Google has published their year-end Zeitgeist which are search queries with the highest amount of traffic over a sustained period in 2012 as compared to 2011.
Apple products dominate Google’s top ten list of consumer electronics (worldwide):
1. iPad 3
2. Samsung Galaxy S3
3. iPad Mini
4. Nexus 7
5. Galaxy Note 2
6. Play Station
7. iPad 4
8. Microsoft Surface
9. Kindle Fire
10. Nokia Lumia 920
In general searches, “iPad 3” came in fourth place worldwide, out-ranking the likes of Kate Middleton, The 2012 Summer Olympics, and even – gasp! – Big Brother Brasil 12:
1. Whitney Houston
2. Gangnam Style
3. Hurricane Sandy
4. iPad 3
5. Diablo 3
6. Kate Middleton
7. Olympics 2012
8. Amanda Todd
9. Michael Clarke Duncan
10. BBB12
Even in Google’s Top 10 Image searches worldwide, Apple came in third:
1. One Direction
2. Selena Gomez
3. iPhone 5
4. Megan Fox
5. Rihanna
6. Justin Bieber
7. Harry Styles
8. Minecraft
9. Nicki Minaj
10. Katy Perry

MacDailyNews Take: Does it strike anyone else as curious that “iPhone 5” was the world’s third most-searched for image (ahead of Megan Fox, Rihanna, and Katy Perry!) and the only consumer electronics device to make that list, yet still failed to show up in Google’s top 10 list of consumer electronics? The Lumia, Surface, and Nexus 7 were each searched for more times than the world’s best-selling smartphone?
Don’t like the numbers? Then, “Cook” the books!
I hate google so much these days.
Would Google manipulate the lists? Duh. But probably the searches for Nexus 7 included the words “Where can I return the … “
good one.
iPhone 5 is certainly the biggest search phrase, so Google obviously has cut it from the list.
Good point. I admit I was counted in the #8 ranking of Microsoft Surface search. But I had typed “Microsoft Surface fails” a few weeks after it came out to see what I’d get to read. So a Microsloth top 10 ranking isn’t necessarily a positive thing.
Google 2003. Bold, smart, clean-living exemplars of science and commerce. Ascendant demigods, they radiate hope from their high Mountain View, caressing Earth itself with benevolent promise.
Google 2013. Meretricious thieves, scoundrels, and betrayers, a poisonous nexus of plotters and spies scurries through the secret chambers of Mountain View, polluting all that once was good.
Nicely done. Thank you.
All that is missing is the snake-headed Schmidt.
Could not agree more, Googles cook the books. How the Hell iPhone 5 did not make the top ten on the tech list is just Mind-boggling. What is even more mind-boggling is that the Samsung Galaxy S3 made the list at #2 and iPhone 5 do not all. How the the top tech product of 2012 not make the list is beyond my comprehension.
Maybe it’s because everyone already knows what an iPhone is and looks like vs. “Surface”, what the heck is a “Surface”?
Seems weird one would type this string ….
Samsung Galaxy S3
Verses Galaxy S3 or Samsung S3 ……
Just saying ……..
Absolutely, these lists are suspect, compared with Yahoo’s which seem unperverted samplings of actual human interest. I suggest these lists are biased because of a combination of complicit SEO poisoning, corrupt back room deals like the old days of radio payola or “incentive” payments to Variety and Photoplay, and inept tinkering with the search and display-ranking algorithms by 21-year-old quants trying to game the social spectrum, using LP to maximize ad revenue subject to the constraint that people dislike ads. Just a wild guess.
god, I love it when you talk that way.
I bet you’d get an erection if she kicked you in the balls too.
at least I have both of mine.
I’m kinda bummed that Minka Kelly isn’t on the list.
But kudos to Apple. The iPad mini search must be attributable to me. Got a bit overexcited there.
Somebody tell Eric Schmidt.
