Mossberg’s everyday tech wish list for 2016

“This is CES week, when the consumer electronics industry, and some of the tech industry, descends on Las Vegas like digital locusts to show off new wares,” Walt Mossberg writes for Re/code. “But, as I noted in an essay last year, the most important consumer tech companies — the ones you rely on most every day — have very little presence at the show. And the most impactful consumer tech products of the last 20 years or so weren’t unveiled there.”

“So, for this week’s column, I thought I’d look past Las Vegas, and past the ritual predictions of what will happen in tech this year,” Mossberg writes. “Instead, I’d like to talk about what should be done in 2016 by five of the biggest companies — to make your everyday digital life better.”

There are several interesting items on Walt’s list, so read the whole article, including this bit about Apple: “The dominant digital hardware company needs to use 2016 to get a better handle on its software. The core Mail, Calendar and other out-of-the-box apps on the iPhone, iPad and even the Mac haven’t had really major rethinks in years. Both iTunes on the Mac and the Music app on iOS also need simplifying and renovating, especially since Apple Music was grafted onto them. And the company’s cloud services — long a weak point — need shoring up. It’s great that Siri can summon up tunes on your new Apple TV, not so great when the tunes stop playing midway through.”

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote this past Sunday:

May 2016 be far, far better than 2015! One thing for Apple employees to keep in mind in ’16:

Execution matters. Pretty videos only go so far.

We expect a lot. So, deliver a lot. Not like 2015. Don’t deliver yet another thing that “holds great promise.” Certainly do not deliver important products with no stock at launch or for months afterwards (“Tim Cook, operations genius” – oh, really now?). Don’t deliver half-baked UIs, either. Pretend that Steve is staring/glaring over your shoulder.

Knock our socks off, Apple!

No pressure.

  1. google is going to get forcefully schooled on basic principles of income vs. expenditure theory in 2016. Likewise Microsoft will report that it no longer has any income since giving away windows 10 for free.

That leaves just apple and blackberry to duke it out over a $100 billion/yr tech market that has already shown hostility to android and windows phones and the people that still use such devices

  2. Yes lets start getting things right Apple and not nearly right. Not sure thinking about SJ looking over your shoulder is the right way, far better that they have a live person doing that job and if JI cant do it or is becoming part of the problem then find someone who can.

In the bigger picture having experienced the world of Microsoft again recently, where amongst a freelance Group of us it has taken months of simply getting a ‘simple’ requirement like setting up Outlook to actually to work on our computers. To solve it all requiring IT bods to take over our computers remotely to do so and in my case even then he had to look up the manual to see how to get it to work with Thunderbird because his initial settings didn’t work. To then weeks later, the first time I send a non test email to the prime partner who instigated this whole regime, it simply gets bounced back undelivered. As a result despite all that she still tends to send emails using her previous email setup. Yes lets say I can put things into perspective here especially when the trolls play their games on here.
