BMW Apps displays iPhone apps in your BMW’s display (with video)

At BMW, the line between electrifying performance and high-performance electronics is blurring. Starting with models produced in March 2011, BMW owners will be the very first to experience a unique connection between their BMW and their Apple iPhone.

BMW Apps is a unique interface that allows a iOS 4.x devices to play apps specifically modified for BMW. Imagine listening to Web Radio while you drive – or accessing your Twitter or Facebook accounts in the Display monitor. According to BMW, additional apps will be quickly developed and rolled out.

The Web radio function lets you search for stations by name, location, or genre, as well as store favorites, finds similar stations, and change audio quality. With the Apple iPod Out function, you can select music tracks, compile playlists, and use Genius (if enabled) to find similar sounds – anything your iPod can do, your BMW can, too. And when your vehicle is stopped, you can even watch videos and podcasts stored on your iPhone.

BMW Apps is part of BMW ConnectedDrive – more info here.

      1. I was actually hoping to have stated that in a neutral manner, without implying an opinion either way.

I think there are actually pluses and minuses – for example it would have been nice to have the access to Internet Radio stations, as well as simplified access to iPod functionality and control, in terms of audio playback.

  1. While the technology sounds great-it will provide another huge and Dangerous driver distraction; as drivers will look at posts on social networks, read themand respond to them.

  2. Have a 330xi, but it’s 10 years old now with 190k miles. I’m not really planning on another BMW. Maybe a MINI Countryman. The Peripheral Electronics adapter I got plugs into the CD changer plug and allows me to control my iPhone 4 just fine. The only advantage to this seems to be it’s Airplay compatible.

  3. I just bought the 2011 BMW 135i with M Sport pack… ain’t no special integration that I can see. just a mini stereo jack with a USB under the arm rest. that can’t be it… or can it?!? du, duh, duuuuh!

    1. The BMW Interface is only available on BMW’s built March 2011 & later…… But what you’re referring to is located deep in a crevice on he left side of you Glove Box. Now, to download music directly into your car, you need to put any music you want to be stored in your BMW on a “Jump Drive” & then plug the Jump Drive into the USB Port in your glove box.

  4. I wish/hope that Audi will offer the same integration. Its great that they have an iPhone car charger, bluetooth, and iPod integration in my Q5, but I find that I can’t use all the functions on my iPod (ie Genius playlists).

  5. BMW used to make some great cars, but has become nothing more than an overpriced aspirational brand that delivers yesterday’s technology at stratospheric prices.
If you ever wanted Pontiac meets Hyundai styling at Porsche prices- BMW is your car.

  6. From watching the video I would guestimate that this is:
    1) Bluetooth technology
    2) Running through specific BMW apps on the iPhone
    3) Controlled special hardware controls in the car.

If that is the case then all of the functionality is within any particular BMW app. Therefore, whether you smash up your BMW due to being distracted texting to Facebook is up to BMW. It is entirely possible that BMW would limit the user to only specific features, such as music only, while the car is in gear, hopefully limiting the number of fatalities.
    😉

  7. Where do these kids get their money from. I had to work my butt off for years to afford a BMW.

YOU KNOW THERE ARE OLDER EOPLE OWNING THESE CARS TOO. Must be their parents money. BMW MUST GIVE OUT YAT YOUNG IMAGE I GUESS.
