iOS device users are huge porn lovers

“A new end-of-the-year report by one of the web’s most popular adult sites shows that iOS users are still totally in love with watching porn on the go,” Mike Wehner reports for TUAW.

“According to Pornhub’s traffic data,” Wehner reports, “over 40% of the visits coming from a mobile operating system come from Apple’s iOS, putting it in second place behind Android (49%) and ahead of Windows (2%) and BlackBerry (1%).”

Wehner reports, “When you consider that recent market share measurements put iOS at somewhere near 11% — compared to Android’s 84% — it’s clear that on a per-device basis, Apple’s platform sees a lot more NSFW action.”

Pornhub Insights reports, “Apple’s iOS still represents a significant 40.2% of overall Pornhub mobile viewers, and they too have some rather interesting search action going on. For instance, they are more into ‘lesbian’ type porn than their Android counterparts, but are a little less turned on by ‘cartoon’ type porn, which is more popular among Andorid users.”

We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone. Folks who want porn can buy an Android phone.Steve Jobs, April, 2010

  1. iOS users just plain use there phones and tablets more than Android users. It’s that simple.

The iPhone is a hand held computer that can also make phone calls.

Android devices are phones that can also post selfies to facebook.

  2. Before the media comes blasting us in our faces, they better recognize that we’re not going to just swallow these statistics. There’s more to the story. It’s a sticky situation.

  3. This “study” is meaningless, and their conclusion is actually backwards.

They compared market share to porn site visit percentage.

That’s misleading, because it’s well-established that iOS owners simply USE their devices more than Android sufferers for ALL usage, so OF COURSE it’s also going to be skewed that way for porn sites….or financial sites…or Disney sites…

The correct and more meaningful comparison would be iOS users as a percentage of OVERALL traffic vs their percentage of porn viewers. That would paint a drastically different picture.

Anyone have those “iOS share of mobile web browsing” numbers handy? I don’t feel looking for them…

    1. Agree. Here is a rough analysis. Let’s assume 70% of all web traffic (or online purchases) is iOS and 25% is Android (and 5% is other). Expected iOS porn usage at this rate is 70%, so the reported rate of 40% is substantially LESS than expected based on web traffic patterns. It is 43% LESS.

On the other hand, if Android accounts for 25% of web traffic (or online purchases), then 49% Android porn use represents 100% MORE than the expected rate of 25%.

So: 43% LESS than expected for iOS versus 100% MORE than expected for Android.

  4. Like Mark Twain once wrote: There’s lies, damned lies, and statistics.

Mike Wehner cherry-picked his numbers. Unit sales of devices running iOS might well be around 11%. But…

According to Quantcast’s data, Apple’s iOS accounted for 60.3 percent of the mobile web browsing traffic in the U.S. last month.

So the observation that 40% of visits to porn sites are from iOS lead Wehner to conclude that iOS users are horn dogs. In fact, the precise opposite is true.

Statistics show that users of OS X and iOS are more affluent, better educated, spend more money on apps, use more apps, brows the Web more, get more done, and—apparently—have more important things to do than look at porn.

  5. This is simply a function of iOS owners who do more Internet-related “stuff,” compared to Android owners who treat their phones like glorified “feature phones.” Look at the mobile stats for things like online sales, app sales, and general “web surfing.” iOS users dominate in percentage of access for mobile device platforms.

In fact, iOS users usually have the highest percentage (often BY FAR) in these types of mobile Internet usage “studies.” The fact that iOS is SECOND in this case (behind Android) shows that iOS users are LESS likely to watch porn on their mobile devices, compared to Android users, and compared to Internet usage in general.

  6. Ah, pornhub, I love that website for free sex vids together with eporner and http://theporndude.com/. Looks like a lot of men started to view porn on android/iphone.

One of the reasons is prolly a cheaper mobile internet subscription(more/unlimited bandwith) + 3G/4G availability plays a big part for the huge increase in cellphone traffic to pornhub. It has become affordable to watch this kind of content on a cellphone.

Personally, maybe I’m just getting old, but I still prefer to view my smut on a Mac with a big screen. I assume the younger generation these days use their phone for whatever is possible.

Anyways, pornhub is really running behind on the HD porn field. Is it too expensive or why do almost none of their vids have a 720p option?
