Apple’s 64-bit PowerBook G5 coming, but when?

“The 64-bit PowerPC G5 processor will undoubtedly be a fixture of Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ keynote next week’s Worldwide Developers Conference. After all, it’s the basis of the company’s workstation and server lines. But Mac professionals, and even Linux programmers, will be waiting for word of a mobile version,” Mark Hachman reports for eWeek.

“According to officials of IBM Corp., the technology for a notebook version of the PowerPC G5, a k a the PowerPC 970 series of processors, may be at hand,” Hachman reports. “IBM’s PowerPC 970 family of microprocessors has quietly become a rarity in the computing world: a one-size-fits-all architecture used for notebooks, desktops and even low-end servers. The chip is based on the company’s longstanding POWER architecture, a dual-core processor used in some of IBM’s server lines.”

“Now, IBM is being asked to migrate those chips into the crucial notebook market while simultaneously designing an architecture that can be competitive in low-end servers,” Hachman reports. “Norman Rohrer, chief designer of the PowerPC 970FX chip used in Apple’s Power Mac G5 desktops and Xserve servers, said the same chip that IBM uses for its desktop machines can also be used comfortably within future PowerBook notebooks through a power-management technique called ‘PowerTune.’ Rohrer would not comment on the time frame for a chip incorporating PowerTune. Industry insiders said a PPC 970FX-based notebook is not expected to ship before the end of the year.”

Apple will continue to be far ahead of the visionless Wintel herd.

I find it funny that people now expect Apple, and only Apple, to be innovative. You don’t hear people moaning about Dell not producing a 64-bit notebook computer or about Microsoft not having a single OS that installs on both 32 and 64-bit systems and works seamlessly in both … because everyone knows they can’t.

    Re: Bush

    Go see “Fahrenheit 9/11”!!!
The movie makes it very clear, BASED ONLY ON PUBLISHED FACTS, what the whole Bush dynasty has done. The movie simply connects the dots for those that cannot (or will not) see the obvious connections.

The US Constitution (Article III, Section 3) states…
“Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or, in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.”

Bush immediately sent his Bin Laden friends back to Saudi Arabia as soon as the FAA reopened the airspace after 9/11, completely avoiding all questioning by the CIA and FBI, and then totally ignoring the desires of the rest of the world, he waged war against a country that was of no threat to the United States.

Special forces from the US could have easily and quietly taken out Saddam Hussein. The US military didn’t have to kill thousands of civilians and hundreds of their own young men and women. But by having a war, it gave billions of dollars to his buddies at defense related companies and took the focus off of his Saudi buddies.

The man’s not an idiot; he’s evil!

The world’s population hates the US citizens for ignoring the world and allowing it to continue after knowing the facts. And it STILL goes on…!! When will the US people stop this insanity?! They probably think it is okay just to wait until the next election after THOUSANDS more have died. Are the citizens any less evil to allow it to continue, to allow one more death in the name of war and oil generated profits for the wealthy few? Your young soldiers are dying to protect Bush’s money, NOT your land!!

  2. Aryugaetu, besides all the other crap you blather you make the statement: “The world’s population hates the US citizens for ignoring the world and allowing it to continue after knowing the facts.”
I am an American and have lived in Europe (and travelled throughtout most of the countries here) for quite a few years and have not yet met a single person in Europe that hates US citizens.
Most European citizens are like American citizens in that they are interested in their family, job, health and local community, sports and could care less about the international scene other than to read some idiot like you say stuff that is not true.

And this crap: “Your young soldiers are dying to protect Bush’s money, NOT your land!!”
What in the hell are you talking about? What Bush money?
And if he had any what is he going to do with it? Buy some more worthless scrubland in Texas?

  3. Re: Aryugaetu

In agreement, except for the Special Forces bit.

US Special Forces couldn’t have quietly taken out Saddam Hussein, they’re not good enough. The Israelis have better special forces and would have if they could have.

US military power operates almost exclusively under the overwhelming force principle, like the ‘shock and awe’ bombardment. Whilst undoubtably the US has some great teams and individuals they are small in number and not as well trained. (In Afghanistan when bin Laden was thought to be hiding in the mountains at the urgent request of the US the UK sent 1700 special forces to help out because the UK troops had high altitude training that the US don’t).

Apart from US allies UK and Israel the French also have some top special forces, the US doesn’t make the top three, may not even make the top ten. US Special Forces are good for missions like the rescue of Jennifer Lynch and making movies.

