Fitness smartwatch firm Basis Science in buyout talks with Apple, Google, others, sources say

“Basis Science, the company behind the Basis Health Tracker Watch, is on the market, according to two people familiar with the matter,” Alexia Tsotsis reports for TechCrunch.

“We’ve heard that the company has been shopping itself around over the past few weeks and has spoken to Google, Apple and possibly Samsung and Microsoft about a potential sale,” Tsotsis reports. “The price we’ve heard for any possible activity is ‘sub-hundred million,’ which could mean a small return for investors like Norwest Venture Partners, Mayfield Fund and Intel Capital, who have poured over $30 million into the company.”

    1. A sure sign that they have hit the buffers vis a vis a road map and design development. So any company buying them out would do so on the basis of the tech they have brought to market but not what they have in the pipeline.
If a company has no road map regarding ‘wearable tech’ as appears to be the name for it, then buy Basis Science and absorb their IP into your product what ever it is but know that if you have no road map, you are effectively buying a dead end!

  1. You have to be a tightrope walker with LOTS of spare tens of millions if you want to walk that line.

The competition has been building for years and it doesn’t seem like a killer sensor or technology has emerged which would make such a product a stand-alone entity.

A sale seems logical, given the hardball deep pocket playing field.
