Today is Apple iPod’s 3rd birthday, as the diminutive money-maker was announced by Apple Computers CEO, Steve Jobs, on October 23, 2001. The rest, as they say, is history. Here is the original press release:

I can remember that. I bought my first iPod in November, just as soon as it became available in Canada. It was a delight. Then I got the 10 Gb when it came out. And then the 20 Gb too, I think it was in the summer of 2002.
I really wish they’re gonna make this flash-based iPod. I love the idea. If they do it they’ll just own the whole market. Bye bye M$…

Is it really iPod’s birthday today, when is the defining moment, announcement, introduction or production? Seems to me today’s anniversary is more like telling your friends of preganancy at about six months – coming soon. Nov 10 should be the ‘official b’day.

How do you calculate a birthday for a piece of technology? Isn’t the gestation period the time between the artist’s first rough sketches and the first hand built product that is identical to the manufactured device?
