gaming, because of steve jobe, macsoft, the developers,etc). Macs are yes, more simple. But they WORK. you can’t make one, but you can’t break one either.
Typical Mac board, holding on to whatever they can to prove that their machines are “the best”! I love Macs, they’re great machines, but PC’s are faster (as this test shows – if anyone actually reads it). But does that mean PCs are therefore better than Macs? Nope. So why do all you guys act like when the Mac won (in the early tests against older PC hardware) it meant that Macs were better?

Macs deserve more popularity, but there’s not much difference between Macs and PCs now. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.
the mac was best for games when i bought my first one. i didnt buy it for that. i bought it to make use of my time and make money. life is short. quit playin games so much. do something productive before you die.

People get upset because that claim is straight out false. Look at barefeat’s CPU charts now that he decided to put in the fastest (finally for once) AMD/Intel PC’s into the mix, the G5 is at the bottom of the barrel, where it deserves to be with all their delusional, fanatical fans.
G5 better than PC for real work? PC only for games? Get real. Tell that to the guys at digitalvideoediting.com in which the G5 falls flat on its face against its PC counterparts.
Macs–the myth that just won’t die.
i would go out of business if i had to use a pc. no time for downtime or games. i actually use my mac to make money not waste time. my videographer friend uses pc for his work and swears by them. then he swears at them every week when they crash or get a critical virus. he is fed up. he would rather work slow and stabile. he has reformatted and reinstalled twice in a month. he hates is pc and agrees macs are better but still will not switch…DUH. go figure.
Here’s another myth mac zealots like to bring up “my (or friend’s) PC always freezes up, crashes, reboots, and i get viruses all the time).”
It’s a common argument brought up by the Apple cult. There’s an old saying that still holds true today: “You get what you pay for”. Now, if you wanna buy cheap products, you’re gonna get something cheap.
I run a video server 24/7 at work, with no reboots for months at a time. Never had a crash, random reboot, or freeze. Encoding/processing/burning is a breeze. I dont get viruses, because I have a properly setup configuration to deter and delete viruses, should they come through. This is true for many, many other PC users out there who laugh at these Mac zealot arguments.

What did he do online to “lose everything” twice? I sense coyness. I can just as easily pull up OSX crash and unreliability issues from xlr8yourmac.com , using your logic, to prove the Mac platform just as unreliable.
And why would I switch? The vast majority of computer innovation happens right here on the PC. Besides, I have no reason to buy a $3000 dual CPU machine when a home built Athlon 64 is superior for my productivity in every possible way.

sammy dude, i do no need enlightenment. i am not a zealot. granted my studio partner is not very technical. i called and asked him what happened when he lost stuff. turns out he had NO virus software running. i guess he asked for it. i told him even i run virus software. i do not care if you pc zealots have a mac or not. like i said i prefer you stay in your camp and not bring your bugs to mine. i used a pc for 3 years and hated every minute. i know what works in the publishing/art/photography industry. mac.
