Margaret Kane writes for CNET News, “The recent confirmation from Apple Computer that it’s planning to redesign the iMac prompted CNET News.com to wonder: So what will it look like? And who better to ask than our readers?”

MacDailyNews Take: Here we go with the iMac G5 speculation season. Enjoy! One hint from us: if the new iMac G5 doesn’t accept, somehow interact with, or include a built-in VESA Mount Adapter, we’ll switch to Windows XP (just kidding). You heard it here first.
All in one flat screen.
Well let’s face it. The iMacs have been getting smaller and small – as most personal computers have been. And since, clearly, we can’t have an infinitely small computer (at least not yet) – the next logical step would be to make it invisible. Like the last bond car.

Hopefully the Apple legal department will not require MDN to remove this image.
someone had the balls to mention that apple should spend more money on quality? oy. i have never used a machine of any kind that goes through the abuse of my computer (dual 2ghz G5 running Maya, Shake, FCP HD, 4 GIG RAM, dual 20″ cinema displays), that takes it in stride and impresses me daily. Can’t say the same thing of any other computer, and especially those morons building cars in Detroit. (acura driver, here!)
The CPU will be about 3 inches high by 14 inches wide and 10 inches deep. There will be a LCD screen that will mount on the CPU or you’ll be able to use your current one (LCD) with an adapter. YES, the iMac goes two piece!
sorry, had to dig at American car quality, i often compared my previous dodge ram 2500 truck to a dell.
I rekon it with have an ipod connector/dock built-in and therefore just plug your ipod in and auto sync – no cables!
I also think the price should be around 499 for the bottom line model going up to 1,100 for the top model and that Apple should throw in 100 songs itunes certificate with all new models (and maybe 99 off a new 40gb ipod).
“And who better to ask than our readers?”
Oh Margaret, sweetie. I wouldn’t even ask your readers to walk my poodles – let alone trust them to come up with an iMac design.
AS SEEN ON TV, the new iMac will sport a BikiniTouch.
Hey MDN what’s with that banner? couldn’t get any Computer related advertizing? what’s next, X-rated sites?
Personally, i would not mind. but since i am surfing from work, i kinda have to think twice about surfing over to MDN.
I think it will carry a LOT of design references to the iPod – after all, this will be the focal ‘switching’ machine for all those millions of Wintel ‘podders’ who’ve recently discovered the wonders of Apple. Perhaps simply an enlarged ‘landscape’ iPod shape (white surface) with an LCD screen filling out one side and a brushed metal stand centred on the other?
Maybe even an iPod click wheel built into the keyboard (they’re very proud of that one!)?
>AS SEEN ON TV, the new iMac will sport a BikiniTouch
Very funny Me. I don’t think we get the BikiniTouch banner here in UK (sadly).
BUT… up until very recently there was a well known hair removal product here – aimed at all those bikini lines – called ‘Immac’. This pre-dated Apple’s cuddly computer by decades – though recently it’s changed its name to ‘Veet’ Depilatory Cream (!)
iVeet anyone?
I agree about the seamless integration of the iPod and iMac. I think that Apple needs to find cool new features that the windows iPod users just can’t have. For example, what if the iPod once docked to the iMac becomes context sensitive. If you’re browsing in Safari, you could scroll the page with the iPod wheel. In iMovie, scroll through the footage precisely, etc…
make the iPod the perfect bait to lure windows user to the iMac.
new imac: flat and late.
“Apple needs to compete. Enough of this laid back, whatever type attitude. If they are going to remain a computer company (Which I’m starting to question what with Apple seriously focusing on Music and the iPod.) they need to kick some butt,” writes a reader identified as John Doe.
We’re supposed to take seriously what “John Doe” says? Bwahahaha!
Why do these PC writers even care what Apple’s doing? Who cares what they think?
Hmmmm. Could this VESA mount adaptor be the beginning of iMacs offered without a display?????
Hope it has optional displays; but I doubt it. I say look for a power supply and port base for a screen with motherboard behind and a DVDR drive on the edge supported from a single arm. I would like options for a video card and 1 exp. slot with two drive bays. Again, I think it’s not likely. Give me a mini box with features and chip alternatives that span the price range below the current G5s. Oh well, maybe next year.

