Apple MVNO coming soon?

Business Insider is reporting that Apple may actually be following Google’s Project Fi into the ‘becoming a carrier’ field,” Seth Weintraub reports for 9to5 Mac. “‘Sources close to Apple say that the company is privately trialling an MVNO service in the US, but is also currently in talks with telecoms companies in Europe about bringing the service there too.'”

“MVNO or Mobile Virtual Network Operator is a wireless communications services provider that does not own the wireless network infrastructure over which the MVNO provides services to its customer,” Weintraub reports. “Google’s Project Fi uses Sprint and T-Mobile’s infrastructure and combines them to become a ‘super-carrier.'”

Weintraub reports, “Apple of course announced the so far iPad-limited Apple SIM last year which allows you to choose between a handful of network carriers for iPad data on a month to month basis.”

  1. I would love to use an Apple MVNO and would love to see an industry disruptive wired and wireless VNO. It would be nice to have one account to handle wired and wireless data.
Also, Apple should offer a 4G LTE hotspot that integrates with Apple’s Airport software on client devices.

  2. I would totally be on-board if they would include waiving data usage incurred while using the upcoming AppleTV streaming service eg not counting against your data usage. That would be a huge game-changer imo.

  3. Been waiting for Apple MNVO since launch of the original iPhone. Actually, I’ve been waiting for Apple to put their own satellites into orbit and destroy the like of AT&T and Verizon.

  4. An Apple MVNO couldn’t come fast enough to the Canadian telecom market. Anything Apple could do to break up the horrible duopoly of Robbers and Hell would be welcomed with open arms up here. Please don’t ignore Canada, Apple, if this is one of your goals.
