“Apple is hosting an event next Wednesday, Sept. 9, which, per usual, will be well covered and parsed by fans and investors,” Tiernan Ray reports for Barron’s.
“Just don’t expect too much excitement, says Oppenheimer’s Andrew Uerkwitz and Martin Yang,” Ray reports. “The pair reiterated their Outperform rating and $155 price target on the stock, and believe that that at the event, Apple will debut an upgraded iPhone and AppleTV [sic], as well as showcase new iOS features ‘with a focus on Force Touch and contextual awareness.'”
Ray reports, “They believe that the event will be ‘underwhelming’ and expect that ‘investors and customers may find the launch event disappointing and ultimately losing its appeal.’ A disappointing event wouldn’t necessarily be a negative indication of Apple’s consumer reception or competitive position, and in fact, they note, many of the ‘seemingly disappointing announcements,’ will actually have served to strengthen Apple’s ecosystem advantage further.”

MacDailyNews Take: Yes, the hoi polloi will be disappointed because they’re continuously expecting a resurrected Steve Jobs to walk across water to unveil a teleportation transporter. Yes, the AAPL shorts, the stock manipulators, Apple’s rivals, and the hit-whores will claim to be “disappointed” because that’s what makes them money. The rest of us will not be disappointed and may very likely, in fact, be pleasantly surprised and delighted.
They’re ALWAYS deemed underwhelming. It’s best to stay away from the blog-o-sphere a week or two after any Apple event–to let the stupid filter out. The self-righteous and self-entitled seem to come out in droves complaining and whining that they didn’t get what they wanted or expected.
You don’t have to expect it, with Tim Cook you can count on it.
With Tim Cook.. You’re an idiot.
What’s that got to do with anything?
The problem with Apple’s product announcements is that most (nearly all?), even Apple fanboys, can’t/don’t recognize the importance of the announcements.
Apple is spot on correct in ignoring what people say they want: PEOPLE DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY WANT UNTIL IT IS SHOWN TO THEM, and even then they have to see how others (early adopters) are using it.
This is why new product sales slopes are so shallow for the first 4 – 5 quarters.
You mean truly underwhelming as the doofus and predictable downplaying writing of Oppenheimer’s Andrew Uerkwitz and Martin Yang? If Apple isn’t lauded, then no one is.
Oppenheimer boss to serf “Get a PR piece out about Apple to keep our name in the media.”
“What? I don’t care what you say.”
“Well, then issue a release that says something wishy washy.”
Level 9 FUD alert.
It took seven years of research and development to bring iPhone to fruit. Other products followed fairly quickly afterwards due to the similarity of the line, hardware and software. Why do these people think innovation should be monthly, yearly or even expected. Wait and see.
Apple has provided clear evidence of a major release.
Apple did not lease a venue 10 times larger, and probably 4 times more costly, than the recent Apple Watch event to release an updated Apple TV.
You have to put things in perspective, “brilliantly underwhelming” is fantastic for a company coming out of a country that is “evilly overwhelming”.
I honestly wish these jackasses would explain what they’re expecting that wouldn’t disappoint them. Do these people even understand anything about any industry? What company in what industry makes leaps and bounds beyond everyone else? Sure, the SR-71 Blackbird was leaps and bounds beyond every other aircraft but that wasn’t bound by costs and most people wouldn’t want to fly one. Apple sells consumer products, not prototypes. The analysts complain about profit margins and so Apple isn’t about to be building super-expensive Black Ops product that no one else can build. Apple basically uses parts that are available to any smartphone manufacturer with enough money so I don’t know what Apple could do to build some product that knocks everyone’s socks off.
Think of it. Smartphones have progressed far faster than most automobiles but is anyone complaining about auto companies lacking innovation. Not everyone is driving Bugatti Veyrons or some vehicle that uses fusion propulsion. Company products basically evolve slowly and I don’t see what’s wrong with that as long as they improve in function and reliability. It should make sense to anyone who has any idea about how companies are run. These people look at any Apple product and yell “Boring!” because they’re not like some product from a Star Wars movie. It’s really so stupid when tens of millions of consumers are happily buying Apple products.
You just have to look at their track record. If reality even remotely tallied up to what was spoken by analysts about Apple then the company would likely be out of business. The only thing they are good at is manipulating the market by getting people to listen to what they say regardless of the validity of their predictions.
And guess what… that freaken plane leaked fuel… a gallon every few minutes until enough friction in the air caused it to expand enough to fill the holes.
You’re absolutely correct in saying that Apple sells Sh!t and goes directly in your hands. That’s what their entire ethos is about. And that’s what every other CE company can’t understand. (Sony was the last great CE company and they ultimately blew it.)
Apple is the last harbinger of the end user’s desire. That’s why they’re succeeding when all others are failing. For the life of me and the economy world-wide I can’t understand why all these other companies don’t get that!? It’s so freaken simple… make the customer the last and only person, your only customer. Don’t burn bridges by dismissing them once they buy your product and cash is in hand. It’s the NEXT sale that’s most important.
How is that so hard for companies to understand?
“Knowledge is limited, imagination encircles the world” – Albert Einstein.
To the squares that fit predictably in square holes, everything is underwhelming and lackluster.
Here’s to the crazy daring ones…!
It’s a bummer because they were once quite exciting. I haven’t been excited by an Apple event since the 5S/Yosemite debut two years ago. Continuity and the camera improvements were awesome. Before that? I can’t actually recall.
I am excited for an Apple WATCH that doesn’t suck visually.
I am excited for an Apple vehicle.
I am excited for a curved screen iMac.
I am excited for Apple TV causal games I can play with family.
I am excited for an Apple TV bundle.
I am excited for an iPad PRO that works as well as a pad of paper for notes and calendar.
I am excited for an Apple wearable besides the WATCH.
I am excited for revolutionary sensors in a WATCH, like sweat/exertion sensing, blood glucose, blood oxygen.
I am excited for a WATCH functionality that will let me put a standing alarm on my neighbor’s blood pressure so that when it drops below a threshold I get emergency calls and texts.
I am excited about a smart SIRI.
When any of these things come to pass I’ll be cheering. As of this minute I see/remember no reason to cheer for El Capitan, nor iOS 9, nor Mac Pro, nor iPhone 6S (from leaks), nor standard iPads.
I’ll be watching for new sensors on WATCH bands, iPad Pro, and cool new options with TV4. We shall see.
I’m worried they will announce a new Apple TV and say something like “it’s equipped with full 1080p HD output” like that’s a new or even just good thing. What a disappointment that would be. Next. If they don’t put 4K into the Apple TV it won’t even be worth mentioning at the keynote and they should just release the new version in the store silently.
I am very excited for the new iPhone, as is everyone I know with a 2 year contract on the S upgrade cycle.
Also, if Apple releases an iPad Pro that runs FULL Photoshop and Illustrator, that would be pretty mind blowing to be able to finally work from a Tablet.
I welcome Oppenheimer’s take. It’s good business to set expectations low and then over deliver. The opposite tends to be the case in most Apple announcements. If people don’t expect much, then they will better appreciate what is actually presented.
Stupid ‘THERE WILL BE BOREDOM’ analcyst excrement is shat at us every year. Nothing new here.
From all growing pile of rumors I’m reading, Apple is going to have an OVERWHELMING set of announcements of new gear, perhaps the biggest roster of new stuff ever. There will not be boredom. What’s boring is this oh-so-predictable analcyst excretion.
Will the teleporter have a touch screen?
