Report: Apple MacBook shipments stronger than expected; 15-inch MacBook (not Pro) model planned?
Monday, July 03, 2006 - 11:15 AM EST

"Sales of Apple Computer's Intel Core Duo-based MacBook laptops have been stronger than expected, boosting monthly shipments of 13.3-inch MacBooks from Taiwan-based Asustek Computer to about 120,000 units in June, up from about 100,000 units when the company started shipping the new computers in April, according to sources at Taiwan-based notebook makers," Celia Lin and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes.

"Shipments will continue to increase in the second half as Apple's competitive pricing for MacBooks will continue to stimulate demand. For all of 2006, Apple may deliver two million iBook and MacBook laptops in addition to one million MacBook Pro notebooks, the sources estimated. If realized, Apple's notebook sales in 2006 would represent a 39% increase from the 2.16 million units shipped in 2005 as estimated by IDC (International Data Corporation), the sources indicated," Lin and Shen report.

Lin and Shen report, "Other sources indicated that Asustek's shipments of MacBooks already reached 300,000 units in June, up from 200,000 in May and 100,000 in April, according to a July 3 Chinese-language Commercial Times report... Sources contacted by Lin also noted that Apple may expand its MacBook family by introducing a 15.4-inch widescreen lineup."

And this 15'' Macbook would offer what?? how exactly does it fall between the 13mb and the 15mbp??? they have the same specs!! Thats never happening...

Jul 03, 06 - 10:30 am Comment from: j

great... a fifteen inch notebook with integrated graphics. Yipee

Jul 03, 06 - 10:31 am Comment from: Loru

Ok, graphics...the only difference...

Jul 03, 06 - 10:33 am Comment from: Too Hot!

Where do these numbers come from? It just sounds like someone is just guessing here.
I can't believe any report that relies on un-named "sources".
I hope they're right though

Jul 03, 06 - 10:38 am Comment from: carlo

talking out his ass. will never happen.

Jul 03, 06 - 10:40 am Comment from: Charko

When the new 'Mac Pros' come out this year and the iMacs have been updated, the combined sales of Apple computers will reach new heights and the analysts wont just be influenced by sales of iPods.

Jul 03, 06 - 10:47 am Comment from: Charko

Too Hot!,

all the indications - whether from small retailers, larger retailers like Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/new-for-you/top-sellers/-/pc/all/ref=sv_pc_1/002-5508175-0193669?_encoding=UTF8

or the manufacturers themselves point to extremely strong sales of Macbook Pros.

Jul 03, 06 - 10:53 am Comment from: mike k.

Apple seems to have replicated the problem it had with product line differentiation with the G4. The iBook and the Powerbook had very similar specs by the end. Now with Intel, the only difference is screen size and integrated graphics. A 15" MB would knock out one of those pegs.

Is there anything they can do to the MBP line to beef it up? I see them switching the MBP line to new chips so that speed, and graphics are its selling points.

Jul 03, 06 - 10:53 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Well, okay if the MacBook Pro processors are upped to the 64-bit Core2 Duo (whatever it's called) when they're available and the MacBook stays with the current CoreDuo processor. This kind of move would really differentiate between consumer and Pro laptops.

Yeah, 15" with the integrated graphics card. Brilliant.

Jul 03, 06 - 10:58 am Comment from: Big Al

I need at least a 15" screen. One of them Chameleon skined, color changing MacBooks would be nicer and cheaper than a Pro model.

Mmmmmm, yellow.

Jul 03, 06 - 11:01 am Comment from: Channel Z

I want a 8-10" MacPDA with a touch screen and a single CPU/integrated graphics digital optical/analog port and a completly flash based drive/memory.

No hard drive, no cd drive, great battery life.

Gimmme!!

Jul 03, 06 - 11:08 am Comment from: think...people

It is all about price points! Look, you go from $1499 MB to a $1999 MBP...come on thats $500! By this fall, I think they will come out with a 15.4" MB. All the 13.3" MB will come in black and white. and the low end 13.3" will fall to a price point of $999. The low end of 15.4" will be $1399. Would anyone want to take a guess on the specs to the 15.4" MB!?

Jul 03, 06 - 11:20 am Comment from: soon to be apple switcher

If Apple is thinking of expanding its current product line, then it should make a smaller MacBookPro - something around 12" would be nice. The 12" Powerbook was the best Apple laptop IMHO. I'd buy a new Apple laptop tomorrow if there was something in the Pro line that was smaller than 15".

Jul 03, 06 - 11:23 am Comment from: pat

I agree with Channel Z. Sony introduced a core solo/ 16gb flash-based portable recently - imagine how nice an Apple one would be.

