“The European research facility, where the World Wide Web was invented, is 50 years old today. CERN (The European Organization for Nuclear Research) is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and is host to the world’s largest lab dedicated to particle physics,” Macworld UK reports. “While its principal function is gather information from a massive underground complex in which atoms are smashed together at high speeds in order to understand the beginning of the universe, its by-product of inventing the Web is far more well known.”
“British-born Sir Tim Berners-Lee created a hypertext program to make it easier to organize, link and browse information on the Internet via a user-friendly means. During a lecture last year at the Royal Society in London, Berners-Lee revealed that he invented the World Wide Web using a NeXT computer. He presented his lecture using Apple’s OS X Web browser Safari on a PowerBook, and referenced the Web’s potential by talking about the possibilities of iCal, Apple’s calendar program,” Macworld UK reports.

It is so funny and yet so predictable.
When the liberal Democrats get their asses whipped by logic and historical documentation it is inevitable that the next phrases coming from the left-wingers are “Can’t we all get along?” and “Must we engage in partisan political discussions here?”.
Typical left-wing attitude and responses, show feigned dismay and self-righteousness after losing the argument and faced with incontrovertable facts.
Three great Democrat myths:
Al Gore is the sole creator of the internet.
Bill Clinton just smokes cigars.
John Kerry was engaged in top secret, clandestine Cambodian operations.
Correction.
Many Democrats don’t feign self-righteousness they are self-righteous.
Sorry.
FYI … Republican Right Winger….
the “internet” started out as a few “nodes” to connect Universities, Research Facilities, and, of course Government Institutions to share information… and it was called “Arpanet”…
I had the privledge to sit in on the “graveyard shift” with a couple of techs, and watch how they monitored the “net”… back in the very early days…
This was at NASA Ames Research Center, Mt View California… and yes…. thats in the heart of whats now known as “Silicon Valley”…
Point being…. it doesnt matter, which politician supported the advent of the internet (nee Arpanet) …. and no one, back then could have predicted what would become of the internet as it is today…
So… you republican right wingers can preach your tunnel vision hate against those who you percieve as the root of all evil…. those “Liberals”.. all you want…
You still wont be right !! …. uhhh or should I say .. “correct”..
Our forefathers were “Radical Liberals”…. think about it..
After a well spoken bi-partisan response, Right WInger said “Well, G-Spank, I suppose that this makes you either a liar or an idiot. So, which one are you?” and his seething anger dripped from his fingers.
Ok, fine – you made your point. That’s cool. I actually appreciate you proving me wrong. But then you screwed it all up by saying this:
Three great Democrat myths:
Al Gore is the sole creator of the internet.
Bill Clinton just smokes cigars.
John Kerry was engaged in top secret, clandestine Cambodian operations.
See now there you go, validating you’re own hatred of “liberals” (such a dirty word) by making up a stereotype that just isn’t true. You want to hate them so much that you’ve done and lost touch with reality. I don’t know any liberals (and I know quite a few) that believe the “Three Great Democratic Myths” The real myth is that republicans believe Democrats think those things!
Wow, this is even better than I could have imagined. Another predictable liberal Democrat response, ranting and raving with little logical connections with the stated argument, and poorly formed thoughts and ideas.
“it doesnt matter, which politician supported the advent of the internet (nee Arpanet)”
What, you mean Al Gore was wrong? Thanks for agreeing with me.
” and no one, back then could have predicted what would become of the internet as it is today”
No sh*t? But this fails to address the intent and purpose of ARPANET.
“you republican right wingers can preach your tunnel vision hate against those who you percieve as the root of all evil”
Thanks, but I really don’t need your permission to write my thoughts and opinions. Still, I would be glad to discuss evil, good, morality, sin, etc. as long as you would form a direct question, and avoid vague and imprecise statements.
The fact that Republican Right Wingers watch Fox News and believe that it is “Fair and Balanced” is enough evidence to commit them right there. They are living in a world of skewed reality/fantasy. But that’s what outright propaganda aims to do, and guess what – it works. I feel sorry for the hordes of sheep that have a daily feeding of anger and hatred while watching Fox News report on opinion.
The phrase Fox news uses, by the way, when it wants to put out uncut, unfiltered propaganda, is “Some people say”. Watch it and you’ll hear them use it all the time. It’s hilarious, sad, and outright dangerous to this country.
G-spank,
Your fair and balanced news is somebody else’s “unfiltered propaganda”. I feel sorry for the hordes of sheep who blindly accepted Dan’ Rather’s story and explanation of the forged memos. Any news organization that spends five years on a story is either incrediblely stupid or biased.
No news organization is neutral. That fact that we have both opinions to watch is wonderful. If you don’t like one of them, don’t watch it. If enough people don’t watch it, it goes away.
I’m sorry I’m confused, is this a Mac/Apple related blog site or a political slanging match site between a TOTAL bunch of idiots from any political persuasion?
Shut the f^@k up about your politicians and your politics (and for that matter your religions too – with maybe the exception of the almost religious “Mac” fever).
Can we discuss the topics at hand – The underlying technology that was used in the development of what we now know as the World Wide Web (actually CERN didn’t ever claim to invent the internet, they were involved in developing the World Wide Web which runs over (part of) the internet) was born on the precursor to Mac OSX (NeXT), which in itself of course has a Unix heritage (which is a no brainer as Unix was used to “build the internet” basically).
“I” think the point is clear – OSX is the result of the ULTIMATE evolution of UNIX (THE INTERNET OS), through NeXT, into an OS that is now perfect for the Internet, as well as for end users that want to perform stand alone tasks, such as typing a letter (not UNIX’s strong point).
