July is Apple’s hottest month

“Apple shares finished June up 20% for the quarter and 2.8% for the month, which is a little out of character,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

“July, not June, tends to be the stock’s hottest month,” P.E.D. reports, “with back-to-school sales clearing last year’s inventory even as the drumbeat of rumors – all those promises of end-of-summer product releases — grows louder.”

      1. Considering that your ad blockers are blocking all of the ads which pay to keep the site up and running and allow writers like PED to be paid, I wouldn’t say it’s “their loss.”

      2. Maybe you shouldn’t expect everything to be free. It costs a lot of money to run a website, and those like you who feel so entitled are a major part of the problem.

    1. One of the problems I have is that they’ve done away with the Discus sign-in. The other problem is that when I try to sign in using an iOS device to post a comment, I get a “The token URL or xdReceiver has not been whitelisted.” I’ve tried Safari, iCab Mobile, Chrome and Maven. I get the same results. When I use my MBP, I can log in.

Idunno, I just think the site is less user friendly than before. Still excellent content, but not as easily accessible. JMO.

    1. Perhaps AAPL rises in July in anticipation of the back-to-school surge in combination with the annual parade of new announced/released Apple products in the August-September timeframe.

It is a bit surprising that this type of strong pattern shows up over a period of nine years. If it holds true this year, then a bit of options trading in July can yield years worth of return compared to buy and hold.

  1. This is a strategy I have used in the past. Sell in May or June, depending on product and WWDC rumors, then buy back in July. Last year I sold a few hundred shares in early June at around $450, and bought them back on July 1st at $400. Those same shares are now the equivalent of $650. This year I have simply held in the face of the new product rumors and after the very sweet 2FQ results.

  2. Gotta admit I wish Apple would spread out their product releases a little better. You’d think with Cook’s proven ability to manage pipelines and production so well they could control things and keep some general excitement going. Take some chances, make some accessories for the iPad and iPhone that people don’t expect. I’d love an Apple printer, for example. No reason in particular, but I’m in the market for a printer and why not. Eh, not required, but reason to frequent the stores.
