Apple to launch 9.7-inch iPad Pro, not Air 3; likely to support Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil

“Apple will further differentiate the next-generation 9.7-inch iPad from its predecessor by making it part of the new iPad Pro line, according to sources,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac.

“Much like the MacBook Pro comes in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, the iPad Pro will soon come in 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch variations,” Gurman reports. “This trend follows Apple not calling its 12-inch MacBook a new Air despite developing the product as an apparent successor to the MacBook Air.”

“The new 9.7-inch iPad Pro will debut at Apple’s Tuesday, March 15th event and begin shipping as soon as March 18th,” Gurman reports. “The smaller iPad Pro will have nearly identical features and specifications as the bigger model, bringing along the A9X processor and RAM upgrades from the 12.9-inch model.”

  1. This is just plain retarded!

Knowing Cook, this thing will still not support features the so called iPad Pro does, but please believe that both wont support features that the iPhone 6S enjoys.

    Cook is outrageously incompetent.

He actually surprises me everyday. Just when I think sh*t can’t get any dumber at Apple, Cook pushes the envelope further.

    1. Put your real name instead of Apple’s in your pseudonym and you have it right.

A 9.7″ iPad Pro will fill the bill nicely. I checked out the current siZe and it’s too big for my purposes. They’ll sell a ton of these, and they know it. You can go back into your corner to your chair with your near worn-out dunce hat on. The only thing pushing the envelop on incompetent and totally dumb is you.

    1. So, the talking heads on Wall Street believe that there is no catalyst to stimulate a new wave of customers upgrading their old iPads. Any idiot would know that the “Pro” features will be offered in all of the iPad sizes. Not sure if Tim Cook has the Apple Pencils manufacturing rate ready to match the new full “Pro” lineup yet. Tim, get your head in the game this time!

  2. It seems to me that a stylus/Pencil-equipped iPad would be the ideal creative device if it not only worked in the field offline, but it also allowed for WIRED connection to a Mac to use for REAL TIME artistic collaboration and interaction using all the power that a Mac offers. One shouldn’t be forced to use iCloud in order to create with an iPad.

Wondering out loud, which would sell more:
    a) a new 17″ MacBook Pro
    b) a 12″ iPad
    c) an 11″ MacBook with only 1 connector

I gotta believe the pent-up demand for a kickass portable workstation would blow Cook away. The guy honestly thinks that everyone wants iOS and iCloud all the time. He’s apparently never had to work away from WiFi a minute in his life.

  3. All Great!.. But pencil support has to be there… It has to Or its a no go

Now we need an iOS-PRO.. To complete the package,, with user manageable file sys, easy file transfer ..etc…
    A less limiting iOS version.

And i think apple can market this iOS-PRO as an upgrade for pro useres and charge for it.
I will pay in a blink of an eye!

And we need more robust, comprehensive pro apps…
Maybe more ram will help this area as well.

    1. I have a hard time visualising how this exposed hierarchical file system would operate on iPad, unless it was actually a Surface Pro that you were lusting after. There’s already a file system on iPad, you don’t like it, I get that, but until it bothers me and another million users I don’t see Apple engineers busting their butts to come up with a new one. Besides we all know Sir Jonathan loathes visible file systems like Angela Ahrendts despises exposed stitching in her couture. Unless of course fashion evolves in that direction, much as happened with the formerly maligned GUI skeuomorphism.

      1. It would work exactly the same way as it does in osx. When asked to save or open, The file interface will show up….. A core , consistant interface in which i can organize my resources as i like them according to my work flow. Where i can name and rename files….put them where i want.. Copy them.. Duplicate them, move them , delete them ….Look in files info. Etc.
Have you used icloud drive? They have it there( more or less). …With the drawback that it does not work offline… And it costs( storage and data streaming)
Its not the issue of inventing the wheel here… Its an issue of putting the wheels back on …. When one has not invented the perfect levitation system yet..
Its like having a desk with drawers for orgsnization rather a desk with no drawers.. Having drawers wont harm anyone who does not like to use them .. But not having them harms those who like have the flexibility.
The present file sytem is as someone else put it once ( an abstract art)…. And yes Herself.. I do lust over surfaces file system…. And the fact that i can run full fledged applications on it.. Like photoshop, 3ds , premier… Etc..
But i want my ipadPRO to be as powerful and flexible… I want to be able to run photoshop, fcpx, full fleged 3d modeling etc programs.
        At the moment i cant.

As for sir jhonotan… He can be odd sometimes… I dont think he is cut out for ui or software usability design .. He is an awesome industrial designer.
I dont believe the hidden file sys was his idea… I think Scott Forstal was more likely behind the idea .. !?

Also Herself… If apple wants to expand the ipad user base… Then they have to look beyond the millions who use it casuslly.
If they choose to call their new iPad PRO.. It has to have the capacity to be a pro device….
Hence i suggested that apple comeup with iOSPRO. An upgrade to ios for a fee. Those who care to have a more flexile and robust os can pay and get the the real-deal, the pro version.
Not only it gives us a choice.. It can be an income revenue for apple…! If they are seriouse about the pro market… Which i whole hartedly believe they shoukd be,, at least ProSumer leverl. If they want to expand i to enterprise and seriouse content creation area.

Lastly im convinced that apple listens and not all that sir jhonotan desires transpires.
He was adamantly against the pencil being used as a navigation device… There are videos of him about this where he preaches that we use the finger as navigation tool.. And pencil only for drawing..
Apple choose to go this route and limited the functinality of the pencil in the ios 9.3 beta…
On the day this news came out.. I wrote 12 emails to different contacts i corispond with and feedback at apple… Blasting them for the stupidity of the choice… Im sure others did as well.. Or maybe not?
I Asked mdn to put up the article about it…and started an opinion thread.. Most supporte the stupidity of this move.
Exactly the next day apple put out a note saying full functinality of the pencil will be put back in on the next beta before final release.
So we do have an effect.

Now i keep my fingers crossed for IosPRO… And also the ability to run full fleged application on my tablets … So that i can stop lusting over the surface. ( i have even sugested a hybrid device with adaptable os.. Twist and fold back or detach screen. Something along the BEAUTIFUL and super compact new macbook… .. The new macbook is proof it can be done beautifully )!
Anyway my lust over a more functionsl pro level tablet is exactly the same as many of us lusting over larger screen phones of the competition before Apple decided to release larger screens phones themselves.. And it turned out to be a huge success.

        P.s..herself .. I responded to you post in the tim/box/fbi thread.. Hope u saw it . ✌️

  4. Yep, credit card ready.
Thing is though, the March 15 date keeps being bandied about. Shouldn’t Apple have put out an official invite by now? Tech journos and others would need to time to book airline/train tix and hotels.