  4. Anyone who relies on a hollywood movie to get their facts should be considered a child.
Grow up. Do you really think Moore made this movie to “inform” people?
He did it to make a name for himself..make money, and push is own personal beliefs.
Ironically, this movie makes me proud to be an American.
Can you name any other country in the world where such a movie would make it to the “big screen”….that is, a movie that is so anti-current government?

  5. special forces:

i don’t like seeing anything good said about the french. so, i would like to point out that there are no frenchman in the french foreign legion. and yes i would agree that they are right up there with the israeli special forces.

  6. most die-hard republicans won’t see F9-11, because they are afraid of it. It’s funny, because everybody knows that the best way to make a decision is to get informed, and disseminate yourself. I bet most people that want Bush in really would rather not get this information. They would rather turn a blind eye, and we know how healthy that is. Sad. It’s really sad that someone would get so worked up by a film they have never seen and go about PREACHING like they know what it is about. The fact is, if you haven’t seen it, you don’t know what the f*ck you’re talking about.

  7. Take Setting for example. 99% chance he hasn’t seen the film, but is holding on dearly to this review. I read the review because thats the kind of person I am. I think their are some valid points in the review. I also saw the film, and I know that that their are some very valid points in the film too.

  8. hey freebee, just like Passion of Christ right? Mel Gibson only made that movie because he wants MONEY! He doesn’t care about God, or anything other than himself. I mean thats the way it is with all directors isn’t it?

You’re the one who needs to grow up. This is a DOCUMENTARY jackass. Do you know what that word means?

  9. Documentary=Absolute truth…..uhh yea..right.
And I am sure Mel Gibson did insert his own bias into the movie….
    Tis human nature….
If you think Moore does not have an agenda….well…your a little naive.
Have you seen the Movie…Do you know what the “f*ck you’re talking about”..?
And don’t assume I am a Republican and don’t agree with the move. I was only stating the obvious that you can’t make big decisions because of info seen in a movie….and this hardly qualifies as a documentary. This film moves in one direction…and one only.

  10. “Anyone who relies on a hollywood movie to get their facts should be considered a child.

He did it to make a name for himself..make money, and push is own personal beliefs.

Can you name any other country in the world where such a movie would make it to the “big screen”….that is, a movie that is so anti-current government?”

If left up to you fascist republicans, this movie would NOT have made it to the screen. You tried to block it at every turn because you KNOW what the truth will do to you fear mongering charade.

I made this movie for the benefit of MORONS like yourself, who are incapable of accepting the facts, choose to live in a fantasy world of denial, and refuse to admit that aside from your mentally challenged brethren, the civilized world KNOWS the truth, and this movie simply lets the evil doers hang themselves with their own words.

If anyone around here is a CHILD, it is certainly you and the other MORONS who in spite of all the facts, are still voting against their own best interest while arrogantly, ignorantly supporting a fascist regime.

I truly pity you your blind stupidity.

  11. Yes i did see the movie. Sure I agree that the movie will have a “skew”. What doesn’t? The news? Yeah right. A Book? nope. So your point is moot. We have to gather information from a variety of sources and make up our own minds. Moores movie is based on Fact. It is a documentary, and as such it has presented only facts, but at times in a way that proves his particular way of thinking. In my opinion there were a few things that I didn’t particularly agree with how it was presented. On the other hand, there were many FACTS that were presented very, very well. There were even some things that I had not seen or read about before and in that case I have been INFORMED. Now, as I do with most information, I will cross reference it.

Further you are just another one of those guys that puts words into other people mouths in order to serve your own argument. Did I ever say “Absolute Truth”? No. There you have it. Stop grasping at straws.

    and…
What do YOU know about Moores incentives for this movie? Nothing, so you can stop putting you’re two cent in about Michael Moore’s “character”

    ps:
As far as being proud of America, that goes both ways. We have two republican groupd that have tried desperately to keep this from the American people, and are still trying. What does that say about how the “ultra-right” think in this country, and how they would run it if they had the chance?

  12. either extreme is bad. Ultra-right scares the crap out of me…ultra-left (Moore) scares me almost as bad.
I never said the movie would not be informative…and yes, we agree that everything has a bias…but his bias is unusually strong. As far as knowing is motives…I don’t. But given his history, it seems to be pretty clear.
And yes, I have seen the movie.
And no, I am not a Republican.
    And for “Michael Moore” above….your right, I am a MORON…most people with Ph.Ds are……

  13. DON’T READ IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE MOVIE

I too am critical of Michael Moore, and I concede that his motives are fairly clear. What I meant was more that his motive isn’t necessarily to only make money. I thought the movie was good, and at it’s best, was hiLarious and sad. I think that his movie should be seen, as it at least paints a picture of war that doesn’t look like a video game. I felt the connections to the Saudis money and the Bush invesments and all that went with it was very good, and also something everyone should see. I felt the pictures of the Iraqi children playing with kites before the invasion painted, although factual, a little too rosy a picture of Iraq’s “happiness”.

