According to http://apnews.excite.com/article/20041113/D86AMHEO0.html , Microsoft has taken the PDA OS lead, with 48.1% market share for Windows CE, compared to 29.8% for Palm OS. The size of the market is 2.8 million PDAs sold per quarter. Factor in the iPod, though, and the iPod OS is the #1 PDA OS!
Makes me wonder if the iPod OS will be Apple’s wedge into the PDA market; that is, if the iPod OS will be the basis for the eventual Apple PDA (if there is one).
Nice article. Thorough and honest.
They SHOULD evolve the iPod to wedge intself into the PDA market. Another couple million iPods per quarter wouldn’t suck. Hey, maybe Apple could even emulate Palm OS and run Palm apps on an iPod PDA.
As to that article being honest though, I’m skeptical. How can the author be sure she was really a music fan at age zero? I suppose her parents told her that she was. But how could they know? Some babies just smile because they’ have gas. Maybe Jody Farr wasn’t really a music fan but just a smiling gassy baby. She needs to to more fact checking. It was shoddy reporting like that that allowed our mainstream media to parrot totally bogus reports about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Of course, Rumsfeld was pretty sure the weapons were there because he still has the receipts in his office, but still.
huh? You guys are comparing the iPod, a storage drive with music related functions to a multipurpose OS?
Come on….
Obviously lisencing some Aqua OS for handhelds would be cool (something Apple would…probably never do, mind you) but that wouldn’t be the iPod OS…It does music and photos and some extras..
Although mathematically your point stands.. the dominant OS isn’t an OS at all… how extensible is the iPod OS.. it isnt. How customizable? It isn’t. There’s practically no input device on the iPod!
Apple should make a PDA that doubles as a digital hub device. Pair up 2 60gb iPod drives and have a video out to connect to a television. Allow it to play EyeTV programs, quicktime & etc, along with all the formats iPod plays like music and photos. Make the screen a fold-out display that effectively doubles the viewing area when “on the go”.
i think that apple should make a thing the size of an ipod, that has a fold out screen, that folds out again, and again, and agian, untill it is 30 in big, with a 160 gig hard drive, a 3 MHz g5 chip, 3 gig of ram, and in 6 colorfull, colors.
and then give it to me for free, cuz i gave them the idea.
yup
I like username’s idea better.
username: I reckon a inbuilt projector far more likely than a fold out screen. Cheaper, more durable…. Actually flexible screens that roll like a scroll will be more doable.
The iPod Photo is a cute device.
