Apple says goodbye to ‘Rendezvous,’ hello to ‘Bonjour’

“Apple Computer in the coming months will change the name of its Rendezvous networking technology to ‘Bonjour,’ according to company documents shown to AppleInsider. Last year, Tibco Software of Palo Alto, Calif., entered into a trademark dispute with Apple over its use of the Rendezvous name, alleging that the Apple technology, used in products such as Mac OS X and the iTunes Music Store, infringed on its exclusive rights to the Rendezvous name,” Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.

“In July 2004, AppleInsider reported that the two companies agreed to end the dispute through a mutual out of court settlement. Sources close to the negotiations said that, as part of the deal, Apple agreed to phase out its use of the ‘Rendezvous’ name in time,” Jade reports. “Apple’s Rendezvous technology, also known in the industry as Zero Configuration networking, enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. It uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically find each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers.”

MacDailyNews Take: If Apple couldn’t use “Rendezvous,” we liked “OpenTalk” better than we like “Bonjour.”

  1. Hey MDN : quit serving the popup ads wilya. I have got my popup blocker activated but MDN is still getting through – cut it out, there are enough ads on the page thank you very much! I get a popup everytime I visit lately. Safari.

  2. Rendezvous? I think it should have been named anything NOT French. What’s with Apple’s obsession over faggy French bullshit. Let the froggies have their dying language and give us a real American name for it.

  3. MDN: Being that it comes from AppleInsider and “…according to company documents shown to AppleInsider…”, this should be clearly labeled “RUMOR”!!! Apple could have a hundred different reasons to change their mind or release inaccurate info to the likes of rumor-jockies such as AppleInsider.

  4. Actually, I recently had this issue. In some documentation, I was referring to Rendezvous support and was trying to use the proper terminology. When I asked about OpenTalk, I was told that Apple was never considering that name–it was purely a creation of the rumor mill.

Actually, the suggestion the guy at Apple gave was “Apple’s Zero Configuration networking technology.” (ie, “Prove It! supports Apple’s Zero Configuration networking technology so that all the colors on the displays on your network can match!”) It’s accurate, though a bit wordy… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cheese” style=”border:0;” />

The problem with ‘OpenTalk’ is that it brings back memories of ‘AppleTalk’ and IT managers hated AppleTalk.

But ‘Bonjour’? I think it’s a slow news day for the rumor sites, so they’re just throwing this one out.

  5. Eh, I don’t care for “bonjour,” I think they could have done better. I picture a package that lists as a feature: *Get connected in no time! Networking has never been easier than with Apple’s Yo! Wassup, Dog? no-hassle connection software!

  6. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> What is the politically correct way of calling Apple’s Bonjour..Freedom Talk?

    Smile, it’s Friday!
