Dow surges to record high on news of effective COVID vaccine

U.S. stocks jumped on Monday after Moderna said preliminary trial data showed its COVID vaccine was more than 94% effective. Earlier, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added over 450 points, or 1.5%, and reached an intraday record. The S&P 500 rose 1.2% and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.7%.

COVID-19 coronavirusFred Imbert and Thomas Franck for CNBC:

The promising Moderna announcement makes the Massachusetts-based biotech firm the second drugmaker to say it has a potentially effective vaccine.

Similar trial results last week from Pfizer and BioNTech drove investors into underperforming names dependent on a vaccine reopening the economy. The companies said at the time that their candidate was more than 90% effective in preventing Covid-19 among participants.

A vaccine “turns what could have been a prolonged crisis into something closer to a natural disaster (large shock, swift recovery),” TS Lombard analysts Steven Blitz and Andrea Cicione wrote in a note. “Without an effective vaccine, current EPS consensus expectations (pointing to a return to trend by the end of next year) would be on the optimistic side. But with one, they may actually come to pass.”

Traders were also excited on Monday after Moderna said its vaccine remains stable at 36 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature of a standard home or medical refrigerator, for up to 30 days. It can be stored for up to six months at negative 4 degrees Fahrenheit. By comparison, Pfizer’s vaccine requires a storage temperature of minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit.

MacDailyNews Take: Obviously, an effective COVID vaccine that can be stored in a standard fridge is great news for everyone who longs to get back to “normal” life as soon as possible.

  1. You’re welcome, again.

        1. Sarah, you are aware, aren’t you, that the Georgia Secretary of State is a Republican. The Governor is not only a rabidly pro-Trump Republican, but is also the former Secretary of State who is widely believed to have manipulated the election process to ensure his own election as Governor over Stacy Abrams. Accusing them of throwing Georgia to Biden is like accusing Mother Teresa of being a brothelkeeper.

          1. You lie.

And your election fraud lie is falling apart before your eyes, Dem/Lib/Progs:

Once, one might argue is an accident. Twice is indicative of a larger issue.

So how many counties does this involve, exactly?

And in Floyd County, the Floyd County GOP Chair blamed it on the Dominion system. “It appears that our elections office did not misplace any ballots, rather it appears as if this is a computer software mishap with the Dominion system.”

            1. Not certified. Guess you don’t care about the rules being changed in Democrat states, dead people voting and like magic thousands of votes 100% for Biden show up AFTER Election Day.

It took 38 days in Gore vs. Bush to determine a winner. There is so much shenanigans this election it may take longer…

            2. I don’t care about them, because they did not happen to a degree to change the outcome. Every election is affected by human error and small-scale fraud, but it rarely amounts to more than a few hundred out of hundreds of thousands of votes cast. For your guy to win, he has to turn tens of thousands of votes in each of at least three states. That is not going to happen.

  2. President Trump didn’t lose the election.

How curious that President Trump won the largest non-white vote share for a Republican presidential candidate in 60 years. Biden underperformed Hillary Clinton in every major metro area around the country, except for Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Detroit, Michigan, Atlanta, Georgia, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

    Very curious.

Election analyst Robert Barnes observes in these “big cities in swing states run by Democrats… the vote even exceeded the number of registered voters.”

Trump’s victories in Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, and Pennsylvania were each on target until, in the middle of the night, counting was arbitrarily halted. Miraculously, several hundred thousand votes – all for Biden – were mysteriously ‘found’; Trump’s real leads subsequently vanished.

The protracted, eventual outcome will determine the contemporary relevance of Stalin’s observation that “those who cast the votes decide nothing, those who count the votes decide everything.”

    1. Give it a rest loser. Trump lost a second term by any empirical and legal standard. It’s done. The most secure election ever. Biden will be sworn in on Jan. 20, 2021.

Go back to your crib and cry yourself slowly back to sleep.

      1. “The most secure election ever.”

That laughable statement was made by the Executive Committee of the Election Infrastructure Government Coordinating Council (GCC) and the Election Infrastructure Sector Coordinating Council (SCC):

The two election software companies are members of the GCC’s Sector Coordinating Council:

        • Dominion Voting Systems
        • Smartmatic

        Try harder. You sound stupid.

