5 big rumors about Apple’s special event in September

“Fall holds different meanings for different people, but for many technorati, this September will likely see the unveiling of another all-new iPhone,” JP Mangalindan writes for Fortune.

“Indeed, next month’s news may prove more newsworthy than years past if some of the speculation is right,” Mangalindan writes. “Will Apple (AAPL) finally introduce a new, cheaper iPhone? Could the high-end model sport fingerprint-sensing technology? What else is in store?”

Mangalindan writes, “Until Apple’s reported September 10 event, we’ll have to content ourselves with the rumors. Here’s a roundup of what the blogosphere is currently salivating over.”

• An all-new, cheap iPhone
• Fingerprint sensor
• Different colors
• A larger screen
• New iPod touch

MacDailyNews Take: And the event itself, which has yet to be made official by Apple.

  1. I’m seriously disappointed at the latest rumor that the 5C will cost $500 off contract and the 4s will be $300-400. They really should kill the 4s and make the 5c $350. They would destroy Android in one stroke. So sad…

    1. Apple doesn’t seem interested in destroying rivals like Samsung does. That’s one reason why Wall Street hates Apple. One would think Apple would be nearly untouchable by its rivals by now. I never expect to see a “death blow” to rival companies coming from Apple. Naturally, as a shareholder, I would like to see Apple pulling ahead of the rest of the smartphone industry but in everyone’s perception that’s not happening. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

However, you can only put but so many hardware bells and whistles on a smartphone so it might not be practical for Apple to do. The Galaxy S4 had the kitchen sink on it and it still fell short of sales, so there has to be some practical limit on what consumers actually need or want in a smartphone. The tech-heads just see things differently thinking they can never have high enough specs and anything less is a failure.

      1. Good point. Apple is worried about Apple. If they do well they will succeed. So far they have done a pretty good job! Samsung will have a difficult time keeping up once they have to do it legitimately. I expect that to be the case going forward especially this fall. The real ass kickers will be whatever they’re doing for the living room (tv,set top box or whatever), monetizing the fingerprint sensor and all those iTunes accounts as well as retail purchases in the future annd the larger iPhone which will probably be coming by spring (at which time they can drop the 4S and have a complete family of iPhones for everyone). The iPhone and iPad releases this fall is just the beginning. Even better stuff to come.

      2. Laughing_Boy48 says: That’s one reason why Wall Street hates Apple

Need I point out that, judging from Wall Street’s own behavior over the last 6 years, Wall Street hates itself. It is bound and determined to stick to the Bad Biznizz Plan and screw its own future. It’s entirely devoted to scouring out every last vestige of financial value in the world in preparation for what’s going to amount to a neo-feudalist dark age.

Apple joyfully ignores them, entirely to their benefit.

  2. To do a 350 dollar IphoneC they would have to really lower the internal components. I think IphoneC is really about China more than “cheap”. This will allow them to provide China with the Iphone they will accept (cost wise) while allowing them to manufacture in high volume. The 4S is still very popular with a lot of people because of the glass and small size. I would bump up the ram on the 4S though to 1G

  3. And… hopefully this event will be the last hurrah for the hapless Tim Cook. As soon as it’s over and everyone departs wondering what all the fervor was about, maybe they will realize that Tim hasn’t a clue about what to do to get the once great company back to where people leaving the events are truly excited.

    1. This guy must be a Microsoft tool who plants negative information about Apple’s Tim Cook simply to draw attention away from Ballmer’s colossal failures.

As long as it takes, Microsofties. As long as it takes.

  4. This Fall will also have:

    1. The new Mac Pro.
    2. Upgraded laptops.
    3. New iPads.
    4. New ATV.
    5. Mavericks.
    6. iOS 7.
    7. Upgraded iMac.
    8. More additions to the ATV lineup.

    Sorry Gene, no TV set.

  5. iPhone 5C to address the (C)hinese market, afterwards an announcement that they have struck a deal with China Mobile.

iPhone 5S announced. iPhone 5, and 4S still available elsewhere on contract for $200, $100, $0, respectively.

iPhone 4, now off contract for around $279. (This phone is still supported by iOS 7, why take it off the market?)

  6. Why would anyone salivate over:
    • An all-new, cheap iPhone – if for India/China fine – otherwise all it does is decrease profit margins
    • Fingerprint sensor – meh, not worth trading up for
    • Different colors – who cares – get a 3rd party case
    • A larger screen – won’t happen unless they can make it work with existing apps and without sacrificing battery life
    • New iPod touch – not a hot market, but may keep the product from going into irrelavancy

  7. I don’t really expect anything. Nothing will be new actually just like the past. If iPhone 5C (cheap version) won’t be cheaper as we think, apple will fail. I bet it. As always it will be some dumb down version from iPhone 5S. I hate it.
