Dave Gilson reports for Mother Jones, “The folks over at Big Think have just posted a recent interview with President Jimmy Carter.” An excerpt:
We’ve become increasingly addicted to consumption of goods that we don’t produce ourselves, and a lot of the manufacturing has gone overseas… I have an iPad and also an iPod, both of which are made in China. Although we have designed them here with Apple, for instance, they are manufactured overseas.

Reagan’s fans give him credit for restoring the nation’s prosperity. But whatever economic growth occurred during the Reagan years only benefited those already well off. The income gap between the rich and everyone else in America widened. Wages for the average worker declined and the nation’s homeownership rate fell. During Reagan’s two terms in the White House, which were boon times for the rich, the poverty rate in cities grew.
Mr. Reagan is often credited with having caused the collapse of the Soviet Union, but this is doubtful. He did use the Cold War as a pretext for other interventions, including funding and support for horrific violence against the civilian population of Central America. In 1999 the United Nations determined that the massacres of tens of thousands of Guatemalans, mostly indigenous people, constituted “genocide.” These massacres — often involving grotesque torture — reached their peak under the rule of Mr. Reagan’s ally, the Guatemalan General Rios Montt. Tens of thousands of Salvadorans were also murdered during Mr. Reagan’s presidency by death squads affiliated with the U.S.-funded Salvadoran military.
But it was Mr. Reagan’s efforts to overthrow the government — democratically elected in 1984 — of poor, underdeveloped Nicaragua that almost brought down his presidency. Congress cut off aid to Mr. Reagan’s proxy army, the Contras, as a result of pressure from Americans — led by religious groups — who were disgusted by the Contras’ tactics of murdering unarmed teachers and health care workers.
The Reagan administration continued to run the war from the basement of the White House, and paid for part of it with the proceeds of illegal arms sales to Iran. Hence the Iran-Contra scandal, in which Mr. Reagan escaped prosecution because his subordinates claimed that he had no knowledge of their crimes.
The Reagan revolution continues today: the “war on terror” has replaced the Cold War as pretext for intervention abroad, including the disastrous war in Iraq. Tax cuts for the rich and huge increases in military spending have revived the era of giant budget deficits. As the Great Communicator used to say, “There they go again.”

Corporate taxes aren’t the issue. Chinese workers are paid a tiny fraction of US workers’ wages. Factor in unionized labor and the disparity is off the charts.
The kind folk who run multi-national corporations wouldn’t get their multi-million dollar paychecks if they had to pay a living wage to third-world laborers on par with wages in the US and Western Europe.
Don’t worry, the US government and it’s corporate masters are hard at work transforming the US into banana republic like the ones we created and prop up in Central America. So, someday we too will be able to work for Chinese (and Malaysian and Vietnamese and, and, and…) labor rates, while the 2% at the top own and control everything else.

The positives and negatives of today are a result of a hundred years of decisions – decisions by Presidents, congressmen, courts, local governments, and finally we the people – for better or worse. Start to take ownership and responsibility for some of it. Start to see a way forward. Start to remember the basic principles of living in a community, along with the morals and ethics required (social contract?). Heck, just get to know your neighbors. Lend a hand if you can (shoveling snow, etc). Do something for someone where the benefit is not going to you. Learn to appreciate the value of work and education and purpose.
A great deal of the problems we face are because we as a society were greedy. Bigger houses. Bigger cars, bigger toys, bigger bank accounts, bigger vacations, bigger weddings. The media has not helped either, nor has professional sports, or big business, and so forth.
The rest of the world has lost respect for us because we have lost our self-respect.
Oh, and bring some real jobs back to the US. Stop being worried about tariffs and lets start protecting the jobs we have here before they get shipped overseas. Penalize companies that produce more than 20% of their goods overseas with a tax (or something). Stop giving tax credits and other benefits to all these profit seeking leeches. Dismantle the government and all the bureaucracy around it piece by piece using the latest and greatest minds, and then rebuild it leaner and meaner, with the best and the brightest. Hire consultants from accounting firms, etc to get rid of the waste. Then chart a 20 year course, a plan. Eliminate career politicians from office. The founding fathers knew that the career politician was a source of corruption, and we all know it too. I don’t care how beloved your senator or representative is, right now, they are stealing money from our families, and our children. And let’s make our education system simply the best in the world. Let’s not be afraid to educate some ethics and morals and culture – all this political correctness is just bullshit.
Yeah, certain things seem to be working you say – why change it? Well, it’s like driving a worn out car. The windows work, but only on the driver’s side. The brakes work, but only when it’s over 76 degrees outside. The headlights turn on and off depending on where the steering wheel is. Once in a while you get lucky and the car gets you there and you don’t notice any of the problems. Then when you try to go somewhere else, it leaves you stranded.

