Apple launches massive World AIDS Day 2014 Campaign for (RED)

To mark World AIDS Day 2014, Apple and leading app developers are inviting customers to help (RED) achieve the goal of an AIDS-free generation. For the next two weeks, a special section of the App Store called Apps for (RED) will offer 25 apps with exclusive new content where all proceeds will go directly to the Global Fund to fight AIDS. In addition, Apple will donate a portion of sales at Apple’s retail and online stores around the world on two of the biggest shopping days of the year: Friday, November 28 and Monday, December 1.

“Apple is a proud supporter of (RED) because we believe the gift of life is the most important gift anyone can give,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a statement. “For eight years, our customers have been helping fight AIDS in Africa by funding life-saving treatments which are having a profoundly positive impact. This year we are launching our biggest fundraising push yet with the participation of Apple’s retail and online stores, and some of the brightest minds in the App Store are lending their talents to the effort as well.”

Apple and App Store developers will generate donations for (RED) in several ways over the next two weeks:

• From Monday, November 24 through Sunday, December 7, the App Store’s Apps for (RED) campaign will feature 25 fan-favorite apps with exclusive new content. Every time a customer purchases a participating (PRODUCT)RED app or an exclusive In-App Purchase, all proceeds will go to the Global Fund.

• On Friday, November 28, Apple customers in the US will receive a special edition (RED) iTunes® gift card with the purchase of select Apple products. For each gift card distributed, Apple will also donate a percentage to the Global Fund.

• On Monday, December 1—World AIDS Day—Apple will donate a portion of every sale at Apple’s retail and online stores to the Global Fund to fight AIDS.

“Apple isn’t just in the fight to end AIDS. They are setting a new bar for business, giving $75 million and counting to the Global Fund as part of their partnership with (RED),” said Bono, co-founder of (RED). “I couldn’t be prouder to work with them.”

Apps for (RED) marks the first-ever global App Store initiative in support of (RED). Participating developers have created (RED)-inspired content and experiences for their fans to enjoy, including:

• Angry Birds players can perfect their bird-flinging with (RED)’s Mighty Feathers and challenge themselves to a bonus golden egg level.

    1. So much money and effort has been donated for a “cancer cure” for as long as I can remember, that being about 40 years.. Absolutely nothing has come of it. Nothing will because the drug companies love cancer, it makes them so much money. They control all the research and there is no reason for them to find a “cure”.

      1. I’ve worked in a pharmaceutical company for decades and was diagnosed with cancer last year. I can say with 100% certainty you have utterly no idea what you’re talking about and I find your comments offensive. Comment on what you know about. That should limit your posts.

        1. Wow! You certainly changed my mind. Your ad hominem reasoning and unsupported opinions are a certainly a much more compelling argument than my decades of seeing what actually happens. From here on, I promise not to let fact, analysis, and experience get in the way of my opinions.

        2. IndyMac, if you take the chemotherapy you will recover a bit at first. If the cancer returns further chemo will make it worse and you will not make it. I wish you good luck and urge you to look at the Burzynski footage!

        3. Having seen what happened to two great men who had cures for certain types of cancer I can tell you that Terry’s comment about drug companies loving cancer because it gives them a lot of money (and power and control) is very valid.

The pills and drugs to nuke the cancer paradigm rules pretty well rules the day, the drain the swamp and super boost the environment, well that’s still a far fetched notion that modern medicine for the most part still wants nothing to do with.

It isn’t much different than Microsoft running a very successful FUD drive and a divide and conquer (embrace extend extinguish) approach. Through it all fortunately Apple has survived and now finally some folks are getting the idea of an ecosystem, a systematic holistic life supporting approach. It’s still met with resistance, a lot of resistance.

Finding a cure for group of cancer has economic implications. It also has implications on the ecosystem.

          Good luck with your treatment.

You don’t have the power to offend me and as I am never 100% certain of anything I may comment about stuff I know nothing at all.

So maybe just maybe this whole post is one sick lie.

          Then again, maybe it isn’t.

      2. Cancer is a complex genetic and epigenetic problem that can occur by many different pathways. It is not surprising that progress has been very slow.

Saying nothing has come of it or that there are people acting to hamper a cure is a disservice to all the work and progress that have been made on a problem which has proven as difficult to solve as aging itself.

One day when their is a cure, it will be because scientists never gave up despite a lot of disappointments on the way.

        1. in the absence of a ‘cure’ the prudent path is prevention. the old saw says we are what we eat, which is an excellent starting point.

personally, my diet is largely paleo and to the extent that it’s feasible, organic.

    1. On one hand we have people working to solve a deadly disease.

On the other hand we have gaz making snarky comments that people should only try to solve one disease at a time, an approach that would hold up success on many fronts.

I am going to side with the people doing good in the world.

    2. Exactly right!

I don’t have an issue with left wing Tim supporting pet causes at the latest and greatest San Fran art opening fawning the enlightened cocktail crowd.

What I have an issue with is hoping Tim BREAKS OUT of the PC PRISON he is in and support causes that run the gamut of the political spectrum!

What about HUNTERS FOR THE HUNGRY?

      What about CASTING FOR RECOVERY?

What about all the charities that help people in poverty, injured veterans without a job, the homeless and many, many more.

As others have pointed out — heart disease and cancer kill far more people than minuscule Aids statistics. Start there. Ebola is a far greater threat than anything mentioned.

But causes I referenced above are just not fashionable. Bono won’t fly in for a free concert and USA TODAY won’t banner the headline on page one as they did today.

Only liberal causes count in the elite suites, the media and the rest certainly not on Tim’s radar for political reasons — the WORST reason of all.

      Pity the rich fools …

    1. As for AIDS as a preventable disease, apparently many Americans (as well as those in other developed countries) have discovered that it is preventable and have figured out how to protect themselves against it, which explains the decline in the rate of growth of the disease.

Unfortunately, in the developing world, especially in Africa, your advice is useless. AIDS is a disease that affects societies where their social norms make it impossible for people to protect themselves. Men are wantonly promiscuous, and their wives (and mistresses, and other prostitutes) end up the victims of their promiscuity. Add to that governments’ refusal to acknowledge AIDS as a crisis (due to its lingering gay stigma that came from the developed world) and you no longer can control it.

    2. Yes, because HIV has never been transferred through any other means. I’m sure children born to parents with it will be happy to know you blame them for the actions of their parents. And people who have received it through blood transfusions will be ecstatic. Not huge numbers on that basis, but you can’t just ignore HIV/AIDS.

    3. AIDS is a virus. If it mutates you will get it too.

The AIDS virus is also a very “clever” virus. Knowing how to defeat this virus can give mankind on inkling into solving other medical problems. Some that might not even exist yet. Using a virus to attack cancer cells is even a possibility.

Try to think a little. Think different.

    4. What right do you have to declare Tim Cook’s views on cancer? None.

What useful reason is there to hold up a cure for one disease until a cure is found for a completely different disease? None.

What benefit does all-caps bring to irrational statements? None.

  1. I love the idiots who seem to think that by supporting a particular charity Apple don’t care about anything else, and in fact seem to want people with other diseases to die or something. If you don’t want any money to go to this charity, then don’t buy a (RED) product.

  2. I say that they use some of the money to educate teens on the lifelong disaster abortion causes in their lives. After all stopping abortion is saving lives. Just my two cents. I really can’t stand the murdering of babies either.
