RUMOR: New Apple 4G iPods coming on Monday

“Apple will announce new models of its standard ‘white’ iPods on Monday, Think Secret has learned… According to sources, the company plans to unveil thinner, sleeker white iPods… [and] the enclosure will be the same general size as that of current iPods, [but] it will be thinner; it will also have a new scroll wheel of different color and design,” Nick dePlume reports for ThinkSecret.

Full article here.

Earlier this week, ThinkSecret reported that the new iPods would debut in August and also that the new 4G iPods would be more compact that today’s “white” iPod models. ThinkSecret also reported that the new iPods would come in a variety of colors, feature larger hard drives, and carry prices similar to the current iPod crop.

Whether the entire iPod body will come in a variety of colors or just the new “iPod mini-inspired” scroll wheels will come in colors isn’t clear.

MacDailyNews Take: This is obviously a rumor and the details are in flux. As always, we’ll have to wait and see what, if anything, new comes out of Cupertino this Monday.

  1. i wonder if these new ipods will sport new, additional features and functionalities to head off the impending competition for microsoft’s new media player (amazon is already taking pre-orders, right)? so it’s not too soon for apple to upgrade ipods…

  2. Sorry, there’s still another typo:

“would be more compact that today’s “white” iPod models.”

    “that” should be “than” ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  3. I agree with the ha but I think the ha ha is well well wide of the mark. As for Microsoft’s new media dinosaur I reckon tee he he is most likely the order of the day.

  4. Nice to know Apple is not standing still — it can’t afford to.

In another development, Microsoft is planning to add a keyboard plus music composing software a la GarageBand to their Windows Media Player. The retractable keyboard will be housed inside a larger form factor. Ballmer also promises a new version to be released alongside “lateborn” will have hybrid power and deliver 5000 tunes per gallon. And by 2008, you’ll be able to live inside the WiMP.

  5. What I would like to see is a version of OSX on the ipod with a dock that is based on a circular shape (not like the straight version in desktop OSX).

Also if they have 60gb hard drives – who own 60 gb of music???

I reckon you will only need 60gb hard drives if the new ipod have video playing functionality as not even the so called ‘ipod killer’ from microsoft which only has 20gb hard drive.

I have a 30gb and still have 10gb of free space on my ipod – and i literally use it for everything (storing apple updates, my font library, audiao books etc etc).

  6. Solarflare: I have 60 GB of music on my Cube without recording about 2/3rd’s of my cd collection.

It isn’t that hard to get that much music if you aren’t a teenager and your taste in music isn’t in your asshole.

  7. Upcoming products such as the MediPlayer are untested. Apple’s success with the Pods has been because they do what they do better then the competition. Bells and whistles have never guaranteed success. The Dell DJ comes with more features then the iPod but it is a dismal failure. Creative has interesting looking products but do you hear them announcing sales figures? The next iPod doesn’t need to compete with them. It simply needs to continue to be the best at what it does. Don’t be disappointed if there is no FM radio, no WiFi, no internal mic or any other thing that would bring the cost up. TS says the cost will come down. Look for 20, 40 and 60 GB (the latter available in September, probably) available immediately. The drives will be imbedded on to the circuit board rather then attached by a ribbon connector. This is how they’ll be able to make it slimmer. Hopefully, it will have a longer battery life – perhaps up to 10 hours. Monday or Tuesday we’ll know.

  8. To have a version of OS X on a colour screen on an ipod would be great – especially to show windows users what they are missing by not using Mac OS X.

It would be a great ‘sweetener’ for windows users to the mac lifestyle and also promote OS X to windows users at the same time!

  9. I personally think the design of the creative products are not anything spectacular!

There is no WOW factors with any of their designs – you don’t seen them winning design awards every year unlike APPLE!

In fact – I don’t think Creative has ever won any design award!!

  10. > The Dell DJ comes with more features [than] the iPod

Why’re you callin’ it Dell? It’s a Dull, isn’t it? Well, isn’t it?

No..? It’s not? Who? Michael Dell? Computers? So it’s Dell then … I’ll be darned. Geeze that’s so embarrassing.

No, no, thanks, my apologies … Dell … yeah, rings a bell. But it’s dull, of course. You agree? Dull Dell, haha. Yuh, well you too azzhole.

  11. I would like to see a color screen so you can show/review pics and a video out port so you can see the pics or watch a video from in on a TV maybe. Also wifi would be very cool.

Why does it need 60 GB? For stealing military and corporate secrets of course! The 40 Gig model has enough room for listening to all your music OR stealing the design plans for a nuclear facility. NOT BOTH! This will be a big step up.

  12. It makes sense to come out with new ipods now, mostly because of HP’s hpods coming out this month. then people can get older, maybe cheaper hpods through HP, and the newest models straight from apple.

  13. what if you could jack in your ipod to any TV and show off your pictures to friends (maybe even movies?)

that way you could take your ipod over to a friends house (say, in Tokyo) and just plug in the A/V jack and instantly a Menu screen comes up where you could, obviously, play music playlists etc, or check photos, watch movies..

all the stuff on your ipod..

i still don’t think the dell DJ has the same storage abilities as the iPod.. nevermind it’s butt-ugly on the outside, and butt-ugly on the inside…

also it doesn’t play AAC files

  14. NEWSWEEK will have a cover story featuring the new iPod. Magazine goes on sale late Sunday 7/18 in airports/train stations – there are still those?. Possibly on website. Ironically, the Newsweek website is part of MSNBC which is part of M$. It’s a small world. (Remember when the flat panel iMac was debuted on Time Magazine cover and the Canadian website didn’t embargo the story and published it a day early on Sunday? Oh you don’t…. oh well.

  15. If they made a TByte iPod it would do me no good. What they have now is still way too much music than I can listen to in a reasonable time. What I would like is an iTunes compatible 512MB flash player that runs on one AA battery. I currently have an iRock flash player and I love it. Apple needs to enter this part of the market. An iTunes compatible flash, does not need a big display, make it small (3/4 the size of the iPod mini) and for about $150. Sell a trillion of them. Then apple has a product for the whole range of users.

  16. Flash player sales are slumping. Apple’s sales for the last quarter were more then all MP3 players combined as they announced at the analyst conference. It’s old technology, sort of the floppy disc of MP3 players. As hard drives become cheaper – and that will happen when production increases within the industry, they will dominate. Apple will never go backwards to flash players. They made it perfectly clear when they introed the mini that they wouldn’t do that. In a years time, the mini will drop in price as Hitachi gets their production up to snuff and Apple recovers the R&D which is built into the early product price. Eventually, prices come down – they always have. Heck, even the iPod price has dropped. AND IT WILL DROP EVEN FURTHER ON MONDAY!! Stay tuned.
