Apple iPad 2 and iOS 5 AirPlay mirroring (with video)

“During the WWDC keynote, Apple mentioned AirPlay Mirroring in passing, but it is the greatest iOS 5 feature,” Trevor Sheridan reports for AppleNApps.

“You get to stream all of the content on your iPad 2 onto your big screen TV via the Apple TV,” Sheridan reports. “Now you can share every single thing on your iPad 2 screen with no need for apps to have built in AirPlay functionality.”

Sheridan reports, “With the beta software installed on the iPad 2 and Apple TV, it was just a matter of starting AirPlay mirroring from the multi-tasking bar. Then every single action was mirrored in real time on an HDTV. There are 90,000 iPad native apps in the App Store, and they all work with AirPlay Mirroring with no work from the developers. If the developers do a little tweaking they can have their apps display in full HD.”

MacDailyNews Take: We’re sooo glad we blew US$39 each on those Apple Digital AV Adapters (dripping with sarcasm). You really got us with those instant relics, Mr. Jobs.

  1. Hopefully this doesn’t require anymore of a handshake than being on the local network.

So when you visit friends, you can watch movies that you have brought on your iPad.

  2. Does anyone know if the Apple TV has to match the specs of the other iOS device that it is mirroring? For example, if you use an iPad with the A5 processor, will the Apple TV that uses the A4 processor render graphics natively or just play a stream of audio and video from the iPad?

NOT….I took my iPad to my 90+ year old parents home and used the adapter so they could see photos of their great grandchildren, and they will NEVER have an Apple TV. Shame on you MDN for being so short sighted.

  4. Re: MDN Take:

I didn’t buy those $39 cables because I pretty much figured this wireless AirPlay business was coming soon enough. It always does. Some of us don’t rush out to buy things like that, especially if it involves a wire and the tech already existed for something to go wireless.

  5. I use my at work presentations all the time. Good luck trying to convince corporate you need an apple tv to use your iPad for presentations. Plus wifi network access. The MDN comment is short sighted.

    1. I am the head guy at my company and I say buy Apple TV …… and iPads and Airs for everyone ……

And you can bring your pet to work with ya as well ….. Just produce is all I ask, produce …..

  6. while I think it is a great feature, when I tried it with the updated Hulu Plus App it gave me the same error as if I connected it with the 30pin to HDMI adapter. So while it does mirror the display I think it still uses the same API as before. 🙁

  7. Seems to me there’s another great use for Airplay: if it does, in fact, work with Macs, then it will also be possible to (finally) wirelessly stream Flash content on to my HD TV. The one thing iOS can’t do (and for good reason) is play flash, yet most on-line sites who stream video use Flash to do so.

      1. Given that games cost $60 on a console vs a fraction at the app store alone makes it far cheaper.

There is a myriad of other economic reasons why I’m right.

Xbox live is $50ish a year. Sony basically gives all your private info to any hacker with a script. When new gen consoles come to market they’ve been about the cost of an iPad.

Think about next gen iPhones and touches being the controller…

        1. There is a massive used market for games that are cheap, the prices drop as new product ages also. You can also buy similarily prices games on xbox live or nintendos online store. I havent spent over 25 in ages on a game.

There is also a difference in the games, they have made strides on these devices but consoles are still a cut above.

Those are some EXPENSIVE controllers. No analog sticks or real buttons either.

          its a pipe dream dude.

        2. It looks like all the pieces are falling in place for Apple to make dedicated consoles obsolete. Sure, the console hardware will hold its own for a while yet but at the annual rate that Apple updates the iOS device hardware, eventually there will be parity with consoles in graphics capabilities. As for the controller, iOS supports Bluetooth so it is a matter of time before we see a dedicated controller.

Also remember that OnLive will be playable through iPads. With Airport Mirroring and its own controller support, that alone is a viable alternative to any dedicated console.

        3. The same issues as gaming on the pc face the ipad.

Consoles have a long life span, 5 to 10 years. The ipad will be moving to fast. Already we are posting on an article about a feature the ipad1 does not support. Fragmentation is already showing up that will effect developers.

I think the ipad has a future in gaming I just dont see it replacing a desicated console anytime soon.

  8. AWESOME!!
Seeing is believing. This creates all I’ve ever tried to piece together Apple products.
Literally, all I need for perfection now is a MacMini, iPad 2, AppleTV. That is IT! The Mini doesn’t need to be connected to TV. Neither the iPad. This is AWESOME!

    1. Are you seeing this???? A full computer, any TV in the house, all controlled by a portable iPad.

In two years, the computer will be the cloud and the appleTV will be inside the TV. Do you see it??

  9. You are travelling and stay in a hotel room with a flat screen TV and accessible HDMI port (W hotels have these). You don’t have your Apple TV, but you have your iPad 2 and Wifi in the room along with an Appple HDMI adapter and 6′ HDMI cable. You change the TV to use the open HDMI port. Every app is mirrored to the screen and you initiate Facetime and see your family on the big screen….this all works now with the HDMI adapter. Wifi mirroring would work but you would need to pack the ATV2 as well.

  10. If iOS5 runs sluggishly on iPad 1 do I even want to install it? I’m really disappointed that Apple is so quickly essentially orphaning the original iPad. The hardware is just too significant an investment to upgrade to the new, improved model every few months. One of the things I have always appreciated about Apple is that their computers’ longevity is excellent. I have a three year old MacBook that has breezed through several OS updates and still runs great with Lion. This iPad desertion is disheartening to say the least. Next iOS update, will I need an iPad 3 to utilize it.? Sorry, I can’t afford to plunk out $700-800 every time Apple upgrades iOS…Gotta be the most pricey update ever!!!

  11. Im going to use an AppleTV 2 in my car, HDMI to RCA converter .. to the headrest and ceiling flip down monitors. No more DVDs. Stream movies from my Iphone or my Ipad to the AppleTV2 and to the video screens.
