Wrong, ray. Older iPods do not get the new features. Those features are reserved only for 4G iPods.
Downloaded this update and installed – it told me my 3G iPod 40GB was up to date with iPod Software 2.2.
This is just a new unified updater that covers all iPods for 1G to 4G.
So… the new software features are not available for the 3G iPods? Is this how Apple is addressing the battery life problem by making each new iPod’s features unavailable to the previous versions…no matter how similar? That way if people feel the need to upgrade their iPod every year they will never see their battery die. I was hoping that since the 3G and 4G are closer in design (dock) than the 3G was to 1/2G that we would get new shuffle and the efficient menus. And yes, I know Apple wants people to buy new models, can’t expect features to be compatible with every version, etc…. blah blah blah.
What 3G iPod “battery problem?” My 3G gives excellent battery life. Of course, I know how to use it to maximize battery life, too. More info about max-ing out your iPod battery here:

maybe I should of said the “rumored” battery problem. My battery is also going strong, but Apple has had a lot of bad press over the perceived problem with iPod battery life.
damn I wanted the audiobook speed up function on my g3 🙁 crap
This same issue occured when the 2.x updater came out for 3rd Gen iPods. Some limited features worked on 1st & 2nd Gen iPods, but the best and majority of features were reserved for the 3rd Gens only.
So it appears the same will apply to these new versions and the interface version. 🙁
D9: but it looks like none of the new features work on previous versions.
I’ve heard no rumors of any 3G iPod battery problem. Those teo schmucks who went around new york defacing Apple’s ads had 1G iPods that were like three years old. They didn’t like the fact that the iPod’s lithium-ion batteries (like all lithium-ion batteries in consumer electronics devices) lose their ability to hold a charge after a few years. Or, more specifically, a few hundred charge cycles. I’ve cycled my powerbook battery about 400 times and I can see it starting to fade; but I’m not waging a rumor campaign against Apple because of it. Blame physics.
So my year-old iPod still gets a good seven hours to a charge. That said though, I’ll be updating to the 4G version sometime soon. They look luscious.
Hmmm, Well, I will wait for the 60 GB and then pass on the 30 GB to my son.
it seems that the 8->12hour battery life increase is mostly software based. It seems odd that it can’t be translated to work on the chips in the g3 and mini. Maybe it depends on something that is found only in the new g4 chip.
I’ve never had any battery problems with my iPod. I would really like to have the new on-the-go playlist features for my current 40G, especially the ability to delete items from an on-the-go playlist.
I just bought an Ipod through Amazon a freaking week ago and this is the first mention I have heard about this. I’m so frustrated.

Just return the fvcker and get the new one.
Pissed Off: I suggest eBay. It’s buzzing with the old iPods now.
Yeah, I was going to go buy my girl one at the store yesterday, but I knew that there were rumors afoot of the new iPod. My girl is lucky, because she is getting a new 40G iPod, twice as big as mine, and with all the new software/battery life/smaller/cheaper, etc etc etc. All with FREE LASER ENGRAVING!!!!
I love you Apple.
I don’t get all the fuss about the shuffle feature. This was already offered on my 3g iPod…
It’s an updated shuffle feature, apparently.
The shuffle feature is on the top menu, rather than in the “extras” menu. Moving it one of those things so obvious I didn’t really know why Apple didn’t do it… and now they have. They’re usually pretty good that way.
Why dont us 3G owners get at least some new features. I want 12 hours. Heres to hoping that we get a software update soon
My question is when are they going to get smart and let you toggle through repeat one/repeat all/no repeat while playing a song without having to back all the freaking way out to the main menu, then go into extras, etc. Pain in the butt. I just don’t understand why they haven’t done this yet…
This is just a new unified updater that covers all iPods for 1G to 4G.
Exactly. Took me a few seconds to grok that by looking at the diagram on the updater page showing which version applies to which iPod. It’s a shame more people can’t figure out things like that for themselves.
I don’t think apple will have any more updates for the 3G ipod.
:'(
i’m going to file a complaint
does the new shuffle feature toggle the song/album shuffle on and off, or does it simply “re-sort” the songs in a particular playlist in a one-time shuffle?
Resorts the songs ^.^
