Thurrott gives first impressions of Apple’s iPod mini

“I don’t feel a few minutes in a store is enough to qualify me to write a review, per se, I will provide my first impressions, in order,’ Paul Thurrott writes for Paul Thurrott’s Internet Nexus. [I was going to the Apple Store] “to buy the iPod Mini for an upcoming comparative review, but they were out of stock. Apple fans will gleefully point out that this indicates that Apple is ‘selling out’ of the devices, but one of the employees at the store intimated that they hadn’t gotten too many to begin with, and frankly that’s a more likely scenario, given Apple’s historic inability to get hardware out the door.”

Thurrott calls the size of the iPod mini “much, much smaller in person than it appears on the Web” and writes, “It feels well-made, almost the perfect weight and balance for a device of that size.” He then calls it too expensive, “If this was $200 (or, better yet, $150), people would fall over themselves to buy them as they happened by Apple Stores around the country.” Thurrott likes the colors, the scroll wheel, and the user interface, but calls the iPod mini incomplete because you have to purchase the arm band, docking station, or remote control seperately, if you want them.

Thurrott unsurprisingly concludes, “In short, it’s pretty clear that the iPod Mini is a classic Apple product–well designed, too expensive, and ultimately bested by the choice-heavy competition from the PC world. You can get a lot of MP3 player for $250, and though it’s physically larger, the 20 GB Dell DJ is a much, much better deal for most people: It boasts five times the storage, gets over twice the battery life, includes WMA compatibility, features a larger, more readable screen, and includes a built-in microphone. Heck, save $50 and get the 15 GB version for just $200.”

Full thing here.

MacDailyNews Take: WMA compatibility? Don’t need it and that Dell Digital Junkbox won’t work with our store of choice, Apple’s iTunes Music Store. Thurrott’s really grasping now. Have you used the Dell DJ? The interface is laughable, as are the player’s controls in comparison to the iPod and iPod mini. We saw a guy a while back on the subway with a Dell DJ. About 10 of us (random riders) had iPods. We just looked at him and nodded to each other knowingly. He noticed. He looked sad.

  1. I have made it a policy to never ever go to his website to read his drivel any more. He is a troll trying to troll for hits for his articles by spouting ludicrous nonsense to pull the mac users in.

Oh and I see another troll crawled out from under whatever rock he was under.

  2. Oh and I see another troll crawled out from under whatever rock he was under.

Nah, he’s a fake. Grammar and spelling are way too good for the real ron!

Mac 84, I’m glad MDN posts the Thurrots crap. Gives me a laugh. As long as no-one actually goes to his site afterwards where’s the problem?

  3. “Apple’s historic inability to get hardware out the door” does bother me. They seem to have a lot of supply/distribution problems. It may be because there is such high demand for their products even before they ship. Perhaps what would be an adequate supply for anyone else is inadequate to supply the hoards that crowd Apple stores.

Still, it irritates me. I sometimes wonder if Steve is saying “always leave them wanting more.”

  4. Just a question re: ‘Ron’

So if George W Bush really does use a Mac, he loves John Kerry and is a “liberal, gay-marriage fag”.

    WTF is all that about.

I could barely imagine Dubya having sex with women – but now you’re forcing me to imagine him and John Kerry together.

I’m going for a drink now, as I can’t work out whether I’m confused or disturbed.

  5. I think that there should be a link to Thurrott website on every Apple page. The guy is absolutely hilarious, I really want to meet him, so I can see if he does actually exist… surely there cannot be someone so utterly stupid in the world. He must be a robot, built by Bill Gates.

BTW, has anyone seen what Jef Raskin has been saying about OS X? He must be losing it, cause he reckons Panther crashes a couple of time a week. My 10 Macs in work have been running since November (not counting system upgrades/restarts) and haven’t crashed once…

    Maybe Thurrott is Raskin’s long lost Son ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  6. Well, Kenny Lucius, there are tons of news articles now that the Mini is sold out. That is good press and free. I guess if I have to wait just a little for a new Apple product but the press associated with it help ensure the platform stays around, I can put up with it. Don’t know if they did it on purpose tho. Might just be serendipity.

