Apple is reportedly working to allow iPhones and iPads to access third-party app stores in order to comply with new European Union requirements scheduled to go into effect in 2024, but such a move won’t hurt the company too much.

Apple is working to allow direct downloads, or “sideloading” of apps from the web, including potentially third-party app stores, onto iPhones.
Currently, the iPhone’s App Store is the only way to download software onto iPhones.
At first glance, this would seem to address the biggest antitrust complaint Apple has faced over the past decade… In the very unlikely worst-case scenario for Apple, if alternative app stores in Europe resulted in a total loss of App Store sales in the region, it would only dent Apple’s services business by about 4%, its total revenue by about 1%, and its earnings per share by 2.5%, according to a Morgan Stanley estimate published Wednesday.
Apple reported $394 billion in total sales, with $78 billion coming from services, in its 2022 fiscal year, which ended in September.
MacDailyNews Take: Adding the ability to access third-party app stores for iPhone and iPad also removes a selling point for Android phones and tablets, a crucial selling point for some, that is likely to result in further acceleration of Android to iPhone upgraders. So, third-party app stores for iPhone and iPad won’t hurt Apple too much. In fact, it might even benefit Apple.

Seems like a waste of resources to focus on features like this that nobody is asking for. EU is so many decades behind the United States in technology development and applications there-of that it’s rather sad to see them legislate draconian laws under the guise of fairness, standardization, etc. Apple should just take the fines for that region like they did in the Netherlands, a country that demonstrated a complete lack of understanding for how software is developed.
Adding the ability to access third-party app stores for iPhone and iPad also removes an a-hole point for applecynic’s love of Android phones and tablets, a crucial selling point for some, and a crucial point of sheer wanqery from applecynic, that is likely to result in further acceleration of Android to iPhone upgraders, and further acceleration of applecynic going mad, because he no longer has anything to complain about, and will be spending more time masticating his sausage. So, third-party app stores for iPhone and iPad won’t hurt Apple too much. In fact, it might even benefit Apple, but it won’t benefit Applecnutnyc’s mental health – it will only drive him further mad.
In further news… your butt has achieved ignition.
Applecynic, how does it feel living rent-free in their heads? lol
Vindicating!
The mega cynique has asked for this for some time. Because he soaks EU parliamentarians corks, he has finally won. Long love AppleCynic! He is the boinkers boinker, the soaker of corks. A whine connoisseur.
Third party store. Hmmm not really excited about this. I’ll stick with people who created it.
Look at that! A choice! As it should be, now that we have one.
You have the choice to get forked, but you persist in being a fork wit.
Looking forward to the iTunes Store and Bandcamp finally coming to Spotify. Spotify has not allowed any other stores to operate within their service for a long time and it has stifled innovation. Also look forward to Gucci being forced to sell Prada within their store now… stupid european logic LMAO 🤣
No but now we will have stores that can sell Prada, unlike before, and other music stores on our personal devices.
Correction! You actually can access stores within stores… the Apple App Store. Just downloaded the Gucci and Prada apps and I’m shopping in their stores. Clearly the market already worked itself out for user choice without the meddling of an ignorant, foreign bureaucracy, especially when further considering the multitude of mobile platforms available to humans these days. I also found dozens of music apps in the App Store ready to take my money. How foolish of me to continue posting on subjects I clearly know nothing about!
That’s if the Prada Appl is even allowed in Apple’s App Store. See, if Prada decided to make a “Apple Sucks” T-Shirt, the Apple store would be within it’s rights to not carry it. That doesn’t take precedence over my right to buy it. But I know these things are too subtle for you.
I await the opening of a fourth party store.
Yuge glorious stores… with parties. Four a day! I call them four party stores. Village People blasting all day! And bathrooms, big beautiful bathrooms that you only need to flush once, it’s like the Amazon river going down, buhleeve me! With deep toilets and sinks, plated in 18 karat yellow. It’s such and experience people tell me I’m KIng Toilet….
Third-party app stores for iPhone and iPad won’t hurt Apple too much, but it will butthurt applefscknic. It’s a real gut punch for him because he’ll have nothing left to complain about. Apple hatred can no longer live rent free in his head – he’ll have to start paying other app stores. Delicious news, a real fsck you to appleshizznyc from Apple and by Apple. Haters of Apple are so dumb, Apple shows them all.
I don’t need to be smart at all. Apple isn’t smarter than anti-trust law.
