HBO chairman Casey Bloys offered a gracious, slightly wary reaction after Apple TV finished first among platforms at the 2026 Emmys, calling Apple’s programming chiefs “very handsome competitors” while noting the intimidation of going up against a very rich company.
Apple TV collected 28 Emmys, topping HBO/HBO Max’s 21 and marking the first time the streamer led the overall tally. HBO still took two of the three top scripted prizes — Outstanding Drama Series for The Pitt and Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series for DTF St. Louis — but lost Outstanding Comedy Series when Apple’s Widow’s Bay beat Hacks.
Speaking to Deadline at HBO Max’s afterparty at the San Vicente Bungalows, Bloys was asked what he thought of Apple’s night and its first No. 1 finish.“Well, I’m very happy because I think that they’re very handsome competitors, Zack and Jamie,” he said, referring to Apple TV heads Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht. “Look, we’ve had very formidable competitors in going back to Showtime, FX, AMC, Netflix, Amazon, so [when] Apple, everybody, keeps us on our toes, I think we do our best work. It’s a little scary that they’re a trillion-dollar company, but we’ll continue to do what we do, which is put out the best shows that we can.”
The comment distilled HBO’s long-running position in the awards race. For decades the network has cycled through rivals — first broadcast, then cable, then streamers — while remaining one of the few legacy brands that still consistently contends at the top. Last year HBO tied Netflix for most wins; this year Apple pulled ahead. Bloys framed that pressure as useful rather than fatal: competition, he argued, is what forces HBO to stay sharp.
The remark also underscored the structural gap. Apple can spend at a scale few entertainment companies can match. Bloys did not pretend otherwise. He simply restated HBO’s pitch: keep making the best shows possible and let the work compete.
Whether that formula is enough against a platform with Apple’s resources will be tested again next awards season. For one night, though, the HBO boss chose congratulations over complaint — with a single, carefully worded acknowledgment that the new leader on the board is also the richest player in the room.
MacDailyNews Take: Make that a $4.878 trillion-dollar company.
Those who can wrap their heads around Apple’s massive cash mountain and the company’s unparalleled ability to generate cash can clearly see who the winner will be. The most talented producers, writers, directors, editors, actors, etc. are attracted to exactly what Apple has and makes in vast abundance: Cash. The King.
