In a recent development that underscores the challenges of digital content accessibility in restrictive regulatory environments, the Pray.com app is being removed from the Apple App Store in mainland China.
Founded in 2016, Pray.com is the world’s No.1 app for daily prayer and Bible-based audio content, reaching more than 16 million people worldwide through its mobile app and website Pray.com.
This decision aligns with the Chinese government’s policies on internet publishing and significantly affects Pray.com’s mission to grow faith and cultivate community on a global scale.
A direct consequence of this action is that individuals in China will no longer have the ability to participate in the National Day of Prayer livestream through Pray.com… This livestream has been a pivotal moment for people around the world to be able to join in collective prayer and worship with the most influential Christians in the United States.
This revocation signals a change from previous policies, which allowed the Christian prayer app to minister in the Communist nation. “Since starting Pray.com we’ve grown accustomed to positive relations with China. President Xi has allowed for the printing of nearly 150 million Bibles per year, and President Trump ensured that Bibles were exempt from Chinese tariffs,” said cofounder Michael Lynn.
Steve Gatena, founder and CEO of Pray.com, expressed that “in response to these limitations, our team is exploring alternative avenues to deliver our content and services to people in mainland China. As we work on a solution, I want to personally extend an invitation to President Xi Jinping to join us for this year’s National Day of Prayer event in Washington, D.C.”
“I am speaking with former President Donald J. Trump tonight. We are committed to overcoming these barriers to ensure that our global community remains connected and supported, especially during significant spiritual observances such as the National Day of Prayer,” said Matthew Potter, cofounder of Pray.com.
Pray.com stands in solidarity with its members in China during this challenging time and is working tirelessly to find solutions that align with regulatory requirements while maintaining its core mission to grow faith and cultivate community.
“We will continue to pursue avenues to deliver Pray.com as far and wide as possible,” said Ryan Beck, cofounder of Pray.com.
MacDailyNews Take: It’s amazing the Chinese Communist Party ever allowed the Pray.com app to be distributed via Apple’s App Store in the first place.

Might as well invite Putin too – I’m sure you’ll will convert him.
Putin, an Orthodox Christian, reportedly prays daily in a small chapel next to his presidential office.
In Russia, Orthodox Christianity is the most widely professed faith by far:
Religion in Russia:
– Russian Orthodoxy (41.1%)
– Believers, but not adherents of any particular religion (25.2%)
– Atheists (13%)
– Other Christians (6.3%)
– Muslims (6.5%)
– Undeclared (5.5%)
– Neopagans and Tengrists (1.2%)
– Buddhists (0.5%)
– Other religions 0.7%)
Putin cynically uses Orthodoxy for political purposes. He’s been tied to many murders. He rose to power on the Russian apartment bombings of 1999, that was the rationale for the bloody Chechen war under his premiership. He was appointed president when Yeltsin abdicated at the tend of that year. Now 100s of thousands soldiers and civilians dead in Ukraine, hundreds of billions in destruction, tens of thousands of kids kidnapped to be Russified. He’s the worst thing to happen to Europe and the Russian people since Stalin.
Good point, the US and UK, who ran a coup in Ukraine in 2014, installed an actor as president of Ukraine, ran mysterious bio labs in Ukraine, sent illegal cluster bomb munitions to Ukraine, stymied the Minsk Accords, aggressively pushed military bases and NATO towards Russian borders, and consistently vetoed ceasefire proposals in Gaza after 10k+ children were bombed.. are the good guys.
Might want to ask Metropolitans from other Orthodox churches what they think.
Putin’s “religion” is so far disconnected from Orthodox Christianity as to be laughable, except that his horrible actions have been so tragic for so many. Like so many leaders, they embrace a religion, only so long as it serves their self-interest.
Pure BS. Putin is autocrat and a cold blooded murderer. Stop invoking this criminal to anything else.
Holy shit!(storm…)
Cheering on the Pray app.