        1. The election was two weeks ago. Every morning, there is some new story of a scandal. Every afternoon, the facts emerge and show that there was, at most, the sort of human error affecting a tiny proportion of the votes that has happened in every election since 1788. You keep railing against Dominion Software, yet virtually every example you have cited to date had absolutely nothing to do with their software. Elsewhere in this thread, we have somebody trying to suggest that the rabidly pro-Trump Governor of Georgia was in on the conspiracy.

There are repeated claims that there was something nefarious about the fact that election workers who had been working the in-person election since 6AM went home to get some sleep at 2AM the next morning before returning to count the mail-in ballots. The early in-person returns were overwhelmingly Republican because Democrats were voting by mail to preserve social distancing. The later mail-in returns were overwhelmingly Democrat because the President had been threatening Republicans not to vote by mail. The resulting “red mirage” followed by a “blue shift” had been predicted for weeks.

All that this crap is doing is undermining American faith in our electoral system and threatening the smooth transition of power that has marked our republic since 1796.

          1. You won’t post anything about this later because it doesn’t exist except as a fantasy where somehow slates of electors are awarded to Trump even though he lost state X or state Y.

A couple of yahoo Repubs just tried that in Michigan. It didn’t get past the first stage of their poorly conceived plan. Even if they had achieved step one there are so many checks on the process it never could have happened.

Oh, that wasn’t the nuclear option you were talking about? Doesn’t matter, all these kinds of options will amount to nothing, a big fat nothing just like Trump.

Do you lunatics really believe the Supreme Court is going to somehow come to Trump’s rescue and overturn Biden’s massive landslide win? Dream on little one, dream on.

          2. Rep. Brooks is absolutely mistaken. The Electoral Count Act of 1887, codified at 3 U.S.C. § 5, provides:

”If any State shall have provided, by laws enacted prior to the day fixed for the appointment of the electors, for its final determination of any controversy or contest concerning the appointment of all or any of the electors of such State, by judicial or other methods or procedures, and such determination shall have been made at least six days before the time fixed for the meeting of the electors, such determination . . . shall be conclusive, and shall govern in the counting of the electoral votes as provided in the Constitution, and as hereinafter regulated, so far as the ascertainment of the electors appointed by such State is concerned.”

So, if a state follows a law adopted before November 3, 2020, in certifying a slate of electors prior to December 8, the ballots cast by those electors on December 14 are the only votes that can be counted for that state. The state cannot alter its process for appointing electors after Election Day and Congress cannot reject the votes cast by the certified electors.

          3. Bwah ha haaa ha haa ha haaa ha haaaa! Trump just fired Sidney Powell, the lawyer who was supposed to be the Kraken, the great saviour of Trump’s legal defense. Oh the MAGA tears are so so so so so delicious.

    2. If those Republican State legislatures allowed mail in votes to be counted as they arrived, or to start counting a couple of days before the election, you would have known Trump was a loser that evening.

  3. On January 13, 2020, two months before the very first time he told the American people that the novel coronavirus was a threat. Well before he partially shut off travel from China—after 40 other countries had instituted more complete quarantines, and after US airlines had cancelled their flights from there. Ten months before America had 246.000 dead and tens of thousands in hospitals, with hospitalizations in some cities quadrupled in the last three weeks—many of which could have been avoided if he had ever even tried to convince his supporters to take public health guidance seriously.

So now he wants to take credit. Of course.

    1. Shut up already!

President shut down travel from China and was criticized by Biden and the media.

Pelosi in Chinatown, come on down we’re open.

Fauci did not recommend wearing masks early on and changed his tune more times than guppies reproduce.

WHO lied about the China threat last year and so did China by not alerting the world to the virus in real time.

None of these events the president had NOTHING to do with!!!

President did a superlative job and your criticism is nothing more than parroting FALSE talking points, do you understand?

President Trump deserves all the credit in the world for “warp speed” development of these vaccines working with the companies, staying on top of things and cheerleading all along.