  14. Michael Moore discussing the scene with kids flying kites from http://abcnews.go.com/sections/Entertainment/Politics/tapper_moore_transcript_040626-1.html

TAPPER: Discussing pre-war Iraq, your films shows many tranquil scenes of the country, kids flying kites, smiling Iraqis, but knowing what we do know about the brutality of Saddam’s regime, which you do mention at one point in the film, are those pictures a fair representation of pre-war Iraq?

MOORE: They’re a fair representation of the civilians that were killed by our bombs. And I wanted to spend just 20 seconds so that the people in the United States could see what human beings look like in Iraq. Children flying kites, a kid getting his hair cut in a barber shop, a couple getting married these were human beings.

And we bombed and we bombed in an indiscriminate manner and according to The New York Times two weeks ago 50 airstrikes, we were zero for 50 in hitting our targets and what we did hit were a lot of civilians. And that is what I show in this movie. The ABC News and the other networks did a very good job and have done a good job in showing what a brutal dictator Saddam Hussein was. But we rarely got to see images of everyday life in Iraq and I wanted to show that, just as one human being that thought that we should see these human beings and not have them dehumanized as statistics in a war.

TAPPER: But would it not be a more fair representation in your film to have also included some images of the brutality of Saddam’s regime, the Kurds he gassed, the Iraqis he oppressed, the millions of Iraqis he killed?

MOORE: I do show Saddam Hussein shaking hands with Don Rumsfeld in 1983 back when he was our good friends and our ally. A Saddam Hussein that received nearly $4 billion in some form of aid from the United States during that time. We also supplied him with satellite photos of Iranian troop movements which he then used to gas Iranian troops. He was our good friend in the 1980s, Don Rumsfeld and others are well aware of that because they were involved in the Reagan administration. And that’s what I show in my movie, things you haven’t seen that much on the news.

TAPPER: Well, the picture of Rumsfeld shaking Saddam’s hand is fairly well-known but

MOORE: Oh no, the American people don’t know that.

  15. And if any of you read the little three paragraph summary at the top of this page, you’d know that the article is about 64-bit Powerbooks. Any thoughts on that subject?

  16. Yeah, I’m psyched that this is positive news regarding the 64 bit powerbooks. I plan on buying one when they come out, but am not getting my hopes up anytime soon. How bout you treadlightly, any thoughts on this subject?

  17. How about some 64-bit software for existing G5s? With 8 GB of RAM available now, it’s pathetic that Photoshop can only use 2 GB (I work with large files). C’mon Adobe, get off your ass and stop holding Macs back to make Windows look not so far behind.

Neocons are crapping their pants over Fahrenheit 9/11. Moore was very careful to let the Bushies hang themselves, after all the right wing attacks on his spins in Bowling For Columbine. About all the cons can come up with is, he’s fat! The neocons are done, stick a fork in them.

  18. As much as I love Michael Moore’s work, I hate it when political discussions hijack Mac forums.

The linked article gave me the impression that the G5 PowerBook will be possible when the next generation of 970 CPUs are ready. I guess that early 2005 is not out of the question for such a product so we can all start saving for it now.

Having said that, I wonder if Apple has any plans to utilise Freescale/Motorola’s next-generation G4s. I have read that these processors combine several motherboard components into one CPU, making them ideal for portable systems. If Apple does plan to use these processors then we could see the G5s in all desktops and the G4s in all portables.

  19. Uh, Setting-you-straight, that article you gave a link to is by Christopher Hitchens. He is a severe critic of Mother Teresa and the Author of “The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice” which strongly criticized Mother Teresa. He also made a film about this I believe. I agree that Michael Moore is sensationalistic but this guy is cut from the same bolt of cloth.

I haven’t seen F9-11 yet but am looking forward to it. Knowing Moore’s sensationalistic tendencies I will take it with a grain of salt. If it is similiar to “Bowling for Columbine”, I know that it will take a lot of facts and present them in a very slanted way. They will be still be facts however, and worth knowing about. (Hitchens might have a point about Mother Teresa too, I would like to see his film on her too ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

If you want something that is a little less biased and more objective check out Al Franken’s work. He is meticulous about being fair and still royally faces the Bush administration. You can get “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right” as an Audiobook at ITMS at

It really is an eye opener and totally accurate.