Charko:

I realize that. I was just disputing the so called "source" of the article. I certainly would like to see Apple outpace the rest of the computer industry in sales, and surpass the 5% share this year. I think it is possible to double the market share.

However, I would like to see reliable figures. I'll wait for Apple to release its quartarly numbers before I break out the champagne.

As for new MB form factors, I doubt that Apple will go for a bigger MB. Smaller, may be.
A 10+" tablet notebook would be my wish-come-true!

Jul 03, 06 - 11:26 am Comment from: Jeffrey

I hope the 15.4" Macbook happens. The 13" seems small. It would be the perfect middle ground for a student like me. This way I won't have to shell out over $500 bucks for a MBP to get a 15" screen.

Jul 03, 06 - 11:32 am Comment from: Geo

These numbers are odd. An increase from 2.16 million to 3 million is not a 39% change.

Jul 03, 06 - 11:36 am Comment from: Too Hot!

Geo:

3,000,000 - 2,160,000 = 840,000

840,000/2,160,000 = 0.38888888889 or approximately 0.39

0.39 x 100 = 39%

The problem is the source of these numbers, not whether they add up.

Cheers

Jul 03, 06 - 11:37 am Comment from: Jake

The 13.3" screen on the MB seems surprisingly BIG! Honestly, I got one for my wife and I worried it would seem small compared to her previous 15" Dell. It doesn't seem small at all! Anyone concerned about the screen size should try a MB at an Apple store before dismissing it.
Similarly, I had worries about the glossy coating--but there is very little reflection while the colors really POP!
A 15" MB, with lower-end specs and a lower price than the MBP, would be very appealing to many, though.

Jul 03, 06 - 11:40 am Comment from: Kate

I predict Apple is closer to 300K MacBooks in June than 120K MacBooks. All those who held onto their Apple stock the last few months will be very happy.
WooHoo!

Jul 03, 06 - 12:22 pm Comment from: G-Spank

It amazes me how 99% of the posters here miss the unbelievable main point of the story. If Apple is growing laptops at 40% that is gonna DWARF the industries growth of laptops sales, probably by 25-30%. That mains people are switching, in BIG numbers.

Now please resume the discussion (er, is it whining) on what videocard the 15" is gonna have.

Jul 03, 06 - 12:33 pm Comment from: jeff

I just got back from CFUnited, a ColdFusion Developer's Conference held in Bethesda, MD last week. There were over 900 attendees and I'd guess there were at least 600 laptops. Of those, I'd say somewhere between 30 and 40 percent of the laptops were Apples. And many of the "main" developers in ColdFusion, including some who work for Adobe, are owners of MacBook Pro's!

Jul 03, 06 - 01:18 pm Comment from: LaserKun

MDN Magic Word: (ssshhh, quiet please) "Must", as in, Apple "must" make a 9 or 10" screen MacBook, no CD drive, no modem, BUT "must" have ethernet, firewire (400 or 800 is fine), USB 2.xx, BlueTooth, and of course MUST have AirPort card.

It MUST be as light as they can make it also. 1 MB RAM would be great, and about 60 GB drive. My first Mac was a 9" black and white screen; that was all you got back then, and I did much productive work on that thing. We "MUST" have a very small, lighweight MacBook, don't need nary CD drive to clog up the works. I haven't used mine in months; it will probably be the next thing to go from all Macs...

Jul 03, 06 - 01:34 pm Comment from: AlanAudio

If Apple grows it's laptop business at 40%, then analysts will mark Apple down as they will try to suggest that the iPod business isn't as important to Apple as it used to be.

Jul 03, 06 - 01:41 pm Comment from: LinuxGuy

G-Spank, you beat me to it. Most posters are locking in on some pet wish, but the 40% market growth -- and that is the low estimate of the two numbers given -- is the big story, which is: THEY ARE SWITCHING IN SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS!!!!! (Sorry for shouting).

The guidance session where Jobs will talk to the analysts (and analists) comes sometime around mid month after a completed quarter. That means mid July. Hang on to your horses, just as I held on to all of my AAPL shares. If the fools had driven the price down below 50, I had agreement from my wife to buy another 2k shares.

I really believe that of all of the well known companies, none has better prospects than Apple. I am betting my financial future on it.

Jul 03, 06 - 02:04 pm Comment from: G-Spank

me too, LinuxGuy, me too.

Jul 03, 06 - 02:48 pm Comment from: Cubert

Pat,
That Sony Vaio is UGLY!!! If Apple makes an ultra=portable, I hope it's nicer looking than that POS.

G-Spank and LinuxGuy,
You are right on the money. I can't wait for the Apple numbers to come out. My brother is a financial analyst for a small company. They have been dumping Microsucks stock and buying up Apple for 3-4 months now.
