Apple’s first folding smartphone, the iPhone Duo, sold out instantly when preorders opened Friday, with delivery estimates quickly slipping into January 2027 for every configuration. Bloomberg News‘ Mark Gurman reported that shipping timelines moved into early next year within minutes of the preorder window opening, underscoring both intense demand and tight initial supply for the $1,999 device.

The iPhone Duo, available in multiple colors and storage options ranging from 256 gigabytes to 2 terabytes, is scheduled for release on October 23rd. However, the rapid sell-through means many customers who reserved preferred colors and storage sizes still face multi-month waits, making it difficult to secure the foldable phone on or shortly after launch day. All variants were affected by the delays.

The preorder frenzy highlights the strong consumer interest in Apple’s entry into the foldable category, even at a premium price point. Social media users noted the sudden shift in availability, with some describing the experience of watching delivery dates move out in real time after attempting to complete orders.

Apple has not publicly commented on the supply situation or production volumes for the iPhone Duo. The constrained availability at launch is consistent with the challenges of introducing a complex new form factor, as demand outpaced the company’s initial allocation of units.

  1. I’m surprising my girlfriend with a Duo.

I was online before 4:45am PST and had to wait until 5:10am before Apple let me in. A couple of days ago, when I read that Apple would let you ready your basket, I prepared that pre-order at the Education Store. When finally allowed access to the Store this morning, it was gone. Apple asked me to log in to my account, then locked it, and forced me through an unlock process (as I had to when I filled my basket earlier in the week).

Starting from scratch, I filled the basket, added the trade-in, chose Apple Card 0% financing, Verizon as the carrier, and somehow got it ordered and out by around 5:15am.

Delivers: Dec 1 – Dec 8 by Express Delivery.

The things we do for love…

  2. I ordered my wife’s through AT&T via their app. I had it all ready to go, in the cart, trade-in info all set the night before. Went in today, the 16th, and it basically reset everything. I wanted to get this ordered for her, so I swallowed the rage and reentered all the info got to the end, and chose ApplePay for the payment type, … it didn’t process the payment. So, I go back to the beginning thinking something must have gone awry. And, it started me all over again! This time, my cart from the evening prior populated, and at the end the payment went through. This was a half-hour process. I was quoted by the confirmation that we would be expecting delivery Dec. 1 to 15th. I am so ticked, but I suppose it could have been worse. Ugh!
