Shopping with Apple Pay: Convenient, problem-free and even fun

“After I used Apple Pay for a day of shopping in stores, a few things became clear: The new payment system is convenient, problem-free and even fun,” Molly Wood writes for The New York Times.

“The same can’t be said for using Apple Pay to shop via apps on my phone or tablet. That system has lots of room for improvement,” Wood writes. “It’s limited, still buggy and seemed to result in multiple charges for some purchases — at least on Day 1.”

“When you’re ready to pay at a store with a contactless terminal, you hold your iPhone close to the device. The Apple Pay interface opens and shows the credit card you have set as the default. You can then change cards or just put your finger on the fingerprint reader to complete the purchase,” Wood writes. “With apps, Apple must rely on developers to include the payment system, and then to include it properly. So far, not many apps support the feature — fewer than 20 now, with some more coming in the spring. The apps now working with Apple Pay include Target, Panera Bread, the Disney Store and Uber, the car-sharing service.”

  1. I just went to McDonalds for lunch and I used my iPhone 6 Plus to pay for it using Apple Pay. I could not believe how easy it is.
Just touch the iPhone to the payment device and even if your iPhone is off, up pops the Passbook with the credit card you entered for Apple Pay. Just follow the direction to use TouchId with your finger and the check mark appears to indicate a successfully completed transaction. Now that is Apple style of electronic payment: Easy, Fast and no problems.

      1. I finally saw one today, but couldn’t pry the 10 yo kid away from it to actually pick it up… it really didn’t look too bad. I think it would easily fit in my jeans, and the extra screen real estate would be great to have. I might think about moving up at the next generation. No complaints about my 6 though. I was at the store switching my old 5s to my wife, and had forgotten in 2 weeks how absolutely tiny that thing is now.

i used pay this morning at mickey d’s to buy a big breakfast without hotcakes (hot cakes are full of chemicals). worked perfectly. to balance that out, this evening i bought buffet wings and clam chowder at whole foods to eat while watching the giants crush the royals. pay worked perfectly there as well.

can’t wait for the mcribs to come back!!!

  2. So far, I’ve used mine at – Walgreens, Subway, Panera, Rite Aid, Meijer and BP.

I checked to see if it would work at The UPS Store & Lowes – they do not have NFC capable terminals, so no joy there.

I grabbed coffee at a Tim Horton’s this morning – asked the cashier if they had NFC, she said she thought so, then she asked me what card I was using. I told her Visa, but when I put my iPhone to the reader it was my default AMEX card and I didn’t catch that before going through the thumbprint approval process. It said done, and I got the checkmark, but then the iPhone said to keep the iPhone near the NFC device, and the cashier said it wasn’t approved. I asked her if she had to specify payment type (I was wondering why she asked me which card I was going to use before I put the iPhone to the payment terminal) – she said no. Never got it to work, and ended up just swiping my debit card instead. I’m not sure it doesn’t work at Tim Horton’s though – I think I need to try a different Tim’s,

  3. Wow…used mine at Whole Foods…didn’t think they would have it ready or that it would be in this store…I had my iPhone out reviewing my shopping list..I saw the little sign and touched the thumb print…wow…it was so fast and slick I was stunned when the clerk told me to sign my name … Jeez…sign my name…how archaic 🙂

  4. Just used it for the first time at a Coke vending machine where I work. The credit card box stuck on the front of the machine had an NFC icon, so I said what the heck and tried it. Holy sh#t that was easy! Might as well leave my wallet at home.
