OWC and NewerTech announce high-capacity battery for 15-inch ‘Aluminum’ PowerBooks

Newer Technology, Inc. and Other World Computing (OWC) today announced availability of the NuPower AL15 high-capacity replacement battery for the 15-inch Aluminum G4 PowerBook. The 53.3 watt-hour NuPower AL15 battery is available immediately for $129.99, and offers the longest run-time of any battery currently on the market for Aluminum G4 PowerBook models 1.0-Gigahertz (GHz), 1.25GHz, 1.33GHz and 1.5GHz.

“We have had such significant demand for a 15-inch Aluminum G4 model PowerBook battery that when we first made the AL15 available, all we could do was list it on our Web site without a formal news release and try to keep it in stock,” said Larry O’Connor, president of OWC. “It’s only now, three months after we first began shipping, that our supply is ramped up to the point where we can let the ‘rest of world’ know about this great product.”

The NuPower AL15 batteries are built in the United States using premium Li-Ion cells manufactured in Japan and/or Canada. By using only the best components and building them in the U.S., NewerTech is able to ensure that its batteries run longer at full charge and last longer compared to other batteries built to lesser standards. The high-quality cells also allow for more charge cycles than other batteries, and stringent quality control measures make sure that the batteries will not be recalled as others have been.

“We believe these and all of our laptop batteries are honestly the very best batteries you can buy,” O’Connor said. “We build them not only to run longer, but also with lasting reliability in mind. This makes good economic sense, and it certainly benefits the environment with less waste as well.”

The NuPower AL15 batteries, as well as NewerTech’s full line of the highest capacity PowerBook batteries available, can be purchased through OWC and other fine retailers. For more information or to order, please visit http://www.newertech.com/batteries or email sales@macsales.com . Also available are the longest lasting and highest capacity NuPower iPod batteries (with some models reported to provide more than 21 hours of continuous playback), which can be found online at http://www.macsales.com/ipodbatteries

  1. Actually, John, I NEED these batteries and this information. MDN has made it clear that OWC is a sponsor – see the large banner ad at the top of this page. Duh.

    MDN, ignore, John – he’s a moron and doesn’t understand a press release’s purpose.

If you’re not interested in it John, why not shut up and ignore this particular article?

  2. As far as I can see this is much ado about not much. The OWC web site says the batteries give you “up to 6% more capacity” for $109, and “up to 11% more capacity” for $129.

IF the battery gets 4 hours now, you’ll probably gain an extra 30-minutes. Big whoop!

  3. Hey Pete (or should I say MDN), you are on the slippery slope to infomercial blandness. Just because OWC is now sponsoring you it doesnt mean we need to read about their every move – keep a sense of impartiality will ya. OWC are site sponsors – that doesnt mean they own the content! Keep their ads in the ads please.

  4. John,

Have to go with Pete here, if you have no interest in this article, move on. They are not talking about a “special sale” at OWC, they are talking about new battery tech for portables. Maybe doesn’t apply to you, but it’s not just an infomercial. I saw this same article at MacMinute. Why not go over there and bitch there too?

Maybe some people are interested in this information, maybe you’re not, but you don’t speak for everybody.

Also, note there are a lot articles here at MDN, why not complain.. er I mean check out one of them and comment?

  5. I’m not holding my breath here. 53.5 VAh instead of 50 VAh will hardly be noticable.
I have opted for a nice 140 VAh external battery from LIND electronics. It’s a few pounds extra, but it fits nicely in the bag under the Powerbook and gives me additional 8 hours of mobility. And the best: it can be used with any mobile G4, iBook or Powerbook. 2 colleagues and I share into it, actually, using it with iBooks and three flavours of G4 Powerbooks whenever we go on the road.

  6. This OWC info is also being carried on a number of other Mac sites. If MDN did NOT carry it, they would be ignoring a legitimate announcement of the day just to try to appear unbiased – something that MDN never is and no one expects it to be. MDN is a highly opinionated site. If they want to carry an article on ANYTHING, even if they actively promote it, they can do it. It’s easy to just skip the article. I also wanted to see more comparison with the current battery, but I am happy to have the information anyway.
