Is Apple saving 60GB iPod debut for Paris?

“Besides the fact that the drive production is in its initial stages, there are other reasons for Apple to hold back on the 60GB iPod. Both reasons have to do with marketing and publicity,” MacDailyNews’ own SteveJack explains over in our Opinion section today.

  1. I think the 60GB is waitnig in the wings until they have enough to ship in volume.

They may also be testing the water with the lower 40GB model to see if more people bite. It’s possible that the market for a 60GB player is very small. I have around 40 GB in my iTunes library and I have a far bigger CD collection that most people I know – though it’s by no means huge. If most people stick to the 20GB model, maybe there’s no point shipping 60GB until the cost of those drives comes down.

I’m also reasonably happy with my original 5GB model. It would be nice to have the whole library with me, but 1000 songs is pretty good. Even so, the new 20 gigger really is pretty tempting.

  2. waiting in the wings…

As far as I can tell Apple has everything waiting in the wings…

    vaporware both hardware and software

everything they make is due in the future…

    iMac
    iPod
    OS 10.4
    iChat
    3.0 Ghz Chip

and the list goes on and on…

It sure is easy to position yourself as a leader if you don’t have to deliver on time.

At least we can count on Microsoft to produce products that work in the real IT world today.

  3. Oh No!

    Artiom said ass…

The censors will delete your post.

oh, I forgot, this isn’t TMO

  4. Sputnik.

First, praising Microsoft makes you appear retarded, sad but true.

Second, the king of all vaporware is Microsoft, number one is security for Windows, what a joke and of course the biggest piece of crappy vaporware Longhorn.

Third, the only thing Microcrap has going for it in the IT world is that it creates jobs, I’m not saying that’s bad, but a takes a huge team of people to keep Windows servers up and running.

I got down and dirty with a friend’s XP suffering from “issues” and came away feeling smug at the superiority of … OS9!

I’m Waiting in the Wings, Sputz — OS X, Tiger (multiuser iChat), iMac, a dual 2.5…. I don’t mind waiting … I want a 40GB iPod in a Mini. Everything I buy is in the future; everything I’ve bought is in the past.

  6. Keep ’em coming Sputnik! You’re always worth a laugh!

I’m really interested in this “real IT world” that old Sputters keeps referring to – where is it?

Maybe he’s been watching too much Star Trek.

  7. I’m with Hywel. IMHO, Apple is preparing for a blockbuster Christmas. Releasing 60 GB now will constraint the supply for the demand just before Christmas since typically, the high end sells very well.

  8. sputnik – the funniest man on the planet. has microsoft EVER delivered a product on time? and when it is 3 months late (or three years, depending…), how many holes does it have?

Microsoft admits there best product is Office 2004 FOR MAC. hmmm. and, Steve Jobs said the best windows software is iTunes!

I convert people on a monthly basis to leave the darkside – not my job, but i feel compelled. the real IT world? there wouldn’t be an IT tech support industry if it weren’t for Microsoft’s problems. I guess you can keep job security as long as you keep convincing your higher ups to buy problems for you to fix.

talk to anyone with a Mac network, or better yet, a polyplatform network. Macs work better in ANY network, and our Xserve and Xraid kick ass. sure glad we shed all those Dells, and that stupid overpriced Gateway server.

  9. maybe they’ll release a special edition 60 Gb iPod made out of aluminum to match the new G5’s with a color screen for like $600…

doubt it, but that would be cool.

  10. It’s obvious why they’d hold out, besides the issue of production volume of the new drives. It’s going to be top of the line. It’s obviously going to have some new features. Color???

  11. Maybe MDN should stop speculating too much.
What will you write next if the 60G isn’t revealed at Paris?

[Is Apple saving 60GB iPod debut for whenever?]

  12. I’m hoping that they’re holding out because the 60 gig is gonna be a new technology. Maybe they’ll add airport to it, so i can use it with my shiny new airport express, which might I ad, doesn’t ship for another 2 weeks for me 🙁 I WANT IT NOW!

Being that Microsoft must wait to see what Apple has before they can copy it in order to come out with something new for PC’s, you must really be suffering Sputznik.

  14. uhhh so much for that guarantee..

honestly.. what is the demand for the 60GB..

I have around 1200 songs on my comp.. the 60 GB should be synced with iPhoto.. and used to plug into your TV and play quicktime movies!!

Guess I answered my own question
