“If you want to know what the next iPod will look like, go to Apple.com and watch the demo for the coming iPhone,” Eric Benderoff writes for The Chicago Tribune.
Benderoff writes, “Since Steve Jobs earlier this month introduced the iPhone, which goes on sale in June from Cingular Wireless, much has been said and written about how revolutionary it will be. That’s all well and good, but one aspect has been overlooked: How will this impact the iPod?”
“The answer is, quite a bit,” Benderoff writes. “Already, Apple executives are calling the iPhone the best iPod the company has built. Do you think all that really cool technology, particularly the touch screen, only will be used on a phone that starts at $500?”
Benderoff writes, “Hardly. Put me on the record as saying you’ll see a touch-screen iPod this fall, a few months after the buzz of the iPhone launch settles and a few months before the key holiday sales season kicks in.”
“Apple cares about being an innovator, as well as protecting its bread-and-butter product line, so it would behoove Jobs to include iPhone’s nifty new features in his top-of-the-line video-playing iPod,” Benderoff writes. “Before introducing the iPhone, speculation was rampant that Apple was working on a wide-screen version of the iPod, with touch controls. The speculation was right, but the product was wrong: That’s what the iPhone looks like. But so will the next iPod. And I would expect a bigger screen that will be sharper than the iPhone.”

hopefully soon
> When will Apple’s 6G widescreen multi-touch iPod debut?
The obvious: Tonight!
Zune Tang is doomed!
ooh article link is down…
I hope the rumours of the new iPod are true. It would hold me over until the iphone’s released here.
Why would Apple wait so long? Everyone knows what the new iPod will look like and that includes the competition. Apple needs to get this out soon so as not to allow others 7 months to beat them to the punch.
Seems to me that it could just as easily be launched successfully well in advance of the phone.
Yea Yea Yea Yellow Submarine iPod Beatle Songs on limeted Widescrene iPod will sell Millions before Superbowl game is over tonight! All Babybomers will go nuts! Apple will get millions of these widescreen iPods out into the market and will be huge exposure for the up comming iPhone release iPhone then will be able to sell 20 Million this year Yea Yea Yea
Look for an April release. This is the grads, dads and moms quarter. It ranks right behind back to school and Christmas as reasons to buy someone else a gift.
I think guy has it about right. Unfortunately it’s means Apple’s going to take a bath on iPod sales until then, but the FCC licensing thing really made them let the cat out of the bag a lot earlier than they would normally like.
This is the probable cause of Apple’s revenue warnings for the next quarter in their recent financial report.
However, there should be considerable back demand pumped up by then, and Apple could make it all back in the 4th quarter.
They just have to be able to make the damn things in big enough quantities.
Gaaaahhh!
“I think that THIS guy has it about right…”
MW: ‘many’ as in
“Many are the speeling errors…”

Is that iBread and Apple butter?
Watch the Apple commercial during the Superbowl.
It’s the Beatle’s alright…on a touchscreen ipod
Oh !@#$%…
Apple BETTER NOT! But as like as I still have my doubts…
Just wait until the superior Zune Phone debuts by the end of this year. It will blow (NOT squirt) all of CrApple’s petty products out of the water! Score another one for Microsoft.
Your potential. Our passion.
Sound a bit jealous there, eh Tang?
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
The Tang must die.
I found Zune Tang, or a close relative, pushing the Zune
Mmmmmm…. iBread. Apple butter.
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue rolleye” style=”border:0;” />
My credit card is hungry and waiting.
UK Fanboy’s got it right. S,he would buy a touchscreen iPod tomorrow to tide them over until June. I would bet millions are in the same category.
Release it soon!
Tonight? Not likely.
The screen will be larger. A 4″ screen to be exact. The screen is a variant of the iPhone screen, but will be much closer to a true 16:9 ratio (albiet missing it by just a tad).
But the lenth will be slightly shorter than the iPhone, as it has no proximaty sensor, mic, speaker or camera like the iPhone does.
40 GB and 100 GB hard drives. WiFi? Probably not… Next 6.5G iPod, probably so.
Honestly, I’m thinking they’ll make it a Multi-Touch widescreen iPod with an onscreen click wheel. Aka, it </b>won’t</b> be exactly like the iPhone, other than the fact that it is a touch screen and widescreen, but will be essentially the same thing.
The iPhone really gives off some significant iPod vibes; The handset/headphone jack, “wake/sleep” switch, and the dock connector (which is more about keeping standards than about just iPod- for which I applaud anyway).
I’m thinking a 30/40 GB model for $299 and an 80/100 GB model for $399. There will definitely be a special event for this, not some lame commercial.
As for the Beatles, what have they EVER done for Apple? I’m sorry, but creating a shatload of legal troubles and whining about online music for years does not scream the words “exclusive iPod” to me.
To further Steven’s idea regarding the size of the iPod, I feel like they might not break the form factor that the iPod has had since 2001.
Superbowl add …..its going to be a award winning add…..all the news shows will replay it ….at the end of the add its going to say …. oh!!! …. “ONE MORE THING..Feb 15 2007” Then All the media can hipe it for 10 Days Free….. way to go Steve
Remember . at the end of the last Key Note??? . There was not the one more thing
Shut up you old analytical geezers! Whatever happened to senseless fun?
Scratchs and finger prints anyone?
What’s with the Superbowl ad talk? There’s like two or three people that checked the list of companies running Superbowl commercials and Apple wasn’t even on it.
Personally, I plan on buying a widescreen mutli-touch iPod as soon as it’s released, as well as an iPhone. They’re really completely seperate devices. An iPhone is lots of stuff, plus a Nano, but 8 gigs isn’t going to give you that much video, especially if you want music on there to. Maybe I’m the only person out there who will buy both, I doubt it. I bet lots of people will, and there’ll also be lots of people who JUST want the video iPod. There’s no reason not to release the full video iPod ASAP, in my opinion.