Also the fact remains that the OS alternatives from Microsoft could NEVER have been used to develop the www, or the internet. MS OS’s were designed to do the “typing a letter stuff” of PEROSNAL computing. It wasn’t until the internet and in particular the WWW started to gain momentum that Gates and Co jumped on the bandwagon. The result is that most people just added that internet connectivity, hobbled onto the Windows OS they already owned, and jumped on the internet too. Now Windows, an OS that makes Swiss cheese (how appropriate for this article) look solid, has left the internet a place for viruses, worms, spyware, trojans etc etc.
I agree that viruses etc would have happened no matter what the OS, but it has been repeatedly shown that the heritage of the Windows OS’s means they are NOT designed for networking, and so with all the HOLES left open in it (eg ports open by default etc) it is the perfect “culture” for breeding these “internet diseases”.
BTW I am not a “MAC zealot”. I DON’T EVEN OWN A MAC.
I am OVER virus warnings, spyware scanning etc etc, however I just thought (like most people) that this was what owning a PC was about these days. Then a few months back I read an article about the “NEW” Apple OS X. ONLY then did I “realises” that this isn’t what owning a PC should be about, or even is about.
My first Apple product is my iPOD, and when Tiger is launched, I will be purchasing my first, but not last, Apple MAC PC (maybe a Powerbook).
This is what Apple has to do. “Enlighten” us “Windozers” that have bought into the lie that all the above crap is a fact of PC life. It is starting to happen. I have also introduced these FACTS of computing to several of my friends, I wont be the only “switcher”.
This is what I wanted to talk about – thanks for your time.
PS – I reiterate – F%@k the politics etc!
opps sorry –
(part of) = (it is part of)
PEROSNAL = PERSONAL
“realises” = “realise”
From: Deus Ex MAchina
“European research facility where the WWW was born” ??? What the hell? Europe invented the internet? BULLSHIT! LOL
Dear Deus Ex MAchina, the WWW and the Internet (and the Matrix for that matter) are not synonymous. The Internet has been around far longer than the WWW. You apparently have been around (computing) somewhat less long than the WWW.
For a definitive account see John S. Quarterman wrote The Matrix, a comprehensive book on the history, technology, and people of computer networks worldwide, as well as six other books.
http://www.quarterman.com/~jsq/
See also http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=77526
Essentially the WWW is a subset of the Internet which is a subset of the Matrix (not the movie! Or maybe it is?). The Matrix is the totality of present-day computer networks (popularized in this sense by John Quarterman; rare outside academic literature).
More detail:
The Matrix includes the Consumer Internet which includes the Core Internet.
`It’s like those Russian dolls,” said John S. Quarterman, editor of Matrix News and Matrix Maps Quarterly, “where you open up Yeltsin and find Gorbachev, and inside Gorbachev is Brezhnev.”
To find which category fits your site, apply these simple tests:
If you can send mail to an address in the Matrix, such as mids@tic.com, you’re in the Matrix .
If you can connect with FTP to http://ftp.ripe.net, or use Mosaic or Lynx to reach http://www.ripe.net, you are in the Consumer Internet .
If your computer runs an FTP, Telnet, Gopher, WWW, or other interactive server that users outside your own organisation (your company, university, etc.) can use, then you’re in the Core Internet .
Try Googling for more information:

OK? Understand?
Republican Right Winger,
What is it with right-wing ideologues like you? Your wing of the party seems so dead set on demonizing anyone who doesn’t agree with your positions. OK, what do you make of me? I’m a registered Republican who voted for Dubya (to my lasting regret) and I consider myself a liberal, in the original, British usage, not the vilified tax-and-spend American term. I am deeply disturbed by this administration’s attacks on the constitution (the abhorrent Patriot Act) and I’m a fiscal conservative, who is horrified by this administration’s spendthrift policies among other things. I find it really ironic that the Republican boogeyman, Bill Clinton, was far more responsible fiscally than this president. People like you are determined to ram your ideology down the throats of the American people, no matter the cost to our country. In future, stick to talking about Macs on this forum.
it all started with Meat of Moose:
C’mon, people, don’t you all know that Al Gore invented the internet, UNIX, and the iPod.
But who cares, anyway? The fact is that in todays political climate things are very extreme, the stakes are very high, and as a result threads like this get turned political. It’s a sign of the times, if anything.
for f**ks sake people! this is MacDailyNews!
you are all a bunch of political science wanna-beeeeees. take your political opinions and agendas to a Fox news chat room and leave it off of MDN!
David H: “Am I right in thinking Seahawk works at CERN? Or are you not allowed to tell us?”
You are right David. These days have been busy as I was at CHEP’04 in Interlaken: no much time to wander around with you guys here in MDN.
At wednesday Conference Dinner we had a televised connection with the celebration cake at CERN (actually in Crozet, watching the country side lightened up by light beams matching the LHC tunnel underground) and 550 delegates sang “Happy Birthday CERN”
…and my office is not far from the Tim Berners-Lee occupied at the time. There is a nice plaque next to the door commemorating what – at the time – seemed just an in-house product like many others.
We were using it to exchange papers and document on site. Funny to see the wildfire spreading: took by surprised Tim and Robert (the other WWW co-author, unknown to the public at large). Robert is still at CERN. Tim left years ago.
and yes, I am allowed to say that, but opinions expressed here are solely my own and do not represent the official stance of the Lab on any subject covered by my posts.
This said, as a form of respect to the Mac community and visitors in general, my posts represent the best information I could relate and – sometimes – my irate replies are the result of a tough day and the occasional troll or Windozer just give me the chance to vent off.