So go crawl under your rock you lying partisan POS!!!…

      1. Trump did not shut down travel to China completely. He only included Chinese nationals and let in everyone else return who brought the virus back with them. Its like trying to catch a water leak with a sieve. It is very clear that the only reasons he did the ban was to make a political point to China.
Contrast this with how New Zealand and Australia handled people coming back to their countries. Quotas were in place for returning nationals. Everyone had to go in quarantined immediately on arriving to the country for 2 weeks. And guess was the spread of the virus was limited to minor outbreaks.
We are all done with Trump’s lies and soon this nightmare will be over.

        1. There is no reasoning with people who think that visiting Chinatown before the onset of community spread was more dangerous than visiting anyplace else. They would have been among the “very good people” who were currently boycotting and attacking Asian-Americans (not even necessarily Chinese-Americans), the trend that the Speaker was trying to counter.

Ditto for people who can’t understand the difference between discouraging the public from diverting a limited number of masks from frontline workers before community spread and encouraging the public to wear masks when community spread is infecting almost 200,000/day.

          1. “There is no reasoning with people who think that visiting Chinatown before the onset of community spread was more dangerous than visiting anyplace else.”

            YOU LIE!

            Nuff said…

            1. TxLoser,

No, you said “Asian-Americans are more dirty and diseased than ‘Real Americans.””

              No one else.

Dem/Lib/Progs are masters at nothing if not for projecting. That’s why they claim everybody else is a “racist.”

              Tx Loser, Mirror. Mirror, TxLoser.

            2. GeoB did not use exactly those words. He just insisted that my statement that Chinatown was no more dangerous than anywhere else in America on February 24 when Pelosi visited it was a “LIE! How else to interpret that than as a claim that Chinese-Americans were more diseased than other Americans?

            3. First Then thanks for calling out TxLoser as a LIAR! He has serious problems putting words in my mouth and posting lying false claims because the simple truth is Pelosi blew off the Covid threat and invited everyone to come on down is too difficult for him to handle…

            4. And it is obviously too complicated for you to handle that nobody believed on February 24 that there was community spread in Chinatown or anywhere else in the United States. There was no more reason to warn people to stay away from there than away from your local mall. Were you self-isolating that early? There was no more reason for Chinese-Americans to isolate than for you to do so.

The FIRST reported case of community spread was on February 26, well after Pelosi’s trip to Chinatown.

      2. trump is a con man who lies every day, all day, to manipulate you for personal gain.

You believe these things not because they’re true, they’re not, but because trump said them and you believe him because you are under the spell of a con man.

      3. Now it’s all over – IT REALLY IS , I propose a new collective term for the likes of GoeB, FW, DD, Kent, Sarah, Brutal Truth, BWforT, Truth Detector and their myriad aliases, et al – who, let’s face it all post remarkably similar formatted ‘in your face’ crap; the sycophantic foot soldiers, the bile-laden empty vessels, the gun-toting xenophobic homophobic filth, the planet-raping climate change deniers, the anti science goons, the trumpologists, the ‘my money or your life’ purveyors of pandemic perversity…. all of them, the Trump Grunt army of irrelevance – need a short form.
So I propose RUNT (no ‘G’ for Great here). It’s simple, descriptive and saves loads of wasted effort and duplication.
So, RUNT it is from now on, the last four years of infamy are all yours. The next four years of fresh Biden air are not.
        ‘Nuff said.

        1. @Gotcha,
Agreed as I have been saying the same thing for awhile. All of those childish losers are the same person as I do not believe there are THAT many Trump arse kissers. Maybe they are all a secret ‘nom de plume’ for that snake Lindsay Graham whose is asking to toss out legal ballots. After Jan 20, people like him and Trump and all those associated swamp creatures should face jail time and maybe the Republican Party can re-find their backbone and ethical compass.

    1. It’s only “weird” if you don’t get MDN notifications of publication of new articles like I do. I guess you don’t, “bot.” If you did you might be able to beat me to the top comment. I do like to be First Then comment. Thank you for noticing.

Also, you can stop repeating debunked fake news about “cases begin dropped” and other such nonsense. Cases are being refined as the affidavits and evidence are collected.

      1. Three Wisconsin voters, not the Trump campaign.

Here are your options, because you can’t seem to think even a move ahead, much less several:

Option 1: You “win” the fraud and get an old, feeble, weak Biden considered illegitimate by more than half the voters (even some Dems are questioning the fraud) who lacks a mandate to do anything but try to keep breathing. Then you get destroyed in 23.5 months in the midterms, lose the House, lose more in the Senate and then end up with Headboard Harris as your “standard-bearer.” Get destroyed by Trump (again, if he even wants to bother) or Kristi Noem & Co. in ’24.

