Apple adds A&E, History and Lifetime to Apple TV

A+E Networks has launched A&E, HISTORY and Lifetime content on Apple TV.

The free, ad-supported TV Everywhere content offers all Apple TV customers in the US access to full episodes, movies and exclusive clips of their favorite A+E Networks HD programming including Bates Motel, Storage Wars, Project Runway, Devious Maids and Pawn Stars. A+E Networks subscribers (through participating television providers) will have access to additional content including previous seasons of their favorite series from A&E, History and Lifetime.

“We’re excited to deliver our hit programming from A&E, HISTORY and Lifetime to Apple TV users,” said Dan Suratt, Executive Vice President, Digital Media & Business Development, A+E Networks, in a statement. “With the response we’ve seen from our content on iOS devices and on iTunes, bringing A+E HD content to Apple TV is a natural evolution to satisfy our consumers’ demands and to provide our advertisers a new opportunity to partner with A+E Networks.”

    1. In this one.

The joke is on us—we are the bizarro creatures. In the real universe, the other one, Pawn Starts is a show about Chess, and Project Runway about aeronautics.

      1. “It is just the channel’s name.”

No. It is more than that. The names used to mean something – “Arts & Entertainment”, was a really great channel. They showed top-notch material.

Now, it means nothing because “it is just a name”. What a pathetic cop-out.

Just one more reason why I do not regret getting rid of cable.

      2. I’ve tried, but it’s hard to deal with the transparent and self-serving personalities. Though I must say I didn’t spend much time with it. I don’t wish them ill, however shouldn’t they really be on the shopping channel. 🙂

    2. I use to watch History and A&E quite a bit back in the day. But since they’ve turned into “reality tv” channels I avoid them like the plague. It’s a damn shame.

    1. That is a good question. I was wondering the same thing. I’m willing to pay a Netflix type fee for content, but if they make me pay $100+ a month for cable TV just to get the privilege to subscribe then they won’t get a dime from me.

HBOGo loses money from me every month because they won’t let me subscribe directly.

      1. Actually you can watch full episodes of Storage Wars and some of their “non-hits” on each channel without cable. Full episodes are on for a several month period the day after they air. Hit shows such as Pawn Stars and American Pickers have a lock icon unless you register with you cable provider. I don’t think any of the other AppleTV “channels” do this. Interesting.

They need to unlock the whole thing for a dollar or two per month through iTunes.

      1. Once, Comcast resolutions varied dramatically from franchise to franchise, deepending on local bandwidth. In the Sacramento suburbs, Comcast HDTV resolution still is far inferior to DirecTV’s compressed, 1080p and uncompressed, 720p channels.

  1. Those looking for Modern Marvels, it’s under the “H2” section. I almost freaked when I thought it wasn’t included.

The selection is limited but eh, better than nothing.

  2. Eventually the networks will figure out that they don’t need the cable and satellite cartels to deliver their content. This will force them to be the dumb pipes that they are.

    1. Eventually the Cable-exclusive contracts will run out. Some more independent programming suppliers will renew with non-exclusive contracts that will allow streaming distribution. But how likely is it the comcast , will go non-exclusive when they are both programmer and cable distributor?

  3. In days gone by the History Channel and History International tried to air programs related to history- sometimes quite good and other times not so much.

    Those days are gone.

Like most other basic cable channels, they have decided that the name of the channel means nothing and producing tons of vacuous & vapid bullshit. The blame should start where it belongs- MTV, but the cancer has spread far and wide.

These channels are collections of unreal ‘reality’ (read no professional actors or writers to pay) shot on video and aimed at people who would likely stare at a test pattern rather than read a book. This is where Ice Road Truckers, Inked, Storage Wars, Duck Dynasty and all the rest come from.

Please tell me the apps for this shit can be hidden or deleted.

  4. Is anyone able to watch any of these new channels on their Apple TV? I cannot. I have Verizon FIOS and subscribe to TV to the extent that I can watch the History Channel on my TV, but while authorizing the Apple TV device as per their instructions, picking FIOS as my provider, logging in, and being told that authorization was successful, enjoy the show, the Apple TV never unlocks the content. I’ve been on the phone with Verizon for hours. They swear the problem is not theirs. Apple says the same thing. Whatever happened to “it just works”?

    1. Same here. My wife tied logging in and History was the only one that worked. We have Comcast and she said it wasn’t in the list. Seems Comcast tries to stop people from streaming. I can’t use the Comcast app mirror my iPad into my Apple TV.

  5. I’m also frustrated by the lack of Comcast as an option for activating A&E on AppleTV. I have Comcast service and pay for A&E, but I can’t watch older, missed episodes of some shows I want to see? What gives Comcast?
