Gartner: Tablet unit sales ‘will overtake PCs’ in 2015

“Tablet computers have been growing in popularity ever since the launch of Apple’s iPad in 2010, and now the number of tablets shipped worldwide is set to overtake the number of PCs for the first time,” Sophie Curtis reports for The Telegraph.

“Analysts predict that, in 2015, 321 million tablets and will ship worldwide, up from 256 million in 2014. By contrast, 317 million PCs (including desktops, notebooks and ‘ultramobile’ devices) will ship in 2015, down from 308 million in 2014,” Curtis reports. “Despite this shift, analyst firm Gartner believes that there will be ‘a relative revival’ of the PC market in 2014, driven by business upgrades from Windows XP and the general business replacement cycle.”

Curtis reports, “‘After declining 9.5 percent in 2013, the global PC market is on pace to contract only 2.9 percent in 2014,’ explained Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner.”

  1. Funny how not too long ago Gardner ignored tablets when looking at computer trends and market share. That org. seems to have a knack for being woefully late at the party.

  2. Article full of errors. “317 million, down from 308 million” ????????

Market share only item mentioned and shipped not sold.

But Steve did say this day would happen. And Microsoft said it would never happen. You know, like the iPhone selling very well!!!!!!!

    1. Did you like Gartner’s four operating systems chart? Android is one operating system (?!), Windows is another, there is the “Other” category, and OS X and iOS get lumped in as one.

    1. He’s not stunned he’s pining for the fjords.

‘E’s not pinin’! ‘E’s passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! ‘E’s expired and gone to meet ‘is maker! ‘E’s a stiff! Bereft of life, ‘e rests in peace! If you hadn’t nailed ‘im to the perch ‘e’d be pushing up the daisies! ‘Is metabolic processes are now ‘istory! ‘E’s off the twig! ‘E’s kicked the bucket, ‘e’s shuffled off ‘is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin’ choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!

      1. “you assured me that its lack of movement was due to it being tired and shagged out after a long squawk.”
        Sounds about right.

And thanks for elaborating on my long-ago memory. I really need to do a Python Marathon.

  3. Although it’s many years since I did maths in school, I don’t think “317 million in 2015” is DOWN from “309 million in 2014.”

Someone needs to go back to school, seemingly!
