Boring Galaxy S7 isn’t beleaguered Samsung’s next big thing

“Samsung’s new Galaxy S7, for all of its bells and whistles, isn’t Samsung’s Next Big Thing,” Jay McGregor writes for Forbes. “It’s kind of just another smartphone.”

“The backlash to Samsung’s water susceptible, microSD-less, small batteried Galaxy S6 has clearly informed the design choices of the S7. But I wonder if regaining those lost Samsung users took priority over innovation,” McGregor writes. “The S7 is undoubtedly an incremental upgrade that refines and builds on last year’s S6. That’s obvious to everyone.”

“Samsung has a habit for the audacious, it doesn’t shy away from an expensive gamble or bombastic idea that’s destined for the dustbin. Curved screens, air gestures, ‘beauty modes’ and mildly offensive theatre productions are just some of Samsung’s efforts to be different in previous years,” McGregor writes. “Nothing like this was present in this year. It was, by Samsung’s standards, a very bland launch with no surprises and no Samsung wow factor.”

  1. Well, well…Samsung is now subject to the same “what have you done for us lately” attitude that was formerly reserved for Apple.

But the article appears to be crap, overall. Samsung has never been known for being “audacious” or having a “wow” factor. Indeed, the author pegs Samsung fairly well when he states that “Samsung…doesn’t shy away from an expensive gamble or bombastic idea that’s destined for the dustbin.”

Can’t make those phones any bigger Samsung…what are you going to do now?

Destined for the dustbin…Samsung’s new motto.

  2. The smart phone market is mature. There isn’t a wow factor feature laying in the weeds. The iPhone has won the premium market. Android has the rest. Flagship Android phoneds play to a fervent by smaller market. There are now many quality Android phones to satisy the niche.

Have q nice day with your S7 G5 Xperia. I’m sure you’ll be very happy.

  4. Wha? But Samsung raised the name by a whole digit! No Galaxy S6s! How could that have failed to excite the masses?

I guess the tick-tock naming convention that Apple is using is working out just fine. Let’s let it continue to be a non-issue.

People worried about Apple’s upgrade path can just jump on the new annual plan, and stop fretting about it.

Oh, and sorry I didn’t have anything important to say about Samsung. Because, you know, not important.

  5. The key change that must be noted is that they removed that dead give-away that is isn’t an iPhone by removing their name from the top of the phone. Now the shallow end of the gene pool can pretend that they have real iPhones.