Your criticism of Keynesian economics shows you do not understand Keynesian economics. Under classical economics, aka supply-side economics, recessions are periods of high inflation and low consumer demand with associated reductions in business investment. The imagined cure was that since consumers were spending less that their pooling savings would increase the amount of available community investment capital thereby bringing down inflation (the price of money) and thereby resulting in more business investment and growth.
Keynes pointed out, when things were not improving on their own during the Great Depression, that if people are not working then there is no money being pooled into savings when demand falls off; thus, during high unemployment there is no supply side counter mechanism to bring down inflation to spur business investment – a stalemate arises.
Keynes said you had to get people demanding goods to spur business investment (demand-side economics) and that the only entity capable of breaking the business sector/consumer sector stalemate was the government sector; thus government had to become the employer of last resort or it should prioritize deficit spending in the short run to get more money into consumer hands to spur demand and drive business investment.
Unfortunately today inflation is not the issue; interest rates could hardly get lower. (Large) business are also not hurting; they made record profits (and Wall Street is once again handing out record bonuses). The problem is that many industries in the US have matured and the only way for them to increase profit is to shed ever more labor, to ship jobs overseas and/or to continue to buy each other out, thus further reducing the number of employers who create jobs. Deficit spending may only help us tread water at this point but cutting back on still more government services (fewer teachers, fewer cops, etc.) also means correspondingly less consumer demand and fewer tax receipts to fund what government jobs we still have; thus a continuing downward spiral without it.
The only way out is disgorgement of hoarders of unproductive capital (taxing the rich) to pay off the debt and to use that money to invest in the development of new, young businesses (clean energy, etc). That’s the only way to create jobs to get consumer demand going and to bring back the deflated housing market. Lowering taxes will not do it. Taxes are the lowest in 60 years and the unfunded tax cuts of the Bush era resulted in next to zero job growth during his presidency. Corperations
(continue of “hey, dude”) … Corporations are flushed with cash but the status quo of mature industries is still very profitable so that’s why, say, the oil industry drags it’s feet investing in alternatives. Plus other non job creating industries like derivative trading is crazy profitable, so why use that capital to build a job creating factory, as the thinking goes.

The greatest transfer of wealth to the rich
and the destruction of a viable middle class
started in 1980 and is ongoing.
Some of you need a lesson in objective realities.
Carter’s single term yielded a 9.0% growth in GDP (adjusted for inflation) and a 0.4% reduction (same basis) in Federal Debt. In fact, the Peanut Farmer every troglodyte likes to hate left office with debt at a mere 32.5% of US GDP, which is as low as it has been since the end of World War II.
Also, Carter’s term created more relative growth in employment in a single term (average per year) than any President since (+3.1%/year). The only terms to get even close to that since were Reagan II (+2.7%) and Clinton I (+2.6%). Neither GHW Bush nor GW Bush were able to deliver more than +0.8% average growth in employment in their terms.
On the subject of debt, until Reagan I, the debt/GDP ratio fell under every Presidential term except the Nixon/Ford term: Reagan’s two terms saw Federal debt increase by 110% (inflation-adjusted) – fuelled by military spending and tax cuts – whilst GDP only increased by around 28.9%.
If you annex the unspectacular performance that followed (GHW Bush) into account, you can see the genesis of the US debt crisis: a 180% increase in Federal debt compared to the end of the Carter administration with only a 37.2% growth in GDP. So much for trickle-down economics.
It’s fascinating that people (normally with nothing other than dogma at their disposal) like to equate low taxes with economic growth: Clinton delivered a 30.4% growth in GDP and 26 million new jobs (around 24%) whilst only increasing Federal debt by 13%.
Despite the Bush 43 tax cuts (which continued the Reaganomics doctrine), the GW Bush admin managed to grow GDP by only 20.6% (in reality, no better than the trend delivered by Carter) and employment by 6.1 million (4.5% to be generous) at the cost of increasing Federal debt by 45%: again, even during the Korean and Vietnam wars, the US paid down its debts which highlights the stupidity of decreasing tax rates (based on ideology rather than sound economic reasoning) whilst the military is in operation in TWO separate conflicts.
The troglodytes can call me whatever names they like, but these are facts and simply calling me a Commie or a libtard or mentally ill will change them. In fact, unreasoned insults whilst simultaneously failing to acknowledge statistical and factual reality probably says more about the people doing the insulting than it does about my analysis which is based on public records.
