Apple preps ‘Apple GPT’ generative AI tool

Apple is prepping generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools that could challenge those of OpenAI’s ChapGPT, Alphabet’s Bard, and others.

MArk Gurman for Bloomberg News:

The iPhone maker has built its own framework to create large language models — the AI-based systems at the heart of new offerings like ChatGPT and Google’s Bard — according to people with knowledge of the efforts. With that foundation, known as “Ajax,” Apple also has created a chatbot service that some engineers call “Apple GPT.” …The work includes trying to address potential privacy concerns related to the technology. A spokesman for the Cupertino, California-based company declined to comment.

Behind the scenes, Apple has grown concerned about missing a potentially paramount shift in how devices operate. Generative AI promises to transform how people interact with phones, computers and other technology. And Apple’s devices, which produced revenue of nearly $320 billion in the last fiscal year, could suffer if the company doesn’t keep up with AI advances.

That’s why Apple began laying the foundation for AI services with the Ajax framework, as well as a ChatGPT-like tool for use internally. Ajax was first created last year to unify machine learning development at Apple, according to the people familiar with the effort…

Apple employees say the company’s tool essentially replicates Bard, ChatGPT and Bing AI, and doesn’t include any novel features or technology. The system is accessible as a web application and has a stripped-down design not meant for public consumption. As such, Apple has no current plans to release it to consumers, though it is actively working to improve its underlying models… While the company doesn’t yet have a concrete plan, people familiar with the work believe Apple is aiming to make a significant AI-related announcement next year.

    1. “Proceed to the route. Proceed to the route. Proceed to the….”

Hopefully Siri’s impatient and rude command will, at least, be more tempered and kind with Apple’s GPT. In the meantime, Siri, please accept my apology for making another wrong turn in-spite of all your help.

  1. I’ve started using ChatGPT as a learning assistant. It’s wonderful in that you can ask a long and complex question and get exactly what you’re looking for. For example, “Some say Sodium Chloride is the best salt for the human body because it is pure salt, but others say that sea salt, Himalayan pink salt, or others salts are a better choice because of the additional nutrients that are found in them. What are the pros and cons of using iodized salt, kosher salt, sea salt and pink salt?” You could even say, “Write an essay on the above salts, expressing clear pros and cons for each, and ending with a clear method of determining what choice would be best for moderate daily consumption.” If you ask Siri anything remotely like the above she’ll send you to a poor selection of three websites. Google Bard will actually suggest purchasing options. So yeah, Siri is woefully behind. Honestly I’d like very much to get ChatGPT integrated into Siri like Google Search is integrated into Safari.

    1. Integrating chatGPT would be a great start, but it’s also being engineered to be biased. I’m sure an Apple version will also be at least somewhat sterilized (eg regarding political correctness, violence, sexual topics). It should work like search engines, you get to choose alternatives as the back end plug in so better or unique alternatives can be used as they become available (eg Elon Musk’s “basedAI” project).
