Apple has acknowledged a significant issue affecting the inner folding screens of a limited number of its newly launched iPhone Duo devices, according to The Wall Street Journal. Some early customers have opened their new $2,000 phones only to find bright lines stretching across the folding display, compromising its usability.
An Apple spokesman confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that the company was aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units and encouraged impacted customers to contact AppleCare for a replacement. He didn’t specify how many units are affected, and says Apple isn’t recalling the product.
The problem has surfaced shortly after the iPhone Duo’s retail launch as Apple’s first foldable smartphone. Customers have reported cracks or bright horizontal lines appearing along or near the central hinge crease, sometimes after only a few openings and closings of the device. In some cases, owners described a sticking sensation or audible pop before the display damage appeared.
The Wall Street Journal’s coverage highlights the contrast between strong early demand for the premium device and these first-generation reliability concerns. Apple has directed affected owners to AppleCare for free replacements while maintaining that the issue is limited in scope and that the product is not being recalled. The company has not detailed the root cause or provided a precise failure rate.
MacDailyNews Take: For owners experiencing the defect, the recommended path is to contact AppleCare promptly.
