Apple has officially released the first public beta of macOS 27 Golden Gate, giving everyday users their first hands-on look at the next major version of the Mac operating system. The update, announced at WWDC 2026 in June, follows three developer betas and focuses on polishing the Liquid Glass design language introduced last year, expanding Apple Intelligence capabilities, and delivering a smarter Siri experience.
Key New Features in macOS 27 Golden Gate
• Refined Liquid Glass Design: One of the biggest complaints about macOS Tahoe (26) was its inconsistent and sometimes overly aggressive transparency effects. Golden Gate introduces a new system-wide slider that lets users control the opacity of Liquid Glass UI elements — from fully transparent to heavily frosted. Windows now feature more consistent rounded corners, edge-to-edge sidebars with colorful icons return, and overall readability and contrast have been significantly improved.
• Siri AI Takes Center Stage: The headline feature is the new Siri AI, powered by an enhanced Apple Intelligence architecture. Siri now has its own dedicated app for conversational history, integrates deeply into Spotlight (with a “Search or Ask” interface), and can understand context from your Messages, Mail, files, and even what’s visible on your screen via Visual Intelligence. It also gains improved writing tools, natural language Shortcuts, and better on-device processing.
• Search and Performance Boosts: Apple completely rebuilt the indexing system, addressing longstanding Spotlight and Finder reliability issues. Search is faster and more accurate, AirDrop transfers are quicker, network file browsing feels snappier, and the system overall feels more responsive.

• Redesigned writing tools and expanded Apple Intelligence features across Safari, Photos, and more.
• New Golden Gate-themed wallpapers and screen savers (including dynamic Sunset and Night versions).

How to Install the Public Beta
- Back up your Mac using Time Machine.

Visit beta.apple.com and enroll your device in the Apple Beta Software Program.

Go to System Settings > General > Software Update.

Click the info button next to Beta Updates and select macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta.

Download and install when ready.
Apple warns that beta software may contain bugs and is not recommended for primary devices. Users should install on a secondary Mac or separate APFS volume for safety.
