Analyst: Apple iPhone initial availability may be limited

“Apple Inc. plans to start selling the iPhone June 29, as the company prepares to challenge Nokia Oyj and Motorola Inc. with the new combination mobile phone and iPod music player,” Adam Satariano and Connie Guglielmo report for Bloomberg.

“The release date was announced in three advertisements posted on Apple’s Web site yesterday,” Satariano and Connie Guglielmo report.

“Apple has shipped more than 100 million iPods since Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs introduced the player in 2001. He’s seeking to parlay that popularity into sales of the iPhone, setting a goal of 10 million units sold in 2008,” Satariano and Connie Guglielmo report.

MacDailyNews Note: Apple’s actual goal is 10 million units by end of 2008, starting June 29, 2007.

Satariano and Connie Guglielmo continue, “Availability may be ‘limited,’ which could build ‘buzz’ for the product, J.P. Morgan Securities Inc. analyst Bill Shope said in a report today.”

“‘Users may put off iPod purchases for the iPhone, but they may have to deal with a long wait,’ Shope said. He also said Apple will ‘need to go beyond just buzz’ to justify the phone’s price and two-year contract for consumers. JP Morgan is keeping its ‘neutral’ rating on the shares, he said,” Satariano and Guglielmo report.

“Shares of Apple, which also makes the Macintosh computer, …have risen 39 percent since Jobs announced the iPhone on Jan. 9. Apple’s market capitalization topped $100 billion for the first time last week,” Satariano and Guglielmo report. “Of the analysts who follow Apple shares, 23 rate them ‘buy,’ four have ‘hold’ ratings, and none advise selling, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.”

  1. Hey, I think you should SELL Apple as soon as possible. Remember that analysist that left for the east? She said Apple would tank and crash!!!! And that was only $ 25 dollars ago.

    She must be right!! LOL Yep, Apple will never see $100 —- again ——- er….. unless it splits. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  2. “setting a goal of 10 million units sold in 2008”

Isn’t it just amazing how many times the same misinformation gets repeated over and over again? If I was this sloppy in my line of work, I would have killed many patients by now and would be barred from practice!

  3. Of course it will be limited. Apple absolutely cannot make deadlines or meet the basic needs of consumers anymore. The demand is the same now as when it was announced. In fact, I think it’s less. It’s just salt added to the wounds of endless waiting and disappointment. It will be the Wii all over again with legions of peeved, irritated consumers.

  4. “The demand is the same now as when it was announced.”

Now that’s gotta be the best evidence of being an MS astroturfer I’ve ever read.

iMaki/savethewhales/whateveryourhandleis – give it up, you’re tired old diatribe is wasted on this site.

MDN word is “was”, as in iMaki is soooo WAS.

  5. > Apple’s actual goal is 10 million units by end of 2008, starting June 29, 2007.

Why does MDN keep repeating this “incorrect correction”? Just go listen to the last 3 minutes of the Jobs keynote from MacWorld 2007. He says the goal is 10 million units IN 2008, “the first full year in the market.” It IS NOT “by the end of 2008” starting in June 2007.

PLEASE, just go listen to it now. It’s available in iTunes as a podcast or here

You don’t need to play the whole thing, just the last three minutes.

  6. Yes, Wii customers are so angry, they’re throwing money at Nintendo. Apple should be so unfortunate. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”rolleyes” style=”border:0;” />

MDN “human” as in, “Shut up, iMaki.”

  7. “they may have to deal with a long wait,’ Shope said. He also said Apple will ‘need to go beyond just buzz’ to justify the phone’s price”

How can both be true? Either there will be people waiting in line to buy one, or demand will be low enough that Apple needs to adjust the price (highly unlikely) but not both.

  8. funny how these so called analysts talk crap on the high price of the iphone. i remember people coming into my cingular store when the razr came out and purchased it outright without contract. that was some $700. last i checked the iphone has a couple more features than the razr.

  9. I am wavering on an iPhone purchase. It just seems that when I first saw it, I was mesmerized. Then I started to wonder what use was the iPhone beyond using Craigslist and Google maps to find hookers easily…uh…then I realized that was worth the price of admission.

  10. “Did he say the ‘Macintosh Computer’? I kinda miss that. This ‘Mac’ stuff is a little too dull for me.”

Actually, I’m fine with it–in the consumer realm. iMac, Mac mini–cute and cuddly.

However, it shouldn’t be a “Mac Pro.” It should be a “Macintosh Pro.”

  11. Yep, “Cheese”!

I, too, am sick and tired of the “sky/Mac-is-falling” iMaki. That guy ought to take some happy pills and find some sunshine in his life.

Perhaps backing John McCain’s run for the White House would do the trick. After all, with MonkeyBoy Ballmer running the technology end of the things, the USA would be teetering on the verge of an iMaki paradise.

  12. @ Jack

‘May’ is the word that people use when they want to write an article with no facts that says nothing.

Apple may have a difficult road ahead…
The iPod’s success may not transfer to the iPhone…
Apple’s shine may be wearing off…
Jobs and Co. may be in for a rude awakening…

    Collect them all!!!

At 1:16:45 on Mr. Jobs says,

“1% market share equals 10 million units. This is a giant market… This is exactly what we’re going to try to do in 2008 our first full year in the market.”

On the one hand, MDN is right that the number is calibrated at the end of 2008. But, though I remembered it differently, it’s clear that “1 Billion” is cell phones per year, and so, 1%, keeping units equal, is 10 million per year.

I’d have to agree with you that Mr. Jobs does obviously mean 10 million iPhones in the calendar year, 2008, not beginning this month.

    Well done.

  14. Look! I can do it too!

“The sky is a decided shade of blue! Grass, it would seem, is green!”

God, I want to be an analyst in my spare time. Who knows, I might then be able to afford the iPhone ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  15. Well, I certainly hope there is a backlog.
This is a new product, like the Wii.

If Apple is doing their job correctly there should be short supply.

Can you think of the additional FUD that would be written:
“Apple made 8 million units and sold only 7 million in one month, what a failure, they didn’t sell thru on what they made.”

I for one want the iPhone to be oversold.
I’d like all those nay sayers to eat their words.

By the way, iMaki ias probably a M$ flunky.
Apple said they would ship in June and they are shipping in June – I guess M$ and their so called partners are really shaking in their boots, they tried to generate FUD when the iPhone was initially unveiled. It didn’t work, so they are trying really hard against the tide with less than 30 days to go.

Too bad iMaki, I hope you lose your shirt shorting Apple.