Actually, nobody outside of Apple knows what it will look like except the folks at Quanta who are manufacturing the iMacs. Supposedly pre-production models are being made to send to Paris with full ramp up in a few weeks. I think we’ll all be surpised by the form factor…. a good guess since it’s happened ever since the first iMac.
I do not think that an iPod dock will be part of the new iMac because all iPods are different. The iPod Mini for example cannot use the same dock as the 20 GB iPod which cannot in turn use the same dock as the 40 GB dock. So long as there is FireWire on the iMac there will not be a need for a built-in dock.
The new iMac will be 3D!!!
It’ll have an open box as a screen. You get up, lean forward and stick your whole head inside to look around, resting your chin in the VESA mount while protecting your rear from surprise intrusions with your free hand.
SuperDrive access is from inside the screen — look ma, no hands! — insert or retrieve a disk with your teeth.
The rest will be the usual Apple form factor — ultra compact … very tight … so tight, in fact, that RAM cards plug in externally and literally just hang their ass out.
The Apple logo will be a cutout — look through it to admire the G5 chip subtly lit by two LEDs. The LEDs will be colored pink, blue green or white — your choice — not gold.
No fan … the chip rotates on an assymetrical axis, blowing air out through the logo cutout so you can catch a whiff of silicon, thus warning you of an impending meltdown.
It will come with blueteeth inside the screen box. If you post a complaint about Shanghai artifacts in your 4G iPod’s casing on any public site, the teeth will clamp down on your neck, biting your head off.
Visit a Thurrot site and the SuperDrive will momentarily slip the disk out and back in (sort of like sticking its tongue out). A silencer algorithm will be trigered if you are Thurrot — the disk spits out with enough force to sever your windpipe.
Finally, it will come with a manual — a postcard, telling you where the on/off button is.
Oh … and one last thing. It WILL play REAL aac’s. But the sound output will invariably be inaggadadavida.
The iMac G5 will have a revolutionary touchscreen!
That would be cool…
ROFL!!! But, what about the price?
>>OFL!!! But, what about the price?
The BikiniTouch is only $14.99.
The price is the best part — $999 for one; 2 for $999 [the market share thing, you know] plus bundling specials: $9.99 for Microshaft Orifice [plastic chair and desk] and $0.99 for Internet Expleter — the XV version. But wait, there’s more … trade in any Dell product and get a rebate of $5.00 for one or $ 2.50 each for two — limit two per customer. Offer excludes the Dell DJ — “we can’t give that shit away.”
This is really pissing me off. Apple stopped selling iMacs, and said they will have new design in Sept. Why don’t they show us all NOW what the new G5 iMac will look like? This will not kill current iMac sales BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT SELLING THEM ANYMORE ANYWAY!!!
Why haven’t we seen a combo desktop/laptop? A flatscreen you can unplug and walk away with as a superlightweight (no superdrive, smaller feature set) laptop or tablet and bring home to use as a fully featured desktop. Not such a weird idea these days…
My logical conclusion is that iMac will again be 2 year old technology thats all in one and customers will be scratching their heads saying what the hell is Apple doing. that all in one stuff is crap and is why 95% of the world buys Pc;s or Powermacs. all in ones suck the wad. i wonder if Apple learned the lessons with the failure known as iMac lcd. it was pretty but still a pretty failure in sales terms. come on apple stop being stupid and make a mini consumer tower. save your art classes for your kids.

Why would you bother with that? Powerbook 12″ is as compact and “superlightweight” as I could ever need, then at home plug it into a 21″ CRT (or huge overpriced LCD if that’s your thing), add a keyboard and mouse if you want. And it would cost you half as much as some sort of funky hybrid.
Spock, I am the millionaire, you aren’t. I have been designing computers for 30 years, you haven’t. I know what you need, you don’t. Just buy what I produce and ignore the jeers of the pc crowd, you will live long and prosper.
We spend a lot of time making sure that macs cannot be mistaken for a dumb pc box. LOTS
Mr. Steve Jobs.
I find it highly illogical for Spock to us the phrase “suck the wad.”
Analysis, Bones?
>Why haven’t we seen a combo desktop/laptop?
Yes, grab a super toshiba 15″ (bad Powerbook imitation) 18 lb wieght, with XP: neither laptop, nor desktop.
thinkdifferent: the best benefit of the “pizza box” everything-behind-the-screen-hang-on-the-wall design will be for the day keyboards are passe’ because voice recognition / voice recitation software works well enough to become standard issue. Why sit infront of your computer reading your email when your computer can read it to you while you’re working on another task? Save the screen for graphics instead of text. “One day” . . . one day may be sooner than we think – Jobs sure knows how to keep a secret and how long have his miracle-workers had to work on something that revolutionary??? And an ipod that could serve as the mic/speakers with a little wireless wizardry attachment so you could dictate from anywhere in the house. . . . .welcome to the future???
You’re on drugs, memelvin, the keyboard won’t go away. Who wants their email read so that another one can hear it? Who wants to constantly talk to a screen? You’ll need bottled water next to it to keep your throat moist. Oh there are uses for speech to text and viceversa technology — limited uses; niches — that’s all.
I wish I could get paid to write for CNET. Simply cut and paste a bunch of quotes off of rumor sites and then cash my paycheck. I found this artical useless.
Judging from the volume of interest here and elsewhere, speculation as to the G5 iMac’s appearance and features seems set to explode as August rolls along.
Timing for a new iMac seems good. The past two months for PC users has been an object lesson is just how vulnerable, slow and stupid their machines can become due to trojans, worms and viruses. I know, because I’m still on one, just waiting for the G5 iMac to make the switch. I shall never look back.
If the marketing folks at Apple don’t tout the inherent value of their integrated security better, they’ll be missing an opportunity.

You have it all wrong. Billie produces viruses to screw people’s PC’s. Billie produces antiviruses to make more money. Billie is a d!kc.
APPLE, on the other hand, makes antiviruses so that morons who introduce pc documents into an apple can protect themselves against these corrupted files. APPLE doesn’t produce viruses. APPLE doesn’t screw their customers.
CONCLUSION: APPLE consumers live in a virus-free world!
