Apple CEO Steve Jobs hints at new iMac debut on August 31 at Apple Expo in Paris

During Steve Jobs’ WWDC keynote presentation, where he demoed Spotlight, Mac OS X 10.4’s new system-wide metadata search engine technology, Jobs used the Finder’s search box to search for the term “iMac” starting at 45:31 in the QuickTime stream of the WWDC Keynote. Immediately thereafter, Jobs demoed Address Book’s use of “Spotlight” technology and used it to search for “Paris” starting at 46:52 and then used the term “birthday” to create a “Smart Group” in Address Book.

So, that’s it, it’s official: iMac’s birthday will be in Paris! Which, of course, means the Keynote 2004 presentation for Apple Expo 2004 Paris, on Tuesday, August 31 at 10:00 a.m.

Is Steve Jobs slyly dropping iMac debut hints during his WWDC keynote presentation? Watch it via QuickTime here. Or do you think Steve just picked these search terms at random?

  1. Amazing. I did not realise this. iMac Paris Birhtday. Really clever and we know that Steve likes things like this ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” /> Next stop Paris

  2. When he chose “iMac” for his search, I figured that after the Tiger presentation he might unveil the iMac, but no go. Now this Paris thing
really makes sense…gives them a little more time and the iMac doesn’t
hog the Tiger hoopla that we all really need to see and focus on at the conference. Also, this keeps Apple momentum in the media and keeps
    the interest in stock going.

  3. Simply put, if everything is shown in WWDC, what will he have left to talk in Paris keynote? So, some are reserved for that.

But, in my opinion, August 31 is too late for schools to purchase new machines..

  4. Watch it all and you see he searches on (in this order)…

    – iMac
    – Paris
    – Birthday
    – Yosemite
    – Paris
    – Tiger
    – Halfdome

Is “Halfdome” another reference to the iMac?
Will Tiger be released early, during the Paris Keynote, along with the new aluminum iMac (matching the G5 and the Powerbook)?

“Yosemite”, besides having a Halfdome, it can also have a second subliminal reference to “Yosemite Sam”, a small character that makes aloud noise, often entering a scene with his guns drawn and ready for a fight. As Steve made an unusually large number of indirect (and some not so indirect) references to Microsoft and Longhorn during this latest keynote.. and he seemed exceptionally happy to do so and even pointed out the banners at the convention hall. Perhaps, Steve is ready and Paris will be the time when Apple comes out with both guns drawn, ready for a full on attack with full multi-media advertising slamming Microsoft.

  5. Yeah, they caught me in Konfab… er, Dashbord demo that Microsoft’s stock was $10 day from the real price that day, and ours was up $10 for the same period.

Some people do pick up our subtle hints.

Unlike Michael Dell’s customers, ours are smart.

  7. Rearrange the letters of steve jobs name in french and it spells “imac 4 ghz at $599 price tag available august 30 in stores worldwide”

    coincidence or????

also in late october, just in time for the US elections, there will be released the “goreimac” that has a photo of al gore on the start up scream…er…screen.

  8. You forget that “Birthday” could be refering to the fact that it’s the Macintosh’s 20th B-day this year (well, was) and that he said in january they’d do something…

    could be that in Paris, we’ll see a mini-tower (yosemite-G3 like) headless iMac… 😀

  9. There was never any chance of the iMac debuting at WWDC. That is for pro stuff not consumer. Paris sounds about right and it isn’t too late for back to school. Schools aren’t buying desktops anymore in case some of you haven’t noticed. Laptop is the name of the game at the moment. Also, don’t hold your breath for a $500 or $600 iMac. Every year since its introduction people have said the iMac must be in that price range to sell. Apple has consistently said that they are not in the low-end business. So far, that has been their mantra. It won’t change anytime soon. Also, LCD displays are going up in cost again due to lack of capacity. No headless Mac, no mini tower. The new iMac will be stunning and immediately so-called Apple supporters will start complaining.
