Is Apple’s new iOS 7 better or just different?

“I was a ‘late’ adopter of iOS 7. That is, I updated just a few days ago,” E. Werner Reschke writes for T-GAAP. “By delaying my update I was able to watch other people’s reaction without any prejudice.”

“What’s interesting is there is a lot in iOS 7 that is just different. The new über thin font is a glaring example,” Reschke writes. “Font treatment is just a stylistic change. It doesn’t make anything more readable, it doesn’t take less space, it’s just different. The change is like going from bell-bottom 70’s jeans to straight leg 501’s in the 80’s. Both were pants, but one was cool during a certain era and another was not.”

“Beyond different, iOS 7 has added some additional functionality. Control Center is a great example,” Reschke writes. “Is iOS 7 different? Yeah. But better? Yes.”

  1. I really wanted to like iOS 7. Even after reading numerous complaints that the sneak previews looked like an Android knockoff. But after experiencing iOS 7 for myself, I can sincerely say that Jony Ive should be fired! iOS 7 looks like a bastardized version of Android for kindergarten kids! Many of the icons look like they were drawn by my four year old! In particular the button icons of the core apps such as Music, Notes, Reminders, etc. The bookmarks icon is a rectangle with a line through it. The share icon is a square with a line through it. Really? Most of the core applications look “anemic”, and feature boring and childish looking iconography on a washed out white background, and the static fonts are small and hard to read. Gray fonts on a white background? Not to mention that the white backgrounds are annoying to read in dim light. What the hell was Apple thinking???

AND THERE IS STILL NO MISSED PHONE CALL ALERT!!!!!!!!

  2. Being far-sighted, the font in iOS 7 is a HUGE improvement. Generally, I like it better. Some things need to be fixed: photos crop heads when moving from portrait to landscape: I can’t scale photos down to screen size for wallpaper: would like landscape full screen for photos and movies.

  3. I’m just glad a lot of people are on the same page as me. I am not alone in my loathing of the new fonts, colors, UI design, “button” behavior, and the look of most Apple built-in apps !
I really hope Apple is paying attention to all the reactions not just the BS overly positive media / reviewer reactions.

  4. Every time someone calls me and the buttons appear in the iOS7 screen, I have the feeling that I’m carrying a beta phone with a draft designed interface, to be further polished. iOS7 has better features than iOS6 but the interface is simply horrible and a drawback from iOS6. Cheers

  5. I too think ios7 is a warmed over steamy turd! It’s a step backward for apple and quite frankly my contract is up and I might just give android a try…it couldnt be much worse than ios7! I can’t even downgrade? Whats that all about you draconian fucks?