  7. I was trying to work out who Paul Thurrot reminded me of……then it came to me. The Iraqi Information Minister! Remember that guy?-

“These iPods are useless!! We will crush them!! My Dell DJ has them surrounded!!…..”

I think they gave that guy plastic surgery and turned him into Paul Thurrot, for services to world comedy.

    Steve

    Nah, Comical Ali is way more credble! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  9. Ron, you must be a frustrated old gay man who never had the chance to come out. Now you’re accusing Apple of being a fag company. I wonder what commonsense do you use?
I think you should try to get a life and get on with your happy Windoz compatible world.
We don’t like stoopid guys around here. I don’t like homophobic comments and especially like yours associating a computer brand with a group of people.
I’d like to call you asshole; about I’m sure that some assholes are cleaner than your thoughts.

  10. I always knew this King of the MS Tools was a moron, but to try to imply that the Mini is anything less than a stellar home run hit for Apple is ludicrous!

If the tard bothered to do a little research (not in his vocabulary), he would quickly find that the $249.00 price tag for a device that contains the Hitachi Micro-Drive while offering a METAL chassis and classic iPOD interface is a BARGAIN!

But, then again, we are talking about a guy who wears DENIAL on his forehead… Thurrott is such a pathetic waste of time, I really don’t understand how he ever made it into the inner circles of technology journalism.

Then again, considering the popularity of Windows, it isn’t that big a stretch. Fortunately for me, I live in a different world. A world where my computer works all of the time, is never at risk of a virus infection and never interferes with me getting my work done far in advance of even the toughest deadline.

As for the Mini. I love mine! Best $249.00 I have ever spent. Worth every penny and then some. Only the truly clueless of the population would attempt to argue that point with anyone that actually owns one.

  11. Is this a MacDailyNews ploy to get hits too? I mentioned many times before PEOPLE!!!!! Stop paying attention to this jerk!!! Why MDN still quoting him almost every week? Is MDN desperate for hits just like Turt-rot ? Forget him or I’ll never visit MDN site!!!!!

  12. Thurrott’s site is devoted to taking a shit on Apple at any opportunity.

MDN is devoted to extolling Apple at any opportunity.

Thurrot’s site finds no good in Apple.

MDN finds no fault in Apple.

How can one side of the coin get away from the other side?

  13. MDN finds no fault in Apple

Rather funny coming a day after that very long thread criticising Apple’s marketing efforts. Anyway, someone’s got to counter the FUD. At least MDN are living in reality, unlike PT

  14. I don’t feel a few minutes reading Paul Thurotten is enough to qualify me to write a review, per se… hell, I don’t have to read him at all in order to provide my first impressions of how many times he was dropped on his head as a child. My guess: a lot.

  15. He can explain away the iPod mini’s sell-out status as manufacturing errors on Apple’s part, and explain MS’s irresponsible attitude towards security and patching as something we should all just accept.

He clearly doesn’t live on the same planet as everyone else.

And he calls his Internet-nexus.com site as ‘An honest look at Windows alternatives’, he’s quite the comedian too.

  16. Any hotrodder can tell you: “It’s not about Bang per buck; it’s about Bang per cubic inch (or cubic centimeter).

That’s why the iPod mini is like the (BMW) Morris Mini.

  17. What are some basic things lacking in the Dell? Let’s see…

    * No auto-synch

    * No audiobooks

    * Can’t transfer files like an HD… unless BOTH computers have special Dell software installed!

    * The built-in voice recorder can’t actually DO anything with the files–they can’t be transferred to your computer, unlike the full-size iPod’s optional recording

  18. “Apple fans will gleefully point out that this indicates that Apple is ‘selling out’ of the devices, but one of the employees at the store intimated that they hadn’t gotten too many to begin with,… “

Ummm, could that be because Apple has to ship 100K units to people who pre-ordered? Unsurprisingly, Thurrott still has no clue what pre-ordering a product means.

  19. It is wrong to think that Thurrott is some psycho living in his own world–he isn’t.

He’s a guy that gets paid by the word and gets paid by people/companies that make money from the Windows platform. He’s not some nameless blogger, but instead is a someone with a pecuniary interest in talking up Windows.

In less nice terms, he’s not nuts..he’s a whore.

Don’t insult a whore by calling the whore nuts…just call the whore the whore.
