“Apple may launch the iPhone 7 this September, a year ahead of its expected arrival date, according to an industry analyst. As a result, the iPhone 6S model name would never see the light of day,” The Week reports.
“If the company followed its usual launch schedule, last year’s iPhone 6 would be followed by an iPhone 6S this year,” The Week reports. “But Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities, says the new phone will introduce significant new features – prompting Apple to break with convention and call it the iPhone 7.”
“According to Kuo, whom MacRumors says ‘has a respectable track record at reporting on Apple’s upcoming plans,’ Apple will introduce Force Touch – a technology it developed for the Apple Watch – on this year’s new iPhone, and then update it in 2016,” The Week reports.

MacDailyNews Take: We’ve never liked the “S” moniker and always felt that it shortchanged those iPhone models and the innovations they delivered.
Bullshit! 😱 it will be 6S/6S Plus
Apple should have abandoned the whole number fiasco ages ago. It only had any significance with the iPhone 3G because it was a 3G capable device unlike the original.
iPhone – 1st Gen
iPhone 3G – 2nd Gen
iPhone 3Gs – 3rd Gen
iPhone 4 – 4th Gen
iPhone 4s – 5th Gen
iPhone 5 – 6th Gen
iPhone 5s – 7th Gen
iPhone 6 – 8th Gen
So with the exceptions of the original, 3Gs and 4 the numbers have had no connection with the generation they represent.
They should just call it the iPhone.
I like the numbers. I immediately know which iPhone you’re talking about. Conversely with iPads. There’s the original iPad, iPad 2 uh 3 or Air or wait a minute let me go look that up. It gets a bit kookier when you consider the iPad Mini. I like the 1st Gen – 8th Gen numbering better still.
Psychologically there is added value to having a phone numbered closer behind to the current version than it really is. For example, the iPhone 4 conceivably would have far less resale value if the current version were to be numbered iPhone 8. That’s my 2 cents, anyways. 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
You’re numbering wrong.
The number represents the body iteration. The S represents the Second Edition of that body.
They skipped the iPhone 2.
If they release an iPhone 7 this year, things don’t break unless it’s the same body.
Of course Apple is free to do whatever it wants, but the pattern has been consistent since the iPhone 3G.
I hope they don’t just call it the iPhone. The version matters, and dropping the number makes it very confusing.
Support: What iPhone do you have?
Customer: The Apple iPhone.
Support: No I mean what version?
Customer: The gold one?
Support: No, I mean what generation?
Customer: ???
Support: What year is your iPhone?
Customer: I got it in 2014
Support thinks it’s the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, but it could be the 4, 4S, 5C, 6, 6, 6 Plus. Of course if it was used, it could be any model.
Using a simple number after each iteration makes it much easier to deal with, and for that matter, much easier to brag about.
It also makes referencing things back in time much easier. It would be much easier to search for spec and other information going back in time with a simple number added as opposed to “new iPhone” associated with the year.
These same problems exist in MacBooks and other products. You can’t determine what the product is without turning it on, figuring out where to go, and then end up with an abstracted model number.
Fun dialog, but they just ask you read them the 5 character model number on the back. 🙂
Fun dialog, but they just ask you read them the 5 character model number on the back. “
Which is awesome when they have it in a difficult to remove case, or when they can’t even see that there is writing on the back, let alone make out what it says.
And in the end, you’re just replacing a simple two character model number with 5.
Make that “early” 2014. 😉
If true, I think it would be more because calling the next flagship iPhone the “six-s-plus” is too awkward. Each new iPhone model has had “significant new features.” Going all the way back to the 2nd iPhone, Apple has kept the external appearance the same (or very similar) for two years at a time. That’s what really matters, not the name. And I think that practice continues, so nothing important is being “abandoned.” The back of the iPhone just says “iPhone.” 🙂
…just says “iPhone” and Model Axxxx
6S Plus How very Dell.
