Apple’s ‘iPad Pro’ release date, rumors and more

“Is Apple working on a big-screen iPad Pro to follow the iPad Air, and when is the next iPad coming out?” David Price reports for Macworld UK. “Will the bigger iPad, whether it’s called iPad Pro, iPad 6, iPad 2014 or simply new iPad, feature a larger screen – or will it even be a touchscreen MacBook/iPad hybrid?”

“Speculation suggests there’s a 12.9in-screen iPad in the works, known as the iPad Pro. There are mixed reports on when the iPad 6 or iPad Pro is likely to launch,” Price reports. “Ming-Chi Kuo, a KGI Securities analyst with a highly respected track record when it comes to Apple predictions, has published a report claiming that, on the tablet front, we’ll see only a new iPad Air this year, with the iPad Pro (and an update to the iPad mini) following in 2015.”

“Yet previous reports suggested that Apple is working on two new 12.9in iPads for a 2014 launch. The first – a 2K model – is expected in April, while the rumoured 4K models are forecast for an October 2014 release,” Price reports. “According to DigiTimes, Apple has turned to Taiwan-based Quanta Computer to manufacture the bigger iPad. However the report suggests that Quanta expects to “encounter several challenges” when it comes to building the bigger iPad, which could cause limited supply of the tablet upon launch. It’s believed Apple has been growing increasingly interested in launching a bigger iPad because the company expects tablets to eventually replace PCs.”

  1. The only reason to release a larger iPad is as a laptop replacement for folks who need both but can’t justify owing both. And as we have seen with Windows 8 the UI as much as they wont admit it, is both a terrible touch UI and a terrible desktop UI. It’s especially bad in form factors smaller than 11″
The logic between keeping iOS and OSX separate makes all the more sense when you see others try and rig something like Windows 8 together,

    1. I could see this being useful for some people. There is no harm in having a range of available street sizes. Even at the same screen size as a MacBook air, iOS offers a different experience than Mavericks does.

I do like the idea of a more precise digitizer.

    2. Actually at first glance the Win 8 interface on phone tablets looks clean and logical, I can see the appeal. However that’s as good as it gets on a small device a few tiles look neat but the more you add and that is inevitable to actually use the things it be ones a total nightmare. The complexity becomes like a confusing mess, like trying to find your way through a mazy and those simplistic icons clear as they are when only a few are there become indistinguishable when there are lots the information they proved becomes too minimal and a headache to use. On bigger screens they get lost like an island on the screen and adding more creates the same confusion and visually ugly.
Equally organising apps determined by purpose works well for some types but soon loses all logic as you include a wider range of software so the tile interface loses its one asset simple clear starting points. So you end up with lots of conflicting differently sized tiles that don’t let you easily distinguish between purpose or individual applications. However you do get live distractions like silent TVs with subtitles in a bar, and don’t we just love them.

      1. I am typing this on a new Windows 8.1 touchscreen 13″ HP Envy laptop. I cannot imagine this UI working on anything smaller than 11″ It’ was just not thought through. There is no way to put this mess on a 8 or 9″ tablet. I would imagine the same problems that Apple would face if it tried to maul OSX into a small form factor touch device. Windows 8 offers the definitive case study anyone needs as to why Apple has not or will not “merge” their OS’s. It has been a costly mistake for MS and it is only a matter of time before they admit it and give up trying to use the same OS for both touch and desktop.
For MS, the sooner the better.
All Apple has to do its incrementally add functionality to iOS, MS is going to have to start over or modify Windows Phone software.

      2. To be fair, the Win 8 ‘Metro’ interface was never meant to be a comprehensive outlay of ALL apps on the device. It was meant to be a touch interface for ‘shortcuts’ to the Apps that you use often and only shows how disorganized the user is if they have everything up on the metro interface as tiles. The cool thing with the interface is that those same ‘shortcut’ tiles also are able to show data at a glance as people familiar with widget from other OSes will attest. Since they are ‘shortcuts’ you can easily remove them w/o uninstalling the underlying App. This is convenience. Comparing it to iOS where all your apps are on one page or another at the top-level is not the right approach.

