Apple Original Films on Tuesday unveiled the trailer for the upcoming action comedy “Mayday,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.
“Mayday” is a genre-bending, action-packed buddy comedy that flips the spy thriller on its head. When hotshot U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly (Reynolds) is sent on a top-secret mission into Russian territory at the height of the Cold War, the operation implodes, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines. Discovered by Nikolai Ustinov (Branagh), a gruff ex-KGB agent with a penchant for American culture, Troy thinks he’s toast — but could an unlikely alliance between the two lead to Troy’s rescue and a bond neither saw coming?
An Apple Original Film hailing from Skydance Media, “Mayday” is co-directed, written and produced by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. The film is produced by Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger, and Maximum Effort’s Ashley Fox and Johnny Pariseau. Sounds like a propaganda puff piece. Today, Russians are no friends of anyone. Why do we want to see such delusional slop now?
The cold war was not funny, in fact it’s partially responsible for the government largesse we suffer today, and the delusions of our current leaders to go back to a time of unlimited military budgets. The reality is that by the 1990’s, diplomacy ended the need for ridiculous military buildup. Those expenses nearly bankrupted Russia then, and it is actively bankrupting the USA today. Now the USA has a president whose penchant for imported slavic wives and skirting rules or basically any decent behaviour is well documented. He’s openly chummy with a Russian warlord who has, with impunity and feeble US response, embarked on a hot war of territorial aggression. Neither country has leaders who could be trusted, and the populations of both countries have no real connections nor common ground from which to begin any meaningful friendship. Russia has tightened ties with North Korea, China, and Iran to prop up its oil export business, enriching the oligarchs as the Russian people starve. The USA has embarked on yet another badly chosen Middle East war with unclear objectives, but apparently to prop up the price of oil for the benefit of nobody but the US Big Oil corporations while US tech broligarchs are carving up the US democracy. The debt load hits new records and the average US citizen slowly slides into poverty under sustained inflation that the US president doesn’t obviously intend to fight. So let’s write a comedy set in the cold war! What a funny idea!
The basic plot isn’t even original. How ridiculous that anyone would attempt to rewrite the Gary Powers story as a comedy. Powers was shot down in 1960 and was sentenced to 10 years in a Soviet prison for espionage. He was justly criticized for taking proper evasive action during his flight, failing to deploy the self-destruct switches after the airplane was struck. Thus the Soviets were able to recover the U2 plane largely intact, and gained intelligence while interrogating Powers. This poor conduct and decisionmaking erased some of the aerospace advantage the US had been building in the 1950s. Powers was released in a 1962 prisoner exchange. So nobody with an ounce of US patriotism should be excited to laugh at a cold war farce movie. Reynolds has spent the his career attempting to be a comedian, but he’s not funny and a cold war comedy is just not a genre we need to see, ever.