Thank god Samsung named their top phone S6 Edge instead of S6 Plus.
I always thought the S model thing was stupid anyway.
My wish list for the next iPhone is pretty basic, and also obvious (hopefully):
– Use the battery technology found in the new 2015 MacBook; also allowing the phone to be thinner.
– ForceTouch, along with significant software features to drive its usefulness.
– Bring back that deep and sinister space black from iPhone 5. This “grey” that’s basically silver doesn’t cut it.
– iPhone Edition? :p kidding.
I think the iPhone 6 is plenty thin enough. Already afraid I’m going to drop the thing it’s so thin. Keep the same thickness and deliver even more battery life….
How does thinness increase the chances of dropping it? I don’t drop my credit cards or dollar bills, and those are much thinner.
Credit cards are actually easy to drop, especially if you hold them as you would a phone. If you pinch the credit card between your thumb and index finger, then not so much, but that’s not how you hold a phone.
It’s amazing how easily people will one star a reasonable supposition around here. It’s not like I made some quacky post. Thinness or lack thereof is a common idea around here that merits discussion. I rank battery life as being more important than ever diminshing thinness. Is that so crazy?
Yes, it’s completely whacko. You prefer laziness and not wanting to charge your phone regularly, while I prefer the one thing my behavior alone cannot change, the thinness of the device.
Good grief, I hope Apple never hires you for their ad campaign:
“Buy an iPhone, we require you to charge our device more than the other guys. It’s a feature!”
“… but that’s not how you hold a phone.” Exactly! So why does thinness or thickness in the dimension in which you don’t hold it matter?
And why assume that Apple can’t increase battery life in a subsequent product without altering the exterior thickness?
You missed my point jt. If an iPhone was as thin as a credit card, it would be easy to drop. Dollar bills are dropped all the time as well, ask any cashier in the country.
I assume nothing about Apple. They are quite capable of evolving their products. But the iPhone 6 is REALLY THIN right now. If I’m pushed to state a preference, I would prefer a noticeable increase in battery life over making the iPhone more thin than it already is right now. What’s your preference?
Okay, I think. I’ve dropped my iPhone 5S way more frequently than credit cards or bills. I don’t have a preference, per se, for thinness over battery life — they just aren’t going to be that closely linked. That said, I don’t see any point to making the phone slimmer than it already is. My wife has a 6. I prefer the fit of the 5S in my hand but enjoy the screen size of the 6. Neither of us have battery-life issues, until we’re on LTE all day where there’s no WiFi to shift the networking load to.
If you can tell, I’m not too worked up about any of these design considerations: Apple’s gonna do what Apple’s gonna do and sometimes we’ll have choices and sometimes we won’t 🙂 I used epoxy and wire to build a charging cradle for my iPhone 4s in my car, and then the Lightening connector came along and I had to adapt to that. I figure the 6S/7 will be the perfect answer for everyone except those who hate it and I’ll be adapting my car around it again.
Thanks for a reasonable reply. Good to see there are some sane people on this board.
Don’t think the model S is what has led to all the speculation about Apple + Tesla? 🙂 No? Well, just wait for the iPhone 6K to be released!
Yes, “abandoned” isn’t inflammatory at all.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a few improvements in the overall design. The 6/6+ has a few design problems that Apple may be addressing. The protruding camera for one, second, the curved glass edges and subsequent lack of protection from drops and third, the exaggerated thinness causing the phone to be unnecessarily delicate. And who knows, maybe they’ll be made a little thicker for a more substantial battery like most users want.
You’re crazy if you think Apple would ever release a new iPhone model that is thicker than the previous generation.
They might. They did it with the third generation iPad and Jony Ive admitted that 60% of iPhone users want better battery life over thinner phones. There is a point of diminishing returns, what’s the point of a phone so thin that Battery life suffers and cases are required equipment, not just optional? Not everyone is thrilled with the idea of spending an extra hundred dollars or more on a battery case that adds extra bulk when a few millimeters and a few extra grams could have been built into the phone in the first place.
