Ex-Obama press secretary Jay Carney in running to be Apple’s next PR chief

“A new report from Re/code today suggests that Apple is currently considering hiring… Jay Carney as its new head of PR,” Mike Beasley reports for 9to5Mac.

“Carney worked as White House Press Secretary from February 2011 until June of this year,” Beasley reports. “Carney would replace Katie Cotton, who stepped down from the position earlier this year.”

Beasley reports, “Carney is reportedly being considered for such roles at several companies, including Uber.”

  1. SJ and Katie Cotton made Apple’s PR organization the best in the world. They will not replace Katie Cotton with a incompetent jackass like this clown.

    1. I’m no fan of carney but you do realise that head of PR is a post for professional liars, right? you can call it massaging truth, spin or any other name but it’s all just lies.
I think you just want a different liar?

      1. What a twisted, insane, topsy-turvy statement that ignores reality and good business practices.

So in your world hire the best liar, that would be Jay, and pat yourself on the back for a job well done?

Thankfully, that’s not how it is done in the REAL world …

        1. don’t get me wrong Goe, I realise there’s more to it than being able to bent perceptions and massage truth (read:lie) but it’s a very large part of Public Relations.

with a company like Apple you do need to be able to intelligently react to unexpected situations and lead public perception of both the entity and its product.

there’s an awful lot to the PR post but over 50% of it is bending the perception of reality. if you aren’t genuinely gifted in the dark arts then you are nothing at Apple’s level.

        2. I’m sorry but you DO NOT LIE in public relations.

You must be thinking of politics.

When a PR chief of a company lies and distorts gets caught the company image may be irreparably damaged resulting in monetary losses, lawsuits and sometimes bankruptcy if they are too small to survive the impending onslaught.

When politicians are caught lying, their egos laugh it off, no lawsuits to worry about and proclaim it a great day … business as usual.

  2. Apple is already burdened with Al “the sky is falling” Gore. Please not another person supposedly skilled in Political Correctness! Apple should stick with proven talents. That is not on Tim Carney’s resume.

    1. “Political Correctness” is the new republican code word for “don’t get mad at me for saying something racist/sexist/homophobic/anti-semetic/nationalist/fascist” outburst.

      1. Yeah. I remember when Clarence Thomas, an accomplished black man, was nominated for the Supreme Court by George Bush, the entire Democrat Party went crazy, calling him every name in the book. Because, in the Democrat world, black people are only allowed to have one set of views, all of which are the Democrat platform views. In the view of a Democrat, any black person who strays from this set of views is like a slave who escapes the plantation. Democrats are the slave masters who send the dogs and the men with guns out to capture and whip the runaway. That is what the real racists do. They did it to Clarence Thomas, Ken Blackwell, Thomas Sowell, Condoleeza Rice, Tim Scott (the only black Senator currently, and a Republican), Allen West, Ben Carson, and on and on. Democrats like black people – as long as they don’t get uppity and think they are allowed to come up with their own ideas. That is up to the smart people – like Al Gore and Joe Biden.

  3. What are they thinking? It’s bad enough that we can’t trust most American companies not to infect everything with spyware but now they put a clown into Apple PR… 😀

  4. Apparently their HR department was trying to get Homer Simpson but he was unavailable so they went dumpster diving and found this clown… 😀

He can use his government connections to subvert Apple’s security and give away all the customer data to his favorite three letter agencies…

Apple should just flush the toilet and try again 😀

    1. *** copy and paste, just for you, TT ***

I’m no fan of carney but you do realise that head of PR is a post for professional liars, right? you can call it massaging truth, spin or any other name but it’s all just lies.

    1. Well, do you want the truth or not? I’d rather someone admit that he doesn’t know something rather than to make up an answer on the spot.

Jesus himself couldn’t please the current political mob here.

      1. And you have facts that show he is constantly clueless for a good reason?

So the alternative view, believe it is called the new normal, we hire spokesman for the most powerful man on the planet to KNOW NOTHING.

Mike, if a Republican was in office and this clueless clown was the mouthpiece the media and editorials would hound this guy to kingdom come for wasting their time.

        Democrat POTUS, crickets …

  5. Maybe if Apple to hire Jim Carey part-timely it would be both, entertaining and distanced ;)… And, please, lads. Politics on MDN? Really? You can be left here for 5 mins with politics topic to not start yapping about it? Listen. This man knows how to keep the poker face, he got connections, knows where are the strings to pull. He yet have to learn how to keep the mouth shut, so this job is a perfect skill development project for him. And trust me, one misbehave and he will share the fate of Browett. Tim will newer let him to play an asshole game on Apple brand. Ever! He would just sit where Katie sat and be focused on communication with the press and crisis management. Nothing above that.

  6. While Mr. Carney would likely do a very good job for Apple in his own work, I believe that he carries too much baggage from the abuse he received (from both sides) while part of the Administration. I don’t think that having him as the public face of Apple would do any good for the company. (Frankly, what I think Mr Carney needs is a position where he can be his own mouthpiece so that people can get an impression of him unbiased, for good or ill, by the people he’s working for.)

  7. Over at MacRumors they have reported that he is not under consideration, never was and in fact has not even met Cook. MDN why don’t you do like MacRumors and have a special forum for politics and religion? Then all the fruit loops can go over there and let the rest of us alone.
