With Split View in OS X El Capitan, going full screen on your Mac finally makes sense

“One of the more interesting features of OS X El Capitan is the new Split View, which lets you run two apps side by side without any distractions (other than the other app, of course),” Jason Snell writes for Macworld. It’s sort of like full-screen mode, except with two apps.”

“I’ve never been a huge fan of Full Screen Mode, mostly because I am frequently switching between at least two apps,” Snell writes. “But adding a second app to Full Screen Mode gives the feature an extra dimension that makes it much more intriguing to me. ”

Snell writes, “The problem is that some of the underlying assumptions of Full Screen Mode can’t be made in Split View, and that leads to some really weird interface issues in the El Capitan public beta… it’s interesting to see how adding one new wrinkle to a longstanding OS feature can lead to some unintended and weird consequences. Here’s hoping most of these wrinkles are ironed out before El Capitan arrives in the fall.”

MacDailyNews Take: Any OS X El Capitan public beta users have any ideas?

  1. I’d be perfectly happy if full-screen mode went away completely. It’s not really difficult to size windows the way you want them–especially on multiple monitor systems. Full-screen on tablets makes sense, but on a desktop it just makes me use bad language when it happens.

    1. I agree it gets in the way. Apple, add it for those who need/want it, but make a checkbox to disable it if I don’t want it to ever happen. Or give me the terminal code to disable it.

    2. I absolutely love full screen and spaces navigated with gestures on my track pad. It’s nice to have options and I’m looking forward to trying Apple’s split screen implementation.

  2. I think Split View is the future… windows mode is dead. I would love to access all my apps via Notiications… a better iTunes integration with cover star etc… view my photos library to drap and drop like Inspector. etc

  3. At home, might be useful. At work. I’d need too many splits. I have about 4 or 5 apps going at once. Won’t know how much I like it until I get to really use it.

  4. I am going to LOVE this. I cannot count the number of times I have had to toggle back and forth between two apps. If this could be enhanced to allow for an additional split on one side into two. Example, left side top to bottom one app as above, right side split into two for a top and bottom app.

For those with 27″+ displays, it would be fantastic.

    1. Yes, dual-screen is essentially the same idea as Split View…. two apps side-by-side.

Split View does currently suffer from some weirdness, mostly related to third-party apps that aren’t yet fully updated to recognize it.

  5. It has its limitations though! Without a trackpad its a pain to use and isn’t flexible enough. Say you have two apps side by side and you want to remove one of them and replace with another, you can search for an app that isn’t closed or replace that already running app on either side easily.

  6. Full screen mode is only for people who use 1 app at a time.
I usually use 5 or more apps at one time, accessing the dock is very important to me.

BetterTouchTools is the Holy Grail of the window management system. It can snap the window full size without making new space and without hiding the dock and menu bar.

  7. Ahmad, as said above, Full Screen is great for people with multiple monitors. I run 2-3 screens at a time for work and with full screen, its great to shift between them and work on multiple at once.

On one monitor it is a bit awkward to open a PDF, hit full screen and have it shift completely.

  8. Hate to say it, but I have Windows friends who demo design changes with split-screen — with a couple of clicks they have the old design on the left, new design on the right — and I’ve longed for just such a feature on the Mac for a while…

The best two proposed solutions were by HOJX and DustyKiddo.

  9. I haven’t found a reason to use apps on my iMac. With web based apps effectively being available for most, I flip between windows easily. I would love if there was an iPhone emulation mode so iPhone apps could be used on the iMac. I could have flightboard open while I’m working to watch airport info. Or many other uses.

  10. I was a full screen guy on the Mac,But now with split screen, it makes sense now. And even more sense on my 27 inch iMac. I love it now more than full screen.