So, are you ready to apologize yet?
1st gen was 11.6mm
3G/3GS was 12.3mm
Yes that would look good just as Samsung has, if minutely, made theirs fractionally thinner than the iPhone. I can see the press now.
It could be spun into Apple reacting to its users’ requests for better battery life and if Force Touch is added then more power may be required. And don’t forget about Samsung’s camel hump of a camera. Thin is fine until it precludes the addition of new useful features, then it just becomes Jony Ive’s predilection for electronic anorexia.
I just want them to move the damn power button back to the top so I don’t keep turning off the screen when I’m trying to take a damn picture
Gonna be a massive holiday season for Apple this Christmas..
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at KGI Securities, whom MacRumors says ‘has a respectable track record at reporting on Apple’s upcoming plans,’ has foisted and blown more rumors than I can count. I see his name and *groan*. He’s more amusing to read from a sardonic point of view.
Meanwhile: Nothing-at-all locks Apple into any kind of naming of anything. Apple isn’t as lunatic as Microsoft in their naming. (Need I point out the missing Windows 9?) But when they want to provide a strikingly new feature, Apple will change a name accordingly. So why not iPhone 7 this year? (At least we know it won’t be iPhone 8. 😆 ) Or why not change the name to Phone? It’s just marketing.
I think you should start registering some domain names! Reading your words got me to rethink the entire product line naming strategy at Apple.
The watch merely becomes “Apple Wrist Edition”
The iPhone 4 (and below) “Apple Palm Edition”
The iPhone 5 & 5S, “Apple Hand Edition”
iPhone 6, “Apple Pocket Edition”
iPhone 6+, “Apple Pouch Edition”
iPads, “Apple Portfolio Edition”
MacBooks, et al, “Apple Lap Edition”
Mac mini, “Apple Anywhere Edition”
iMac, “Apple Desktop Edition”
Mac Pro, “Apple Floor Edition”
The car, “Apple Garage Edition”
The airplane, “Apple Sky Edition”
The interstellar transport, “Apple Escape Edition”
You’ve just blown some marketing executive’s mind. How fiendish!
Why would Apple need to release a new model so soon with the iPhone 6 in such high-demand? It doesn’t make much sense from a manufacturing standpoint. I would think a company would want to recoup as much as possible before retooling for a new model. If Apple is only going to give the iPhone 6 some minor spec upgrades it definitely shouldn’t be considered a new model. I’d think a new model every year would be more than enough. Apple isn’t really competing with anyone to need put out a new model more than once a year. Consumers are already stuck with a two-year carrier contract as it is.
I think selling a couple hundred million iPhone 6 models allowed to recoup their investment. And if the 6s and +s reuse the form factor, they get a few hundred million more of those for no design cost, too.
Put the ON/OFF button back on TOP !!! PLEASE
Hear Hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Analyst says…;” nuff said. BS!
I have the iPhone 6 Plus and find it perfect. To improve on it will be difficult. My two children also have the the iPhone 6 and they love it. Leave the design as it is.
a bunch of arrogant 12 year olds pontificating as if they know anything when, in actuality, they are simply scouring the web gathering stories others write about Apple and claiming them as their own. pathetic, childish and impotent.
Please, do not let the door hit you in the ass on your way out. Bye, bye!
With USB-C on the new macbook, it seems that the Lightning port is obsolete. I see it as a weakness that the iPhone and iPads can’t use memory sticks. If both move to USB-C it would certainly be an improvement.
I can see your point but the lightning connector has proven itself to be very sturdy under mechanical stress. On the other hand most of the smaller USB connectors that I’ve come across so far have been pretty wimpy. I’ve had numerous USB hubs and a few hard drive cases fail due to the poor engineering behind these ports. I don’t think I’d like to get rid of the lightning port before the USB-C proves itself to be mechanically sturdy.
you can buy iphone 6 from amazon
