“Bill Gates is reported to have told more than a few people, when asked how long he intends to run Microsoft, ‘Until it stops being fun.’ This remark has always baffled me, since it’s never been clear what fun is for Bill Gates

The problem with making a joke about anything too often it that people start to believe its gospel. A good deal of what Americans enjoy today has been brought about by Republicans (except for what the slackers enjoy, they are enabled by Democrats…..I joke a bit, but did I upset you?).
Yet even the Simpson s (on of my favorite shows) like to get in their regular crack about the right being evil. Sure, its supposed to just be for fun, but add that to Leno, Letterman, SNL, yada yada yada…. The less critical thinkers start to believe its truth.
Its like one of my most favorite cars Ive ever owned. It was easy to maintain, fun to drive. Yet a few major accidents caused it to catch fire. Couple that with a rash of comics that wouldnt let it go, and the Pinto is considered one of the worst cars ever made. It just isnt so. Ive owned two. GM had more fire problems with their pickup trucks for a while, but you never heard about that as a joke.
Are there some Republicans that are evil? Sure..just as there are some Democrats…and independents.. religious people… heck, weve all had the occasional evil thought.
But we dont joke about it unless we want someone to think its true.
Now you wanna joke about something, lets get back to M$.

Hey, even dictionary.com agrees on this one:

Hey all you political extremists. This is a forum about Dvorak shuttering Microsoft. I don’t care what your thoughts are about GWB. Go to a political post. Maybe somebody there will care.
And howcome nobody is calling Dvorak an idiot this time? His predictions about the Mac have been moronic at best. I don’t know how he even gets anybody to listen, because he never sounds like he has even half a brain. Now that he suggests shuttering M$, everyone is yelling Huzzah!
M$ isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Mac isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. GWB may be out of a job by January, but if so, the replacement won’t be leading us the any Utopia.
Expose Dvorak for what he really is…a fraud. Just like Enderle, and just like Thurott.
competion is a wonderful thing. I wish we had more of it in the computer industry. Microsoft and Dell just don’t cut it.
Bill Gates does not have the option to “shutter” the publicly-traded Microsoft.
czobes, did you read the article?
So now this thread has become, yet again, a George Bush hate-fest. And it has followed the typical pattern: One liberal, obsessed with his hatred, needs to make sure the rest of the world is aware of his hatred, because his hatred is so special that it extends to prop up his much-needed sense of self-righteousness, (an essential component of what passes for liberal “thought”). So he inappropriately inserts a “George Bush is evil” non-sequitur. If the original topic had been constipation, he could somehow have managed to blame the unfortunate backup on George Bush as well, because for people like this, everything wrong, stupid, and evil, flows from George Bush (or Republicans, or Christians, or Americans, you know, one of the groups that it is the fashion to loathe these days). So we’re meant to believe that this person, should they so choose, could lecture us on the finer points of geopolitical affairs, yet they clearly demonstrate an ignorance and/or disregard of that which is and is not appropriate, (as in, on topic), here in these forums.
And then, when someone else reasonably asks why these threads so commonly digress into a George Bush hate-fest, a half-dozen or so deep thinkers enlist themselves in a moment of enlightenment to lecture their inferiors – and so we are inundated with various bits of tired and time-worn fallacies. My favorite here today being that Americans are basically humorless. Yes, that’s it! We don’t get your joke, or, we don’t like your joke, therefore, we Americans are ________ (blah blah blah…fill in the blank with your favorite anti-American cliche). Perhaps jealous Europeans as well as self-loathing Americans that think it reasonable to define humor for the rest of us should go, say, to south central Los Angeles, stand on a street corner and yell at the top of their lungs: “You colored folk, you black bastards, are the biggest group of ignorant, stupid, lazy, and smelly creatures to have ever walked the face of this planet”. Then, when you find yourselves surrounded by a group of people that are rightfully offended and justifiably angry, tell them they just have no sense of humor. If that does not disperse the crowd crying for your death, be sure and tell them that you’ve been put in charge of that which is and is not humorous. Surely then, they’ll get the joke, laugh it off, and applaud your hilarious bit of street theater.
Sir Loin
Wow, Sir Loin, Lighten up.
Lots of turbulence around here.
Bush in 2004!!!!
– I am Osama Bin Laden and I approve of this message.
And why must there always be a resident genius that chimes in with the ever-annoying “Lighten Up” command? This is what someone says when they dearly want to take you to task, but have the instinctive realization they’re not up to the challenge.
Regardless, I’ll make a deal with you sir: I won’t presume to regulate your level of emotion on any given issue, and in return, you do the same for me. Does that sound fair enough?
Sir Loin
This was fun, until the political fanatics got IT confused with partisanship.
Anyhow, someone should start a Microsoft Death Knell with this one. But Dvorak should be careful of his whishful thinking he might get his whishes granted and then what ?
We need a slow death for M$ otherwise we’ll be fighting Linux tomorrow (realistically). Microsoft is a much easier target believe me.
Let the corporate market phase out Windows/Intel for OS X/Mac in a progressive migration such as the one it did from DOS to Windows.
“Let the corporate market phase out Windows/Intel for OS X/Mac”
That’ll be the day.
