Wired: Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge is pointless

“On Wednesday Morning, Samsung’s two new phones arrived at my desk. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge,” David Pierce writes for Wired. “They’re Samsung’s attempt to keep up with the iPhone, which has entered the big-phone market with no subtlety and lots of success.”

“The most surprising thing I’ve found so far is that the beautiful sloped-screen Galaxy S6 Edge is entirely pointless,” Pierce writes. “It doesn’t have two screens, or cool new ideas about smartphone interaction. It’s just curved.”

“The Edge is all about aesthetics, about Samsung showing it can make beautiful, unique devices with the best of ‘em. It’s a single screen, curved twice. That’s hard work, and I’m impressed Samsung pulled it off,” Pierce writes. “I’m just not going to buy it.”

MacDailyNews Take: And the Galaxy S6 (sans the pointless edge) unsurprisingly looks like a cross-eyed iPhone 6 knockoff. Nothing new as usual. Just more pointlessness from the struggling, outclassed, slavish copier Samsung.

      1. Damn. Now I know what the problem is!

  1. Actually, I give points to Samsung engineers and designers for the curved look.. I won’t be one to condemn a reasonable effort.

As far as Android and IP infringement, that’s another story.

  3. Even the naming looks like the iPhone (iphone 6 plus, galaxy 6 edge). Samsung has no shame at all. I fell very bad for those s tupid bastards that are going to buy it because the think it is the same as an iPhone 6 just because they have the same number en their name.
But sure I don’t fell bad for those who buy it jus because they are the typical brainless “anything but apple”.

    1. Seriously? Yes samsung might have copied the design. But for the naming, haven’t you noticed that there was already a phone named, samsung galaxy note EDGE? What do you expect? Lol.

      1. “You don’t mess with the zohan” lol
Didn’t you know that iPhone came out way before the Samsung Galaxy? Any Samsung Galaxy (because they now name Galaxy to everything, cameras, phones, tablets).
What’s next? A tablet called Samsung Galaxy light? 😉

    1. You were right. That was awesome.

I was going to write that Android devices are only owned by poor people, but I think that would have gotten people hunting me down….

There’s one guy over there presenting totally factual data about iPhone versus the lag master S6000, and they are all holding their hands over their ears.

      Hilarious.

  4. Now that Samsung is fading, I hope they can actually pull together and create something that competes with Apple (that is not a copy).

As the article points out, the edge idea was pretty good if Samsung developed it with original functionality that became standard on all their phones. But as a one-model feature it is pointless.

At this point, Apple is so clearly crushing everyone that I would be happy to see anyone else contributing good ideas. Love my 6+.

  5. Money quote – “It’s the first phone I can think of that is a fashion play through and through—no one will ever buy this device because it does something special. It doesn’t.”

I hope he reuses that quote about a “fashion play” when the Apple Watch is released.

  6. Funny story …..

So today I’m looking at a nice large size roof job, I’m a roofer by trade, estimator ….. So anyways I talking with the customer and was showing some pics on my iPhone 6 when customer pulled out their SamDungie Phablet and showed me couple of their leak pics …. And then came the comment about how my iPhone 6 screen was small and the pics looked better in their SamDungie – I’m trying to sell a job so I kinda agree and say, yes they are nice …..

With that the customer decided to show me video of their worse leak, I was impressed they actually did one and again said, that’s nice, wish all my customers would do that ….. But I never commented on their SamDungie …… But they don’t know what I have in my truck ….. A Six Plus and Air2 and iMovie and they also don’t know I’ve been practicing all winter doing quick 30-60 seconds movies with voice over and background music and text drops and transisitions and all that stuff ……

So we go thru the leaks and onto the roof ….. Place is huge some 330,000 sq. feet and the barrel roofs they have is right in my wheel house ….. So we walk the roof and I ask the Owner after I spent two hours with him if I can have some time to go back onto the roof and spend some time and take some pictures – Yes, take your time Ansel, he says …..

So I go up with the Six Plus and take some 45-50 pics and do a little video and down to my truck and airdrop files to my iPad and open in iMovie or

Remember I’m trying to sell a job and KNOW they love Sammie and were probably trying to say my iPhone 6 was inferior because of the screen size (Sammy’s Pics did look good) ….

So I opend the iPad and fired up the movie for the owner …… What happened I would of never figured …..

He called his right hand man to come see video and then called two other high up officials and said come see this ……

So now I had a small audience watching and showed the video again and then again – knew I had them impressed – Owner said you’ve got the repair job ($10,000 patch) and if that works out we will do the protective coating work ($150,000 job) and if your roof repairs are half as good as that video we have six more buildings to do ……

But the surprising thing ……. How much would you charge us to show our sales guys how to do what you did here today, I’m very impressed ……

I replied, nothing glad to do but you’ll need some new phones!
