According to analyst Ross Young, Apple is preparing for the next generation of its 27-inch Studio Display with a big upgrade to Mini LED backlighting. It’s expected to be released in late 2025 or early next year.
Apple’s Studio Display already delivers excellent color accuracy and a very sharp 5K resolution, but it can also be susceptible to minor backlight bleed and other irregularities that sometimes come with conventional LED panels.
Switching to Mini LED would further improve the monitor’s uniformity while making blacks look darker when watching videos. These are things I’d hope for from a display that starts at $1,599.
Apple could also take another swing at improving the built-in camera with this rumored Studio Display sequel. The camera quality was underwhelming when the product first came to market, which led Apple to issue a firmware update designed to boost its clarity. I’m still more than satisfied with the Studio Display’s integrated speakers, however, which have been good enough to negate the need for standalone speakers on my desk.
MacDailyNews Note: Mini LED displays are superior to traditional LED displays because they use smaller light-emitting diodes, allowing for more precise backlighting and higher contrast ratios. This results in deeper blacks, brighter highlights, and better overall picture quality, especially in dark scenes. Mini LED also enables more local dimming zones, reducing light bleed and improving color accuracy compared to traditional LEDs. Additionally, Mini LED displays are more energy-efficient and can achieve higher brightness levels, making them ideal for HDR content. These enhancements provide a more immersive viewing experience, bridging the gap between traditional LED and advanced technologies like OLED.

Apple’s monitors used to be the top of the line no matter the physical size. Years ago it really was a toss up as to whether to by a Trinitron based monitor from a third party or buy an Apple monitor. We should all remember the introduction of the Cinema Display. (“We’re introducing something truly huge.”) Apple outright owned the ≈ 30″ market for over a year. (I had two of them tied to my desktop Mac shortly after they were introduced.)
Today, Apple’s monitors are also ran items. You can buy equivalent monitors, and in many cases better monitors, for significantly less. While I don’t think I would ever buy a Dell monitor, in some cases Dell’s monitors are better than Apple’s. Why Apple does not take that as a slap across the face and cause Apple to wake up to move to the forefront I will NEVER understand.
Apple introducing mini LED into their 27″ monitor in late 2025 or 2026 is just asinine. There have been mini LED monitors out for some time. With regard to monitors, it’s almost as if Apple is moving at the pace of, “Well if we absolutely must move forward, then we will.”