      1. More likely, that after an Apple announcement their offering would not stand direct comparison or that it would generate no press attention because it would be seen as a ‘me to’ announcement.

    1. For those people who only use their desktops/laptops for surfing, email, music, occasional documents, Skype, videos, etc. (and that’s a LOT of people), the iPad is an excellent replacement for the desktop/laptop.

      1. Thanks Einstein but I think that fact has already been well established. I own two iPads and know their alternative worth. That’s my point, the device fits the purpose with some overlap. One type of device, mobile or otherwise, need not rule all as needs vary. As a graphics/VFX guy I will always need a desktop solution while using my iPads daily as well. Lovely to have choices.

  2. I can put all fear to rest, if the rumor consists of more than a minor speed bump to an existing product, Tim Cook aint doin’ it… period!

The next iPad will have a useless fingerprint sensor, and Apple will wonder why iPad sales have underperformed.

The next Apple TV will have an unnoticeably “faster” processor, the same with all the Macs, the next iPhone will be slightly bigger than the last (but of course not big enough to compete with the competition, because that’s not what we want, according to Tim Cook).

    In the meantime:

    * Apple hosts gay pride runs.
    * Apple becomes a political advocate for same sex marriage.
    * Apple gets on a soap box for workplace diversity (even though you could die and go to hell trying to find a black person doing anything at Apple, aside from cleaning the place late at night).

Tim Cook is an embarrassment to Apple and everyone that supports the company.

    Apple is dying.

  3. Hmmm…do you think Apple might be talking about a secret product at WWDC?

    …just an iPad Pro?

  4. Sooner or later what goes around comes around. The iPad is simply the best tablet experience on the market. But nothing lasts forever. I certainly don’t think that the Surface Pro 3 has a chance in hell of taking market share away from anyone, but Apple needs to continue to innovate, and seriously folks, innovation has slowed. I’m expecting big things out of WWDC, and if they don’t show up, that’s the time to start worrying.

  5. It is a matter of time and of course market pressures means while MBs continue to sell then there is less pressure to speed the timeline.

We now have the processing power, mature iOS. We need a better multi-tasking multi-window and the ability to accurately point on the screen without having to reach out to the screen. A mouse is a great way of pointing to a screen in front of you instead of on your lap (touch is perfect for a device on ones lap). Remember laptops are often used on a table instead of a desktop computer (as I am right now typing on a MBP).

I think the multi-tasking can easily be enhanced and provide multi-user capabilities at the same time. The mouse concept (whatever it might look like) is simple enough once Apple engineers figure how it should be implemented.

I for one would love to have a larger iPad plus a larger iPhone. I am not sure if an iPadPro can replace my MBP since it drives 2 large high-res screens for a total of 3 screens. Having said that, I would love to have 3 iPadPros synchronized somehow for a true multi-screen system. GO APPLE

  6. Give me a 12″ ipad pro with a super precise
pointing capability ( stylus, etc). And an ios with file management capability , where i can organize and move my files however the hell i want to …..
Port some of the pro software…… FCX, logic pro, adobe photoshop,
    Maya.. Max …etc
And my desktop will be completely abandoned ! (Well 99% )

  7. I’d love a larger iPad. 9.7″ doesn’t cut it sometimes for my aging eyes. Specially since some PIA websites prevent pinch zooming in Safari, whyTF I don’t know..
Anyhow I’m confident Apple will be able to make a large iPad lighter than older iPads.

  8. Time to say again that….
Apple should release a DOBLE SCREEN, TOP “N BOTTOM iPAD !!!
    iDoublePAD ?
Bottom could be used as a keyboard, but could slso do MANY other things– equalizer, color correcter, control panel etc.

  9. “Tablets to eventually replace PCs”? I think а tablet can not replace the desktop PC… Although anything is possible)) Previously, it was hard to imagine that in 2014 we will be able to keep a lot of information on a tiny Apple )))