Option 2: You lose in court due to trying to defraud the will of the American people and therefore no Democrat fraudster will even be able to get elected dog catcher ever again. Party destroyed by its own criminal hubris.

You don’t seem to grasp who’s really in the driver’s seat here.

      2. Bad Donald’s lawsuits are intended to raise funds to pay off his huge debt but he tells foolish donors that it’s to pay for legal fees in various states. He can’t help lying and grifting even as he leaves office. Dubya was bad too; He tanked the economy as soon as he got elected the first time and tanked it again upon leaving his second term.

      3. Oh, lookie here: Recount in Georgia Discovers Thousands of Uncounted Votes, Most for President Trump

Turns out that Floyd County apparently failed to count 2,631 votes. The votes were cast during early voting.

According to Coosavalley News, of 2,631 votes that hadn’t been counted, it appeared that between 1,600 and 1,900 were cast for President Trump.

According to Luke Martin, Floyd County GOP chairman:

“It is scary that this happened in Floyd County. Imagine what the numbers could look like in places like Fulton County.” Martin added, “It appears that our elections office did not misplace any ballots, rather it appears as if this is a computer software mishap with the Dominion system.”

Oops! Yet another “mistake” that magically benefited the guy with dementia who hid in his basement all year.

You Dems are sad. Your TDS actually drove you to CHEAT in massive fashion. Mistakes were made in your haste.

You will be utterly destroyed by your baseless hatred of President Trump.

      4. @First Then
The will of the American people is that Biden won handily and unambiguously. Not only by the popular vote, but the electoral vote as well.

The 2020 Trump campaign is not only dead, it’s really most sincerely dead! A house fell on it.

    2. Right, Bot. The mistake in Floyd County Georgia was due to an election worker failing to run the ballots through a scanner. The Dominion software had nothing to do with it. If the Democrats were planning a steal, they would pick a county that they control, not one that Republicans regularly win by 3-to-1 margins.

Similarly, if the Maricopa County Recorder in Arizona were out to steal the presidential election, why didn’t he engineer his own reelection against the Republican who won?

    3. It is not weird that FT is always first to post. He is an unemployed loser on welfare in mommy’s basement who, after drinking yet more from the federal teat, stuffs another pop tart into his fat grimy mouth and scans various discussion groups to write more crap.
Republican senators are starting to say the words, President-elect Biden. After next weekend that trickle will become a stream. Let us just hope the BLOTUS doesn’t start a war as an excuse to not replace a ‘Wartime President’. That scares the crap out of me and is a real threat to everyone….

      1. “It is not weird that FT is always first to post. He is an unemployed loser on welfare in mommy’s basement who, after drinking yet more from the federal teat, stuffs another pop tart into his fat grimy mouth and scans various discussion groups to write more crap.”

Go piss on a fire hydrant you Libtard Lightweight!

This is not over regardless of what the DEMOCRAT BIASED MEDIA tells you…

  4. Gosh, I came here to read about the Market response…

…and all I see is a bunch of political flailing on Trump’s loss.

    Oh well.

In any event, today’s Market is back down again (DJIA -393 as I write this .. nearly all of Monday’s gains). This isn’t all that surprising because while a viable vaccine is good news in the longer term, it is secondary because its an economic enabler – – the primary factor is still the Economy and economic activity.

So in looking beyond the prospects for 2-3Q 2021 results, we need to keep focused on the ball of the actual economy itself. And today’s Economic indicators are suggesting more than a slowdown in the recovery, but possibly the start of another contraction:

Meantime, there’s silence on extending bailouts, which is going to further depress consumer confidence.

    Today’s fun fact:

Moderna’s CoVid vaccine research was partially funded by Dolly Parton (“Dolly Parton COVID-19 Research Fund”) through Vanderbilt:

  5. Wall St’s economy is entirely separate from Main St.’s economy. It’s the modern day king’s castle on the hill separate from the farmers’s fields below, segregated, just as the king intends. The king revels in ill-gotten gains while the farmer actually works.
